“Baseball’s Bizarre History of Umpire Abuse”
A free KZbin exclusive baseball documentary written, produced, edited and narrated by Retro Baseball.
Over the past couple of years the likes of Angel Hernandez and Joe West have made the fan’s temptation to assault the umpire drastically increase. But you may think that no fan or player has ever been stupid enough to actually attack the umpire during a game, if you thought this, you would be very wrong to say the least, as Major League Baseball has endured a very bizarre in-depth history of sometimes violent umpire abuse.
Today I will tell you some of my favorite stories of forgotten hostile behavior towards are beloved umpire friends that I have found over the past few months of research.
I hope you enjoy.
One of my favorite stories that didn’t make it into the video’s run time:
In 1996, MLB player Roberto Alomar spat in umpire John Hirschbeck's face during a dispute. Alomar received a five-game suspension for the incident, but the punishment was served during the following season, and not the 1996 playoffs. MLB umpires, upset over the lack of an immediate suspension, threatened to go on strike before a federal judge prevented them from doing so.
Footage from the attack by Alomar: • Roberto Alomar Spits i...
Full game broadcast from that day: • Orioles vs Blue Jays (...
Also, here is a Wikipedia article involving other instances of umpire abuse (not exclusive to baseball) that you may enjoy.

I wish I could, but it’s just basically impossible since the videos take 350+ man hours to create and I don’t have a team. Is this the reason why Umpires have began to be mad with power nowadays, by calling shitty calls and throwing out any player/manager who calls them out on it and why MLB isn't doing anything to hold them accountable for shitty calls?

It is absolutely absurd that baseball allows their umpires to be abused in the way they are. And even worse that many fans believe it is just "part of the game". No other sport permits that.
@ziggle5000
@ziggle5000 Жыл бұрын
You act like this level of abuse is still going on when in reality the amount of heckling umpires get these days is just standard for modern sports officials. The only chant you'll hear at every basketball arena in probably about half the games is "refs you suck." Regardless of it being right or wrong to pretend it's a baseball specific issue is just stupid. If you really want to talk about modern abuse of officials then you might want to talk look into the shit soccer referees have to deal with in certain countries where its the biggest sport. Some of the shit they still have to endure goes a little farther than some heckling and mean tweets. So you say no other sports permit that, but looking to the most popular sport in the world immediately proves you wrong lol
@tchevrier
@tchevrier Жыл бұрын
@@ziggle5000 I'm referring to the abuse they receive from the players and managers. NOT the fans. No other sport allows it's participants to abuse the officials the way baseball does. And that is STILL going on today.
@kenconnelly773
@kenconnelly773 Жыл бұрын
@@tchevrier I’m a soccer ref and if you are dismissed (ejected), it’s universal from youth to professional to the World Cup that you will be suspended from your team’s next game (at least). And in the vast majority of leagues staying on the field to “get your money’s worth” after being told to leave results in at least 2 games of suspension. Get ejected, miss the rest of this game and the next one would massively cut down on the disrespect.
@ziggle5000
@ziggle5000 Жыл бұрын
@@tchevrier this simply isn't true either. There's literally a rule in baseball where as soon as a manager begins to argue balls or strikes its an automatic ejection that gets enforced all the time. If you've watched a single quarter of the NBA you'll see more complaining about calls than you'll see in a whole game of baseball. In fact, umpires in modern baseball are notoriously quick to throw out players over almost nothing. Madison Bumgarner got tossed at the start of the game this year for seemingly nothing, feel free to look that one up and let me know how much abuse the ump endured before madbum earned him his ejection.

Still bad because the K zone along with gambling on the tv makes people expect perfection not realizing that most players and managers actually enjoy the human element of the game. Umpires called their pitches in little league middle school highschool and everything up. They’re used to them
