Bartok was not happy of his first sonata for violin and piano, which he foresaw to publish without the first movement. Finally, he published the whole sonata, and decided to compose a second sonata - this one - more in adequation with his genius. This sonata is a masterwork of the genre between the two WW's. The interpretation of Bruce Berg with Tibor Szász is masterful.

Thank you for your highly interesting comment on the first Bartók sonata for violin and piano, and for your kind comment on our performanced of the second sonata with Bruce Berg. I used to think, too, that the first sonata was less worthy of the genius of Béla Bartók than the second one, but after familiarizing myself with the first one, I came to love it, too. Here is our performance of the first Sonata with violinist Ildikó Mogg-Bán.

Thank you very much. I had the same reaction than you had about the first violin-piano sonata. Cheers, Gérard Begni.

One of the few masterpieces of Bartok I don't know yet (was put off several years ago by a recording w/ Isaac Stern--generally one of my favorite violinists--that seemed sloppy to me.) This performance seems to do it justice; no doubt others do too. I must get to know this. Thanks for uploading one of the few areas of his oeuvre that I haven't yet explored.

+Tibor Szasz would you say that this is harder than the first violin sonata. Or the other way around. I'm currently working on the first one now

+slateflash As to which Bartók Sonata for violin and piano is more difficult, the first or the second: I found the second easier simply because I had the advantage of being able to consult the Bartók - Szigeti performance at the Library of Congress. But I worked hard to attempt to come up with a similar concept for the first Bartók Sonata for violin and piano which you may hear under kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqbagnWvgbSAd6c You be the judge. (I love both sonatas equally well and consider them equally difficult (or easy) Sincerely, Tibor Szász

+Tibor Szasz wow thanks for the prompt reply. Actually i just started to become more interested in this 2nd sonata recently and thought since it only has two movements it should be (slightly) less challenging. While having one less movement does make it kinda easier, i find that there are alot more uncomfortable/awkward passages and exposed bits in the 2nd sonata as compared to the 1st so in that sense i would say that the 2nd is actually slightly harder but more musically rewarding. Most of the fast passages in the 1st i feel are somewhat more comfortable to work with. Thanks for your reply once again. I was curious to hear another violinist's opinion on this.
