Awesome video. I was looking for a video to help explain the game to a non-American friend. Some more unwritten rules... don't steal a base when ahead by 5 runs after 5 innings... also don't watch your home run... you're likely to get plunked on your next at bat. Well done.

Growing up playing and watching baseball, I never thought it very complicated. I can see now how complicated it would be for someone new to learn the game. You've got the basics here, but there are several more rules and much more by way of basic strategy. What was not very well explained was the basic curtesy used by baseball players. I have never even heard of some of the gestures mentioned. I guess those things are learned by experience though.

This is a pretty good basic explanation. To do a full explanation would take hours. I feel this is why baseball isn't as popular as other sports in America. I feel most Americans would know everything in this video but not fully understand everything that is happening at every second of the game. I played baseball my whole life and know the sport pretty well. To me watching baseball is like watching an intense chess match. There is so much strategy that goes into every piece of the game that most people wouldn't even notice. why is the pitcher throwing this pitch at this time, why are the fielders positioned in that place, etc. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask and I will try to answer as best I can.

3:53 The runner/batter can still be marked for a hit if he gets out as long as he had reached first base safley. Ex: Getting thrown out going for a double is still a statistical hit but does not count for your on base percentage. Or a double

Wonderful video! You did a great job explaining the basics. I will be sharing this with my new Australian friends in preparing them for their first American ball game but with one correction: on the scoreboard, the visiting team is always listed on the top and the home team is always on the bottom. And that's how the innings are referred to: top of the inning means the visiting team is at bat and the bottom of the inning means the home team is at bat. Thanks for a great video.

Did you knew that in the "heart" of Europe there is no baseball winter training? well at least for kids it is not!games also get cancelled for the most pathetic reasons, superficiality in trainings;maybe that is why many coaches from here, move there! my son hates football and everything it stands for ,but adores baseball; he sais it is a smart game ;) that is how I ended up here ;))) we looked everywhere for a club for him but as it seems we must wait for the first bud to bloom ! thank you for the video! it is so confusing at first,I got only the courtesy rules :) but the more you watch ,the more it reveals! @6:45, the Home team bats in the bottom of the inning. This is important because it means the home team bats last when they're behind in the score, or wins outright after the top of the 9th.

1. He runs to the base, if a fielder cannot get the ball by the time they reach the base they are safe. 2. There are 5 hits: Single which is to first Double to second Triple to third and a Home Run which is when they cant get the ball and it goes over the wall

+Pwner Nighty 1) He runs immediately (or should). He does not have to wait for it to fall. The other guy told you that if he gets to the base before the fielder gets the ball, they are safe. This is not true at all. If the ball is hit in the air, the batter is out if that ball is caught before hitting the ground - regardless of whether or not the batter reached first base before it was caught. The bottom line here is that if the ball is hit on the ground (ball hits the ground before being caught), then the batter must reach first base before the ball does. Usually, the ball will be thrown to a player standing on the base - the ball arrives when the player standing on the bag catches the ball. If the ball is caught first, the batter is out. If the batter touches first, he is safe. If the ball is hit in the air, then the batter is out if it is caught OR the ball is not caught and a fielder throws it to first before the batter touches first - - so, the batter should always run to first base on a ball hit in the air - because if it is dropped, he'll already be on first, so he'll be safe. 2) Yes. This would be called a "triple". If he hits the ball in such a way that allows him to run all the way around the bases to third base before the defense can get the ball back in to tag him out, then sure. He can run as far as he wants. Even all the way around to home. This is really rare, but it DOES happen - especially with fast runners. If this happens, it's a home run - and is called an "inside-the-park-homerun". It counts the same as a ball hit over the fence in fair territory. Also, any base runners already on base are free to advance as far as they want. A runner on first base when the ball is hit may run all the way to third if he feels like he can - or home.

great video for a beginner trying to understand baseball! i'm a little bit confused at how they decide the winner, is it only after they play full 9 inning which is decided because of the number of the runs, or can they win within 6 or 7 inning with runs score difference? like in volleyball, a team could be a winner after 2 point difference of 25 score/times up. and how much can a team took a time out during an inning? thank you for the hard work of making the video!

It has to be at least 8 1/2 (if the home team, who bats second, is winning after the losing team bat for the last time, the game ends) but no it doesn't matter if a team has a certain number of more runs.

The world cup is kind of a totally different thing than the super bowl or world series, and is closer to the olympics and similar to the rather newly established world baseball classic. And personally I think the world series is better than the super bowl just because it's 7 games rather than just one which adds to the excitement but that's just me..
