HEY!! THANK YOU! For sharing these obstacles that you encountered, as I have never in my life encounrered one of those great sockets with a filled in opening. Those were great little fixes that you implemented. And those Barton Musical Circuits PCBs are really a true bargain if you’re looking to get into DIY for modular synthesizer (which I do NOT recommend to anyone who thinks they’ll cut costs by going that route). It’s a rabbit hole within a rabbit hole, and some call it divorce-wears, I call it eviction wears! A few great S-DIYers have put it best when they said, “you’ll end up spending 250$ to do for yourself what could’ve been done for you for 100$”! That has definitely been my experience. But the education that comes along with the experiences gained is probably about equal to a four year college degree. IF you’re mad enough to stay the course, that is. I mean, it’s something that you really have to want, and only for the sake of wanting. There is no promise of any job or career as an electrical appliance repairman awaiting any electronics hobbyist in today’s world, sadly. I sometimes feel a bit like Don Quixote, who longs for a time before his where he really believes he comes from, when knights in armor rode on horseback and went on crusades. My castles are antiquated machines and my sword - a Hakko soldering station. My shield is a Fluke multimeter and my helmet is an optivisor magnifier. It is my duty to fix what is broken and in that duty my life is given value and purposeful meaning. I am disposed to failure. I Fail and fail harder. Again and again and with ever greater efficiency. I was born late in my day, but I still know what I am and people can laugh at me as they do. I can change for them no more than the present age could change for me. If that is a sad dilemma, then you’ve got the wrong idea!!

I have to disagree about the cost of DIY. For example I was recently looking at the NLC Bong0. There's no option to buy it assembled but SynthCube wants $85 for the full kit. It's a pretty simple circuit with no exotic components; the full BOM exclusive of PCB and panel could be bought for under $15 plus shipping. PCB is $8 and they want $20 for the panel but you could make one for next to nothing. "But then there's your time which is worth $xx per hour" some say. But it's not. My recreation time is worth $xx per hour only if it comes out of time I would otherwise be using to make money, and it's not. I'm certainly not $xx poorer at the end of an hour of soldering. So sourcing my own parts and panel comes in maybe $50 to $60 cheaper than the full kit, which in turn is cheaper than an assembled version would be.
