but ampere is rate of flow of charges per unit time, which makes it derived unit because expressed in terms of charge and time

so what about other quantites such as velocity, resistance etc these cannot be basic unit but derived ones?

Not quite, because they have a prefix (c or m) in front of the base unit m

@@jcooke42 i think because a kilogram is more defined than a gram. we have a kilogram of an object in a basement which defines what a kilogram should be. so it became the standard unit. gram is really small too
