Right on, you've got this! One thing I'll say, especially when you're brand new...you'll almost never been completely ready, just get out there and start pounding the pavement. The sooner you do, the sooner you'll be working, guaranteed :)

Thanks for the compliment :) I try to lay it out as clearly as possible and yes, if you actually do this stuff, it does work! For girls it's the same concept. When going out randomly to drop resumes, look nice but not over the top. Accentuate you're girly assets but be conservative about it, not slutty. Same deal, think female lawyer after work. Then when you target specific places, start to mimic their attire more closely (fit, colors, etc.) which will help the managers see you fitting in.
@BartendingPro11 жыл бұрын
No worries... With references it really doesn't need to be much. They (person giving you the recommendation) should have their name, date, & occupation as the heading up top, then a typed letter that they sign if possible. Hell most of mine aren't even signed! The truth is hiring managers will barely glance at letters of recommendation...it's just a tool that they see as you going the extra mile, and aka, shows you will be a good employee who will be willing to do the same in your job.

Ive owned my own business for 8 years online. After Google updates left me in some financial trouble, I'm now in need of bartending work. I studied all your videos, dumpster dived and used food coloring to mimic drink colors and learned all the drinks (memorized yours and other's recipes). Since I owned my own business in a solitary existence I have no recommendations. The last place I worked at was Mcdonalds, 10 years ago. How do I get someone to give me a chance? I live in Toronto.

Relationships. You need to cultivate a relationship with a manager who will give you a shot. You said they would lie for you about your experience...how about they GIVE you some experience? But don't flat out lie to get a job, there's a reason most placed that are really busy require several years, if you go into a club environment and you're not used to it or ready it could end up being pretty ugly and only burn a bridge. Start at a smaller, slower bar. Work up!

What should my resume look like if I have zero experience? I have just completed a Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission certification viewed every video of yours and bartending basics. Thanks!
@BartendingPro12 жыл бұрын
Good question. 1st off, if its going to be a good recommendation they WILL take the time, that's the whole point of why a letter is powerful, you're good enough that someone took their own personal time to write it for you. That being said, you can write a rough draft & give it to them as an outline. Just make sure they ONLY use it as an outline & don't just fill in their name & sign it. 1) It's not honest, 2) All your letters will sound exactly the same. & the managers who read them will know.

See the comment I left for @TheSlyOne420 about what to wear if you're female. As for the getting hit on part, guys or girls, that's just part of the job...awesome most times, but yes can be annoying others. Just remember you're in customer service and stay cool. If they cross the line, don't ever be afraid to say "STOP", and/or tell a manager/bouncer/big guy coworker to give 'em the boot.

So being a first timer EVER at bartending (have been a waitress, in fast-food, and everything else, not food industry related) If we don't have any bar experience, where should we start.? Is it a bad idea to walk right into the big bar down the street and ask for a job application, I mean how does this go.? And if not what type of joint would be a good place to start.?

Hi. Would u say its better to get a letter of recommendation from a previous bar manager over a manager from a non hospitality job? Or will the second work just as well?
@CandyHam12 жыл бұрын
thanks this is all very helpful.... I was thinking I might go for a bartending job part-time or something while I finish up school. But San Francisco is a demanding city and I don't know if I stand a chance. What sort of things did you put on your resume? How do you organize it?
@redhoodie41118 жыл бұрын
I feel like such a loser saying this but, I want to be a bartender but I have absolutely no experience..... The closest thing I'll be doing is some parties that my mom and my aunt are going to be throwing in the next couple weeks, and they've agreed to let me bar tend for practice. My resume has nothing bar or restaurant related on it; I've done nothing but labor jobs since I got out of high school. But anyway, seeing as how my current situation is pretty pathetic in terms of experience what would you recommend I do to make myself seem more valuable to a bar?
@BartendingPro8 жыл бұрын
Unless you want to "stretch" the truth about your experience on your resume, counting those parties as such... which I've seen, and recommended to be done... then your best option is to try and get hired in a lower position that is easier to be hired into with limited or no experience (i.e., server/waiter, bus boy, bar back, dishwasher, bouncer, DJ, anything!) Then from there it's up to you to be the squeaky wheel and let them know your intentions to move up in the organization. Most important thing is just to start!
@redhoodie41118 жыл бұрын
Okay, Thanks so much.
@justinjorge20758 жыл бұрын
Starting as a bar back and busboy in a week! Excited to put some elbow grease in and learn. ;)
@angelrussell61598 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt recommend going into djaying as a starter for bartending. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Unless you already DJ, stick with something related to the food and hospitality industry.
@BartendingPro8 жыл бұрын
I agree...My point was if you can get into an establishment ANY way possible, you can move to another position from there. If you're working at a place as a DJ (or ANY job for that matter) they are obviously willing to hire you, and thus possibly give you a shot somewhere else granted you can demonstrate your willingness to learn and be a valuable employee. Be clear, I'm not saying to try to become a DJ to try and get into bartending, in fact that and being a bouncer are probably the furthest from working as a bartender...but if you ALREADY dj and work at establishments you think would be good bartending gigs, then you will have a relationship with the management that you can leverage to get hired into other positions.

No problem, you're very welcome! Yes, SF is a very competitive market for bartenders, but it's also very large...aka, LOTS of places to work. Think neighborhood and suburb bars, not downtown clubs when you're first starting out, these will give you the most opportunity to start with little to no experience...For your resume, go to bartendingblueprint(dot)com and enter your name and email and I'll send you 6 custom resume templates for free and a video telling you exactly how to fill 'em out :)

I'm just wondering about another reality I seem to face...it seems that everywhere I apply, the entire staff are all women; I mean from dive to swanky, that's all I see. I'm not trying to be misogynistic or bitter in any way, but is it possible that it's becoming harder for men to get jobs as bartenders?

When you suggest going in every week to a place you want to work at, having already been in once and introduced yourself and gave your resume to the correct person, don't you run the risk of being perceived as TOO eager, anxious, whatever? Or thought of as a pain in the ass? Not trying to be funny here. I'm legitimately curious. And also, how old is too old to apply for bartending work? And no politically correct answers or saying how you look has nothing to do with it. Love your tapes, BTW.
@BartendingPro12 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, the million dollar bartending question. The short answer is, friends...when you're first starting out you need to make friends with the managers that can give you a shot. You can march in and apply but if they don't know YOU, your name, your personality, it's a snowballs chance that you'll get the gig...especially with no experience. Check my blog at bartendingblueprint(dot)com if you want more specific details about this process.

Hey, I know it has been awhile since you posted but just go for it!! I'm well over 40 but I'm going to try. Bar back and go from there. Just make sure you look really, really, really good and put twice the effort into your appearance without looking like you did, if that makes sense. Go for the smaller, non-trendy establishments or restaurant bars (I've been binge watching his vids)
