This was their debut album and not a bad song on it. This came out close to when The Police came out and is what their real sound is. This was the big change in rock in the late 70's and was the beginnings of what some call new wave. I wasn't really sure about them until I bought the album and listened to it completely and was hooked.

@@markcox731 Ok. I found a documentary on Elliot Easton on KZbin in which someone, not Elliot Easton(maybe a manager?) made a joke about how Elliot Easton used to play right handed but he convinced him to switch. He literally said he was joking. I also read an article where EE talked about the difficulty in finding left handed guitars when he was young. In addition, there is a photo of EE playing a ukelele at about age five, already left handed. Do you play guitar? If you did you would understand the incredible difficulty in switching from right handed to left handed (or vice versa) simply because someone thought it looked better. It wouldn’t be a realistic pursuit for almost any guitarist. It would be like learning all over again, and would always be difficult and awkward.

The first two Cars albums (The Cars & Candy-O) put them on my list of all time favorite bands. Those albums were quite different than most anything of that era. I call the style avant garde. Their next three albums were also good but leaned more toward a commercial sound. If you want to hear the full on quirkiness of The Cars then check out the song I'm In Touch With Your World from their first album. The keyboardist, Greg Hawkes, uses various gadgets and whistles and synths throughout the song. There is a video of it Live @ Musikladen which shows just what Greg is doing. Also from their first album the songs Moving In Stereo and All Mixed Up run together and would make a great double header reaction. Moving In Stereo brings the avant garde and All Mixed Up provides the rock and roll. Take care and have a great day!

This is an incredible album - one of the best debut albums of all time; right up there with Boston's debut, Van Halen's first album, and Led Zeppelin's initial release. This is one of my favorites from them, but it was amazing to be there when they first kind of arrived on the scene. I saw them opening for other larger name bands in rock music, usually that were pretty hard rock in comparison to this. It was a strange comparison but I loved the mix of the crowds. Everything about the feeling of disassociated punk, but still has a rock edge, it's still borderline pop in a way, and there's a little bit of country phone in there every once in a via the guitar. We actually covered this for a number of years in my Honky Tonk band, with our pedal steel player playing that iconic keyboard lick. We had so much fun with it, and the backing vocals, and people would dance their asses off to it.

You should do every song on the 1st album, plays like a greatest hits. Their sound did change in the 80s, probably due to the advice of the music industry. I cannot say it was to be more commercial because this 1st album is what made the Cars huge. It wasn't like this struggled and they needed to change to become popular. Pretty much every song on this album was played on the radio before the later stuff came out.
@jackgilchrist2 ай бұрын
Right, but their later stuff was played on MTV, which was practically the be all, end all of popular music in the '80s and gave them new life. Just like it did for ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Heart, etc. Can't say I'm a fan of the '80s version of any of these bands (except maybe ZZ... their '80s stuff doesn't compare to their '70s stuff, but they managed to do the '80s thing and still be pretty cool) but MTV certainly made them known and popular in a way they hadn't been before.

Hey, your fan in Boston always here to show love to all the great rock bands from Boston. You guys are in for a treat. The Cars were a ground-breaking band that influenced a lot of bands that were part of the 1980s "New Wave" scene. Whenever you are back from your hiatus, you should do a deep dive into the Cars' first two albums. This song was from their 1978 debut just called "The Cars." At least half of the songs on this album were radio hits and worth a reaction. I recommend "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll," "Bye Bye Love," "You're All I've Got Tonight," "Moving in Stereo"... the last two songs are on the album back to back with "You're All I've Got Tonight" kind of segue-ing into "Moving in Stereo" and are often played together. Their second album, "Candy-O" (1979) was even darker and edgier than their debut and had several songs worth a reaction: "Let's Go" (party anthem for my senior year in high school, when this song was popular), the title track "Candy-O", "Dangerous Type," "Double Life," "It's All I Can Do." Those would be a good start. Really all the tracks on both of these albums are worthwhile and I think you both will appreciate them.

I'm a total Metalhead, but The Cars struck a cord with me. Their songs are very melodic and smartly produced. Their first two albums were more on the Rock side, but they started sliding into a more "New wave", "pop rock" sound for their 3rd album and subsequent albums. Their debut album is a rock masterpiece. You ABSOLUTELY have to listen to: "Good Times Roll", My Best Friends Girlfriend", "Moving In Stereo", "Let's Go", "Candy-O (with the preemptive "Shoo Be Doo"), "Touch and Go", "Since you're Gone", and "Think It Over". I know it's a lot of suggestions, but they really are that good.

The Cars' debut album is one of the best debut LPs ever and one of the best albums period ever. Every song is amazing. It is an eclectic mix of pop, synth, rock and a bit of roots rock guitar. Ben Orr is the lead singer here. Ric Ocasek was the other lead singer and wrote their quirky, memorable lyrics. Both are no longer with us unfortunately. Elliot Easton is an underrated guitarist. Love Greg Hawkes on the synths/keyboards. Can't forget drummer David Robinson. You need to react to their first single, Let The Good Times Roll, plus Bye Bye Love, My Best Friend's Girl, All Mixed Up, Moving In Stereo, Dangerous Type.... you know what, just react to the entire first two Cars' albums.
