After watching all four of your surname episodes, I noticed not one of my 4 surnames came up. I know I am probably being unrealistic but, I thought maybe one would show up....lol. The four names from my heritage are Irish- Ryan, Carter, Scots- Bradley, Ross. My Brother did a short ancestry search and found our name Ryan, first came from County Limerick, Ireland. The first ancestor in the U.S. was Matthew Ryan in 1690s. In the early 80s we attended a "Ross Reunion", at Cumberland Falls, KY, through a Ross Historian in our Family, ( that I had never met before), I found out we were descendants of Chief John Ross. Also, Medal of Honor awardee Wilburn Ross was my Mother's cousin. As far as I know we're all from the McCreary and Pulaski county, KY and Scott county TN. My Family was very closed mouth about EVERYTHING! So, to my point, ( finally..lol), I was wondering where my Family origins started. My Cousin started a Bradley genealogy but couldn't get very far for some unknown reason. I know very little at all about my Grandmother that was a Carter and I knew her. Help would sure be appreciated.

My families name used to be McDougall and when my ancestor came over to America switch it to McCullough. They came through PA down to N Carolina into Mississippi. Do you have any information as to why they would change the name like that. Some people I found through Ancestry still go by McDougall. My relatives name was William Daniel McCullough. I figured there was a family argument and they wanted to disassociate themselves with each other. I happened with Williams family after the 1900 again with the McCullough name. A lot of them got made at each other and now go by McCuller or McCullar in N Mississippi but my line went back to McCullough because my great grandmother said it sounded more sophisticated.

I have hit a brick wall on my surname. My family is from Bath/Menifee Co,Ky. Can you search the name Igo later called Argo. Thanks so much.
@BarryVann Жыл бұрын
Beverly, I am sorry to have taken so long to reply to you. I knew a family named Argo once when I was an undergraduate student in East Tennessee. I had a class with a lady named Argo. Her husband had died a year or so earlier. His name was General Argo. They lived in East Tennessee. Argo doesn't appear in Harrison's book, but it does appear in Black's Surnames of Scotland. He claims that it is a Aberdeenshire surname. That part of Scotland did not feed the Ulster-Scots community, so it most likely came straight to America from Scotland.

my surname is Ross. The family to my knowledge came from Ulster. I am 33% Scots , Irish And Welsh. Any information?
@BarryVann3 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I have some information, which you might already know. There is an area called Ross-shire in the Scottish Highlands. There is a German Ross, but since your family came from Ulster, I would think that you are related to the Clan Ross. The famous Cherokee Chief John Ross was actually only one eighth Cherokee. He was 7/8ths Scottish. Happy New Year! Barry
@janetprice853 жыл бұрын
Sounds right. My Dad told me his father said the Prices were Scots-Irish and all the men in our family have the surname Ross as a middle name. It was the surname of a favorite uncle. Price is usually considered Welsh but northern Ireland has a fair number too.

"Ham" is interesting because so many English villages end with the suffix "ham", which could then refer to a village by or on a pasture of river.

Hi Dorinda, your grandfather may well have been right about the Scots-Irish connection. Without going into the Gaelic forms, your surname was found in Dumfriesshires, Scotland and in Ireland itself. There was a lot of movement between the southwest of Scotland and Northern Ireland. I talk about the formation of that community in my book, In Search of Ulster-Scotland. Thanks for watching and for writing. Barry
