it was the championship game in my tournament. I got a bunt signal in the 6th inning (we played 7) and I stood and watched the first 2 go by. when I had 2 strikes on me I bunted the ball foul on purpose and I got out and ended the inning and we ended up losing the entire game. In the seventh grade, I made the All-Star team. Which was strange, because I absolutely sucked as a hitter. I played a mean shortstop, though. Anyway, playing on that All-Star team was the first time I'd ever seen a curveball. Situation: seventh/last inning, we're down by one with two outs. They'd brought in a relief pitcher, who I figured must have been second-rate compared to their starter. I was wrong. He must have been their ace, who'd pitched the game before and they were now bringing in to shut us down and preserve the win. That curveball scared me half to death. First pitch, I literally stepped out the batter's box, thinking I was gonna get beaned. Of course it broke in for strike one. I figured, that must be one of them curveballs. Second pitch, I knew he'd throw it again, seeing how befuddled I'd been the first time. I was ready to take my crack at it. Sure enough, he threw the same damn pitch second time around, and I swung at it so early that I could've swung twice before it reached the catcher. Not even close! Strike two. So I know sure as I'm standing there that he's gonna throw it a third time in a row. And I also know I am totally outclassed by this kid and am about to strike out on three pitches. Hell no. I didn't even wait for the coach's signal; I decided right then and there that I was gonna lay down a bunt. Yeah, there were two outs in a one-run game, but you can't swing too early if you're squared up for a bunt. Well, he threw the bender and I laid down a humdinger, dropped it right in front of me, and I took off for first. The catcher hadn't seen that coming -- it was a little unorthodox given the situation -- so by the time he's recovered from the shock enough to pick it up, he has to fire off a terribly rushed throw which sails over the first baseman's head. I break left and barrel down to second. Meantime, the right fielder had retrieved the ball, and as Kent Murphy will tell you, he sucked. He overthrew second base worse than the catcher overthrew first and so I took third. Got a damn triple on a bunt! So now the kid with the curveball is having to pitch from the stretch and since he's a righty, he's looking right at me. I start dancing around, taunting him, like I'd rocked his ass. I could tell he was royally pissed, and that got me to dancing all the more. Man I was having fun. I'm clapping and grinnin', hoppin' and hootin'! Tell you what, that pitcher knew I had some damn nerve. I would say I ended up scoring the tying run, but he struck out the next batter on three pitches.
