Personally I don't think that the fullback should be joining the defensive line in-between the 13 and 14. It means there is a huge gap. What you should have is the fullback follow the ball as it goes along the line and then join the defensive line at the end if need be. You're right that the 11 should cover the fullback position, but I've never seen a defensive line leave a gap for the fullback to fill in the middle.

That works as well. Generally with a push defense guys should be pushing on an early miss pass so the gap should not exist long. I like my midfield tight as I generally am more concerned about mid line breaks than getting beat on the outside. This is just one defensive system. There are definitely other approaches and different defenses effectiveness often depends on the level of rugby.

I agree with you Ben Walker that's the way I've always played full back, take the last man. Dont want to allow space on the inside. Plus it gives the full back more time to get outside the winger .

You want your open side taking their 9 and then your 9 getting onto their 10. That way your 10 can take their 12 and so forth.

@@MegaTkls ya different ways you can do this. Definitely something you want to clarify with your team. I never claim the way I do things in the videos is the only way to do it. Most of my videos are put up for regional teams In coach that I have limited practices with. I try to simplify things with the goal of getting everyone one the same page as quickly as possible.

Hi Nevin, have you ever thought about creating a video for your inside-out defensive system? Like defending loops, switches, and defending with less numbers. Thanks
@nevinmorrison4 жыл бұрын
It would be a good idea. Every coach has there own philosophy on each of these. The key is whatever you go with everyone needs to understand and buy in. Generally switches are handled through a switch communication and lane concept. Loops often come with miss passes so early push(next man) on miss passes should be called. Jockeying is another skill when dealing with less numbers. Maybe I could make a video in the future on these things. I also run different defensive systems in different areas and and against different teams. Outside in systems also work well at applying pressure. Good to be thinking rugby again as all of my teams are shut down right now.
