Given their mixed histories, I think at the very least Snell and Bellinger were asking for too much. Monty reportedly wanted to go to a team that couldn't afford him. Chapman is the real sticking point for me. Over the last 15-20 the owners have done everything they can to limit the earnings of young players by capping draft bonuses and limiting IFA spending. Then they manipulate service time to get as much out of the underpaid players before they can reach FA. Finally, in the name of the holy profit, they expand the playoffs so much that even mediocre teams have a good chance to get in. Why would they spend on expensive FA's when, for most teams, all that might do is get them a game or three in the standings? Is skipping a wild card series worth $200m?

I don't see a problem. The free agents want more, the owners don't look to pay it. The far bigger problem I see is the taxpayer ripoff the owners pull when getting the public to pay for facilities. Now that is a problem. This means in MOST cases, the taxpayers are footing MLB expenses.

If the Padres didn’t give machado such a big contract they would have been able to resign snell instead of letting him go into free agency,Padres loss for sure 😢

To be fair, I’d rather give a position player more money than a pitcher. Less risk in regards to injury, if a pitcher gets hurt there’s a chance he’ll never be able to pitch again, whereas hitters they’ll at least be able to be serviceable if they fall off from elite imo
