This is how I deadlift been doing it for years. I am 6'3 and this lift actually saves a lot pf wear and tear on my back. On some jobs when heavy lifting is required they teach you wide stance back straight. Sumo style helps you maintain your center of gravity better and you use more of your legs rather than your back but sumo is not for everyone.
@thegnome95292 жыл бұрын
I agree. Im 17 and have been working out for 3 weeks now. I tried sumo first time today and when i failed a normal 130 kg deadlift i went straight for sumo and got it up quite easy. Idk if its because i have very long legs and arms with a short torso but it just felt reqlly nice

I always do a sumo deadlift with a straight back as it is much easier on my back. 90% of the videos on you tube emphasize bending forward to execute the movement. This video validates what I'm doing is still effective. Thank You for posting...👍🙏

Thanks so much. Conventional deadlift I couldn’t do correctly no matter how much I watched videos and trained it. I still haven’t got sumo down perfect but I’m repping more weight and it’s so much better on my back. Only difference is my sticking point went from getting off the floor to locking it out at the top
@jizzycoast35817 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video. My form was shit and I was stuck around 450 max on deadlift 485 conventionalI could 15 rep 405 but my max just wasn't improving. My hamstring was also hurting every deadlift session Realized something must be wrong. Took 2 weeks off and saw this video. Went to the gym a week ago and hit 500. Never knew my form sucked so bad but after one video I increased my max 50 lbs due to my form. Deadlifted again today and pulled 500 for a triple... once again. Thank you for this video. On my way to a new goal of a 600 lb deadlift

Bart Kwan I noticed that with Larry's sumo, his quads are just about parallel to the floor, yet other instructors from other videos showcase a more (higher) 30-45 degree bend between the knees and the hips. How do you determine which is ideal? experimentation? Are there pros and cons to these varying stances? Thanks
@markf121219 жыл бұрын
The Electrocist I assume it all comes down to hip mobility and being able to get into a position were his quads are parallel to the floor and I would also think that limb lengths come into play aswell as stance width to get your quads parallel to the floor.
@boxlad75838 жыл бұрын
I think the main benefit of doing sumo is the use of your quads(aside from rom) so parallel is more effective in that sense

LegendaryZappyBoy007 hinge pattern vs. squat pattern
@jackb53386 жыл бұрын
Edward rodriguez what? Both are hip hinge, sumo is more quad, convential is more spineal erectors. Sumo is if you can’t get into proper position on deadlifts, due to build. Also allows for shorter ROM, but all the word records are with convential, so it really doesn’t help that much, unless your between 163-220 which is where sumo is stronger.

I am 6'5" and my legs are long as fuck so when I try doing sumo I end up pulling conventionally just with a sumo stance and when I try conventional It looks like a stiff legged deadlift. Also when I feel comfortable opening my legs out wider for sumo but my toes end up touching the plates before I can open out wide enough... the struggles
@hazz218 жыл бұрын
Im 6'4 with long limbs, you just lack the flexibility probably
@WhatTheFuckDumbass98 жыл бұрын
+hazz21 I thought so as well but I met a guy in my gym who is 6' 3.5 and his set up is completely different than mine when our hips and feet are at the same position (his torso would be a lot more upright). We experimented a bit and found that the differences in our form was cus of our different proportions.
@stormerz86057 жыл бұрын
Johnathan Burgess doesnt make sense, if you have long legs you would have the opposite of a stiff legged deadlift, because your legs should bend more than a normal person to get to the bar, i always use this technique when pulling conventional (i do sumo). go behind the bar with your feets middle part being under the bar, stay straight, keep your legs straight and bend your torso forward with your hands trying to reach knee level, when you reach knee level with your hands stop going forward with your torso and just squat down till you can reach the bar, athlean x has a video showing/explaining it
@WhatTheFuckDumbass97 жыл бұрын
+Storm erZ +Storm erZ I was talking about my torso position. When I pull sumo the length of my legs make it so my back is in the same position as people with shorter legs' back when they pull conventional. When I pull conventional my torso ends up being almost horizontal like in a stiff legged deadlift. Remember you can't just squat till you reach the bar sometimes since if you squat too low you won't get enough power in the deadlift. This happens to me so I can't simply find a good torso position and fix my legs to suit then I would be basically squatting the weight and not deadlifting it.
@stormerz86057 жыл бұрын
So if i understood right you have a long torso and your torso is always horizontal because you cant go too down with your legs?

Everybody talks about the benefits of pulling sumo, but I have to say as a person with long limbs and a short torso that even if I practiced sumo for a ridiculous amount of time, I will always pull more conventionally. Your individual bone structure plays a huge role in choosing your deadlift stance.
@puppylovesrabbit9 жыл бұрын
No shit...
@Masterofmonotony9 жыл бұрын
Nostradingus Yes, but you should pull conventional because sumo will get you GREAT carry over, even if your sumo is way less then your conventional, it will make your conventional go up.
@HaarisMajidTraining19 жыл бұрын
Nostradingus im the same, adding a sumo variation on my main squat day has had carryover i think
@bulkingdude19599 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for others, but for me I don't think sumo is a accessory for the squat or conventional. I am personally much stronger at sumo than conventional, but it is really hard on my hips and groin so I only pull sumo once every two to three weeks. I focus on snatch grip deads and stiff legs to build my sumo. I just feel personally sumo fucks with my squat to much to us it as an accessory.
@Masterofmonotony9 жыл бұрын
Bulking dude Yeah especially if you squat with alot of hips, it will mess with your other lift that uses the same muscles there is no question about it.
