On the ranch, it’s incredibly important that all of our trail horses are well trained and safe for our guests to ride. One of the ways we get our horses ready for trail rides is by going through a desensitizing process! In this video, Ashley will walk us through our desensitizing process with one of our new horses, Bella! Bella came to us awhile ago with some training, but we need to do some work with her before she can be one of our trail horses, mostly because she is quite skittish which can be very dangerous on the trail.
Ashley and Michelle will teach us all about why desensitizing is so important, what tools you can use to desensitize a horse, and how to tell when a horse is responding well to the process. And Ashley will also explain why Michelle is running around the arena chasing Bella with a blow up tube. You have to watch the video to understand the madness!

I know this is an older video, but do you guys use any verbal reassurance when doing the desensitization tasks? Like using a calming voice to tell them that they're ok and they're doing a good job?

I've a colt that will spook easily, do I keep apply the item until he stops?

Howdy! Yes, apply pressure until they show a sign of relaxation, then retreat and rub them for affirmation. Repeat this over and over until they no longer spook at the object. Approach and retreat…until they relax.
