I'm from New York. When I visited San Francisco, I mostly travelled on Muni, as BART is suburban commuter-focused. But I did use BART from and to the airport. What I remember most is that it was loud and screechy. Makes the NYC Subway sound peaceful in comparison.

It is screechy but Bart is much wider and more spacious on the inside than nyc mta.

the original fleet that they now call the "legacy fleet" is the loudest train i've ever ridden haha... their new fleet of the future is much quieter and smoother and is still fairly loud compared to other systems i've ridden such as London underground

I am a big fan of subways and transit systems. Overall, BART is a great system now connecting four counties. The problem I have with transit systems in the United States and BART, in particular, is how long it takes to build the system and/or extend the system. There were so many delays I think it took four years for BART to extend the line just two stations into San Jose. Shanghai, China has a subway system larger than New York City and it was accomplished in just thirty years. BART is probably only a third as large and it will be fifty years old next year. It is not only sad it is pathetic that BART and transit in general in the United States is far behind in planning and construction.

Well, our regulatory system allows any NIMBY to block even projects of national importance. Ironically, this is mostly done via environmental laws lawsuits, like CEQA. It's sad that zero-emission environmentally-friendly alternatives to driving are being blocked using laws which were originally meant to protect the environment.

I remember when Vancouver Canada was making one of these rapid transit systems and they needed a name. Vancouver lies in the Fraser Valley area of British Columbia. So someone came up on the name FART, Fraser Area Rapid Transit. Needless to say they didn’t pick that name. 😂😂

Can you do a video covering the history of rapid transit in Seattle? It's very interesting. Also, we just recently passed the measure Sound Transit 3, which will turn our small, one-line system into a 116-mile-long system of multiple lines.

Light rail doesn't have to be built at grade just most choose to do so. That isn't that modality's deficient.

The Genesis of Bart came out of the demise of the key system in the early fifties When they did get rid of the urban transportation at that point the outlook was we're gonna have to put a train under the Bay that was decided in the mid fifties and they had an artist rendering of what that would look like It wasn't until prior to the Vietnam war that the decision was made to do an environmental impact study and figure out how to fund such a project the Bay area rapid transit district was created to get the funding and once funding was achieved the contracts were approved and the idea was to completely electrify a train system for the entire Bay area unfortunately that didn't happen The bulk of the system was completed and brought online in 1972 and it wasn't until a few years after that the trans bay tube was constructed and opened a couple of years after that and it wasn't until recently did a complete circumference of the Bay area plann with all of the transit bureau's and districts for the entire Bay area finally come to fruition Phase one of silicon Valley has finally been completed phase 2 is about to begin construction and once that is opened in 2028 with the adaptation of the electrification of caltrain you will have a complete service of electrical train that services the entire Bay area

Great video! Any chance you could do a video about High Speed Rail? I feel pretty confused these days what's happening ever since Gov. Newsom's announcements. Is it still happening?

Good video. ATO (automatic train operation) was developed successfully in London and on the Lindenwald line in NJ at about the same time. AFAIK the Tokyo metro can manage 90 second headways with human drivers but they have a unique perfectionism. You could have mentioned they built BART to a different rail gauge (5’3”/1600mm) to the rest of the US railroads (4’8&1/2”/1435mm). The only justification I’ve seen for this is the concern that crosswinds would blow the light weight aluminium bodies over. Inventing the “perfect” system is absurd when good enough using existing technology will do. Nice comparison with CAHSR. IMHO they should have built maglev.

They actually used 5'6" Indian Gauge, and the wider gauge would allow them to have better stability at higher speeds, as the system was designed to be a commuter rail/heavy rail hybrid.
@tjejojyj
@tjejojyj 3 жыл бұрын
@@AVeryRandomPerson Thanks. Was it necessary? Other railways seem to have high speed on 1435mm gauge without problems. The increase in stability would seem to be marginal. They could have gone full-GWR to 7'1/4"? AFAIK no one else has copied them. I read once that BART chose it because the design uses lighter (aluminum) framed cars and they were worried about strong cross winds.

Good video but I disagree on some points...BART has built into and expanded the comprehensive system though...they are extending it or SJ now with plans for more expansion into the Santa Clara. Also it didn't cover the Peninsula cause the people in it voted against it... BART the organization couldn't make them want it or pay for it you know...nimby-ism was big back then too

BART is not really a "subway"/metro. It's regional rail that covers three major cities. In simple terms, BART is an S-bahn.

It gets to the point when bart shouldn't go to the far fling suburbs. Like Stockton should be more like a commuter rail that's electric like calmod. Subways are for closer to the city. Yeah, bart is more of a commuter subway than pure metro or commuter rail, but still.
