One point of historical accuracy that was touched on in the movie was the relationship between Anastasia and her grandmother, Maria Feodorovna. Out of the four Grand Duchesses, Anastasia was Maria Feodorovna's favorite granddaughter. They where very close, and her grandmother did give her a music box for one of her birthdays but it had a dancing ballerina in it.

it does not make sense to place this movie in any other country. the reason it's called Anastasia is because in real life there was a myth of Anastasia surviving the execution. so what they did was take that myth and make it into a fairy tale. it's as if they we're saying what if the myth of Anastasia surviving was real and invented a story for little Anastasia. I actually think this was a brilliant idea and it would not work with any other royals in history. the fact that there was a myth behind the real Anastasia is the only reason why this fictional story works.

I think that you are being a little too harsh on the animated movie. You're forgetting that the movie came out in 1997, when the urban legend and mystery of Anastasia still possibly being still alive was still possible. We didn't actually know that the real life Anastasia didn't survive the massacre till 2007, a decade later. If they made the movie TODAY then yeah, it would be disgusting, but back in 97 there was still some hope that Anastasia lived on and found happiness somewhere. It wasn't till 2007 when those hopes were completely crushed. Alot of people hoped for a very long time that she survived as a woman named Anna Anderson.

Rasputin may have been a dear friend to the Romanovs, but he was not a good man, and he, along with Alexandra, was definitely responsible for their deaths. Rasputin was constantly abusing his friendship with the Tsarina to do whatever he wanted, and she never did anything to stop him. Nicolas tried to send him away, but Alexandra was not having it. If either of those two had died before the Revolution, the Romanov line may still continue to this day.

Since I was named Anastaziia (old spelling, same name) and born the same year as the movie, I have always been infatuated with the story of the princess. I spent too much time as a young child watching documentaries and learning different versions of the story. I remember being shocked at around age 6 or 7 to find out that she didn't survive and the woman named "Anya" who claimed to be the lost princess was a fake. Well... my name is Anastasia, too!! And I was born at December 20th... all my childhood I was in a hairstyle like hers (in the animated film) and everybody assumed that I should watch this movie, 'cause I would love it!! Finally, around the age of 9 I got to watch it along with my brother. We were both highly surprised when we saw that the young guy's name is Dimitri (my bro's name is Dimitris... well, we're Greeks). Since then, I feel a kind of connection to this movie... like it describes a past life of mine or something like that. Also, I find really funny the fact that I am for almost 2 years a redhead and I find that it suits me even better than my natural light brown hair (I didn't intend to look more like the character, I just liked the colour)!! Rasputen was very close with the family, especialy the Tsarista but there were rumors spread throughout the country at the time that claimed he was pulling strings in court to gain political power. He was said to take advantage of the Tsarista's trust in him. He also was quite facinated with the Alexei's medical disorder and studied him closely whenever he spent time with him. I'm sure Rasputen was never remotly close to the evil lunatic portrayed in the film, but he was known to be a sketchy guy in court and in and among the people. Its worth noting that the guards had a hard time disposing of the bodies in a way that was untracable. If word got out to the people that the royal family had been murdered, there would have been cout upon cout. The Russian people simply wanted a reformed government. Killing the royals only benefited the leaders in power. First the bodies were thrown down an abandoned mine tunnel and granades were thrown in after them. The guards went back to the house and when they reported back, their commander didn't think it was sufficiant enough. The guards uncovered the bodies and attempted to dismember them. This didn't proove very sucessful because it was dark outisde and the guards were not well equiped for the task. They then tried to burn the bodies with kerosene. this didn't proove sucessful either. Eventully, the soldiars gave up and buried the remains in two seperate graves. One contained Alexei, and one of the younger daughters (Maria or Anastasia) and the other contained the rest of the royal family. When the royalz in the larger grave were found, questions arose about where the other two children were. Alexei was most likely dead. there is next to no way he could have survived the ordeal. But Anastasia was speculated to be the missing sister. There were many imposters who arose but all were proved to have lied. Decades later the second grave was jncovered containing the other children. It was impossible to tell if the missing sister was Maria or Anastasia because they were so close in age, size and apearence. All of this has been backed up by first hand accounts by guards who were there, diary entries from guards and forensic evidence of postmortem burning, sharp force trama and blunt force trama from explosions and rocks.

I'm so glad you find this out cuz there really were people who said and claim that they were Anastasia and there was one actress who was so convincing that she was considered to be the missing girl until her own death.
@morningafternoonheadshot67417 жыл бұрын
Jessica Gillespie yeah, it's a crazy story and some people still adamantly believe she was the real deal, as her handwriting analysis was spot on, and 3 experts confirmed physical features matched her assertions as well. I guess she passed over 150 physical checks including her ears, which do not change over time, and are unique is one that is more obvious that people point out, as well as scars consistent to the bullet wounds etc from the execution attempt. She had supposedly been accepted at first by her aunt and other family members as the real Anastasia, and then about 6 months later, some of the family reneged on their public acknowledgement of this woman. The motives were power, the Tsars sister's children were now considered the rightful heirs to the empire of the monarchy were to return, and the Tsar was the richest man I think in the world at the time of his death, and the $ went to the Govt. The DNA samples were 90 years old and had been so contaminated by sulphuric acid and fire that they should not have been considered viable, on top of the lack of sophistication in the technology in the 80's according to some DNA experts. The royal family claimed she was a factory worker, not an actress by trade and the people who knew the real Anastasia said she knew details that only Anastasia would know about her childhood and even knew the details of the execution that hadn't been released. Idk what to believe, but I do think that it still COULD have been her and she was the victim of a cover up.

Your information is INCORRECT! Your version is NOT so true! They weren't held in Alexander Palace, they were moved twice and died in a city that is now called Yekaterinburg. It wasn't just Maria and Anastasia that were alive after shooting, just like it was never specified who exactly lived a few minutes longer, and they weren't killed with bullets, when they survived the shooting they were killed with bayonets. And about Maria Fyodorovna, she didn't stay in Russia that long, most members of the royal family left the country in 1917-1918, including her, those who didn't were executed. She died in her motherland, Denmark. >>> Read the comment by Kate Lengl moviepilot.com/posts/2015/05/17/the-true-story-behind-anastasia-is-one-that-will-chill-you-to-your-bones-2938288

Dean Yordanov Hey Dean, thanks from linking to that post. I'll post here what I'm going to post there. Hey Kate! Thanks for your comment! You're right about a lot of things! So here's just a couple of points I put together: - They were under house arrest at the Alexander Palace. This is True. But you are also correct! They were moved twice before eventually being murdered. I didn't mean to imply with my video that they had remained only at the palace, so that is my error for failing to communicate that information effectively. - It's possible that Maria and Anastasia were not the only ones to remain alive after the shooting, but I'm basing my information off Yurovsky's notes. In his note he detailed that Anastasia and Marie crouched against the walls, at which point they were shot and killed. However, one of the soldiers under Yurovsky also claimed that they were instead finished off with the bayonets. There are conflicting reports on how exactly they were finished off, but I think the main take away from this should be that the girls were killed, and not how they were killed. - And no, Maria Fyodorovna did not stay in Russia too long after these events. I was merely trying to point out that she didn't live in Paris like the movie suggested. She stayed in Russia and eventually moved out for her own safety. I could have explained this part a little more in detail, but I never thought I was giving the impression that she remained in Russia until she died, only that she died heartbroken. - As for Rasputin's reputation, this is a topic that could span several documentaries. He was infamous. To some he was a saint, to others, the sinner. The purpose of this video wasn't to discuss Rasputin. I even mentioned that some were very critical of his ties to the royal family. My segment on Rasputin for this video's purpose was merely to show that he was close to the family and not an evil sorcerer that was out to get revenge on them. Trust me, I know how controversial Rasputin is in History. His relationship to the family was my only focus here though. I'm happy that this video is creating a discussion though. The Russian Revolution is definitely a dark chapter in recent history. Your points are all spot on, so hopefully you see where I was coming from with my information. (o^.^)b

While Rasputin was a dear friend of the Romonov's, he is at least partially to blame for the uprising and their deaths. His closeness with the family is often cited as a major factor in the revolution. I think the reason they used the story of Anastasia is because there were so many rumors that she had escaped. In fact, there was a woman named Anna who came forward years later saying she was the grand duchess, and was at least slightly convincing. I think they are telling that story more than the story of the real Anastasia. And lastly, that movie you made up sounds freaking amazing! A blockbuster for sure.

I believe that they made this movie also partially on the myth that Anastasia was still alive. Many people came up with theories and truly wanted to believe she was still alive just using a different name. So thus this movie was a sort of happy ending to those. But reality is cruel and Anastasia was really killed as people were later told.

Rasputin was kind of considered a wizard as it took more than one try to kill him including shooting poisoning and drowning with chains and metal balls in ice water, so that's where the movie got its idea of him being a wizard. many people believe that Rasputin influenced Nikolas in his rule if Russia, and believe that he did so to better himself which is how he is seen as a villian in a couple of textbooks. i think it doesn't make it right as he was not a bad guy, and was a loyal Ally, But I can see where they got the idea that he could be a bad guy.
@chantalvarey92627 жыл бұрын
Rasputin was a "loyal friend" in the eyes of Czarina Alexandra, but he had an extremely bad reputation. He frequently visited houses of ill-repute, was frequently drunk and had the worst manners imaginable. There were also rumors that he was "taking advantage" of the eldest daughters Olga and Tatiana. He even bragged about having an affair with Czarina Alexandra which was not true. Unfortunately, Alexandra was too naive to do anything (even believed that there was someone pretending to be Rasputin to give him and the royal family a bad name) and her husband Czar Nicholas II wouldn't stand up to her, so the rest of Russia, specifically the Red-Russians, had no problem doing so. Rasputin was one of the many reasons the Romanovs were executed so I think it's far to make him the villain but hey that's just my opinion.

This is a well put together video. Anastasia was thought to have survived since her remains were not found with the rest of her family. This led to many people claiming to be her in later days. Her remains however were later indeed found and identified by DNA. She had be buried in a separate location many yards from the rest of the family. The movie is well fabricated, but distasteful in a historians eyes.

Rasputin was a dear friend to the Romanovs, but he was not the saintly figure that you seem to believe he was...He was at least a _bit_ of a creepy dude, and here's why: -Literally everyone else in Russia hated him -He was known for being sexually immoral and insatiable -He most likely only kept up the saint act around Alexandra -He was caught multiple times sleeping with different women while married with three kids! -A governess of the four girls reportedly claimed that Rasputin was allowed into their rooms and "caressed" the children -He used his influence on Alexandra to play the tsar and tsarina like puppets during WWI, making important decisions and "influencing" them to execute his orders Alexandra was desperate to keep Alexei alive and to her, Rasputin seemed like the only option. The poor boy was often in excruciating pain during his attacks of hemophilia and Rasputin was supposedly the only one who could ease his suffering; as a result, Alexandra and Nicholas chose to turn a blind eye to all the nasty rumors about Rasputin and trusted him wholeheartedly The children were taught to address him as "Our Friend" and confided in him as they would another parent, but as the unpopularity of the Romanovs grew, stories about him seducing the tsarina and all four daughters become common I'm not saying that Rasputin had only malicious intent or was a two-faced villain, but he definitely was not an angel His manipulation of the family and the tsarina's foolish trust in him played a part in their fate So that's why I think you're being too harsh on the movie :/

Dowager Empress Marie didn't stay in Russia, she escaped and went back to Denmark, her homeland. Otherwise she would've been killed like the other members of the Romanov family. Not only the Tsar, his wife and children were murdered, but other 18 Romanovs too. Like someone else mentioned, by the year this movie was released, the mass grave that had been discovered didn't contain the remains of Anastasia (or Marie --this is still up to debate between the forensics) and her brother, Alexei. The rumour, legend and mystery was still alive. It was only in 2007 when Anastasia and Alexei's remains were found.

The reason the movie is called Anastasia is because it is based on the story of a young woman who had con many across Europe into thinking she was the Grand Duchess. During that time, it had been rumored that either her or her sister Maria had managed to escape, though later years after the fake Anastasia's death, it was revealed that both girls had died the same day as their family.

This is so well made! Now I know a bit more about Rasputin. I didn't really realize that he was the real bad guy in the movie but he was a really loyal friend in real life... Interesting hmm, but I mean they can't have people shooting with guns in child-movies, of course, so then who would be the bad guy then if not their "family friend"? I guess the creators of the movie couldn't think of an other way of how to "kill off" the family except "Evil Magic" by the family friend..?

I would argue there is far less a problem this than more serious, live-action Hollywood movies which follow actual timelines yet still strip down the source material into a shoddy duality. At least people with a small amount of mental faculties could tell that most if not all of that film was divorced from reality.

You forgot to mention that at one point the family thought that Rasputin was immortal because he was poisoned in an assassination attempt, but didn't die. He was possibly also believed to have been sexually involved with the princesses because he well known as, let's just say, a lady's man.

The grandma is in real life Dagmar of Denmark. But she was getting maried with zar Alexander 3 of Russia. And when she got married she got the name Marija. Alexander 3, died in 1894. Now was Dagmar the only one of the throne, and in 1917 comed the russian revolution. There was Nikolaj 2 zar of Russia, he and hes family was getting execute in 1918. The only one of the royal family who survived the revolution was Dagmar. Dagmar fleed to Denmark, and she died there in 1928 in Denmark. So the whole history in the movie is not right. Anastasia was getting shot, and after that Marija/Dagmar fleed to Denmark, she never get back after that. But she is to day lie in Saint Petersburg beside her man Alexander.

there was a story of a girl turning up not knowing who she was and claiming to be Anastasia. She knew intimate details of the family that a stranger couldn't know. Years ago I saw a documentary and they matched up the remains to confirm that Anastasia was one of those killed but one of her sisters was missing. And the way the girl told her stories seemed to suggest she remembered Anastasia but that she wasn't her. Regarding Rasputin there were stories of how he demanded sex for services of the women he saw and other horrible things and the account of his death is weird but as they say history is written by the victors.

An incredible broadway production recently began showing in New York, and though the basic storyline is the same, it fixes some of the issues that "left a bad taste" in your mouth. Rasputin is not the villain in this new story, but rather a Bolshevik officer named Gleb who, when the communists hear that Anya is learning how to be Anastasia, is ordered to assassinate her. Gleb's growing feelings for Anastasia make this difficult, and eventually, after confronting her in Paris, he returns to Russia and claims that Anya never was Anastasia in the first place in order to protect her. The Dowager Empress tells the same story to the press, allowing Anya and Dmitry to run off together and be safe. It's really an incredible production with superb music, and it touches on the true history of the Russian Revolution in a way that the animated film did not.

An important thing to note is that it wasn't until 2008 that Anastasia was confirmed to have been killed with her family. At the time of the film's creation, her possible disappearance was still a huge mystery that baffled most historians. So, it's safe to say that the film was not made in bad taste, but took to light the mystery behind the history, despite it's numerous flaws in historical accuracy. In fact, if you want a somewhat better production, check out the stage production adapted from this film. Rasputin makes no appearance, and is instead replaced by a Russian general who's madly in love with Anya, and pursues her strongly to keep her from running away, sans magic and soul-selling.

Actually evidence shows that while the Romanov family were friends with Rasputin since he 'miraculously' treat Alexei, Rasputin was a shady character. Though nothing like how he is portrayed in the animated movie. Alexei had an incurable hemophilia (sorry if I spelled that wrong) which causes Alexei to suffer from hemorrhaging or bad internal bleeding and even for him to be unable to heal is he got injured. Example being that if he stubbed his toe or he lightly bumped into something even without falling he would have painful internal bleeding and if he ever scrapped his knee or got a cut somehow, his blood is very slow to clot (if it clots) and stop bleeding to heal. Even with bandages and bed rest. So Alexei was often carried by someone when he was little to make sure he didn't hurt himself as the condition was quite deadly and little was known about it back then. Oh sorry!! I got side tracked lol. Anyway, yes Rasputin was a dear friend to the Romanovs due to how he was able to somehow ease Alexei's condition which the family was very happy for. But some sources, evidence & biographers state that Rasputin was still a shady character who was viciously hated by both the nobles and the citizens. Men especially hated Rasputin because of his sexual prowess with women, even noble women and their belief that Empress Alexandra was having an affair with Rasputin and thus had some power over the Romanovs and the country. Some say that Rasputin was never a monk, that he was a con man, a charlatan and someone who enjoyed sex. Perhaps a little too much as it's reported that Rasputin believed that to deliver and cleanse one's soul of sin that they must first indulge in sin and then a soul be purified. Rasputin is thought to have used the 'sin of lust' for this with just about any woman he met and believed him. Apparently a lot did believe him since they thought he was a holy man who could perform miracles. The Romanov family never saw this side of Rasputin though and when they heard stories of Rasputin's sexual activities, they happily dismissed them as idle rumor. Especially since they also firmly believed Rasputin was Alexei's health. The only son & legitimate heir to the throne. The nobles & relatives of the family decided to get rid of Rasputin themselves by any means necessary as they were convinced he was to blame for the unrest of the Russian people. So Rasputin is invited to a private party but everyone there is in on a plot to kill him. First they poison him by placing the poison (don't remember which poison) in the drink and possibly food. They wait and realize he should be dead because Rasputin had ingested enough poison to kill 3-6 people. Who can say if Rasputin had divine protection and what not at that point lol? Frustrated and impatient Rasputin's killers then decided to kill him the hard way. I don't remember exactly what they did but if I remember correctly, after the poison didn't work they decided to shoot him then wrapped up his body and threw his dead body into the river that ran through St. Petersburg. Which I'm sure was very cold since I think he was killed in the winter of late 1917 or early 1918. Later Rasputin's body was dragged out of the river and doctors/coroners found that Rasputin died from drowning since there was water in his lungs. There wouldn't be any or at least not as much water in a person's lungs as Rasputin had if they were dead before being thrown into the water. After being heavily poisoned and shot, Rasputin survived and his cause of death was drowning! Divine protection? Maybe. Extreme good luck to survive being shot and poisoned? Maybe. I'm not religious or superstitious but damn I wish I had that kind luck or protection. My point basically is while Rasputin is nothing as he was portrayed to be in this film but was still of questionable character though I personally find nothing wrong with Rasputin being sexually insatiable depending on how far he took it. Like use force or have sex with children. I don't recall anyone saying or implying that he did take it to that extreme though. And I'm not entirely sure whether or not he was a monk or not. Or if he really did have any religious/spiritual faith. All I can say for sure is that based on those things I can't really say he was either a good person or a bad person though it's easy to label him a bad person, especially if you're religious. And his death didn't stop the unrest and eventual revolution of Russia as his murderers believed. This movie, Anastasia, was made out of the film makers fascination with the myth, legend and hope of Anastasia. Who many believed and hoped to have survived the night her family was slaughtered by revolutionaries. No one hoped that one of the Tsar's children survived more than Russia. Who can say for 100% certainty that they were all killed that night and no one survived. As many know, Russia isn't keen on the truth or good judgement. This will likely continue to be debated no matter how much evidence is found. R.I.P. Nikolas, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia & Alexei.

The girl's and their brother were pretty much unaware about how "normal" life was, their parents kept them on a very short leash especially after their brother was born. She was 17 when she died. When they were all killed, they thought they were being moved somewhere, but they ended up being taken somewhere else, they were all shot and bayonetted to death, their bodies were thrown in a mineshaft, and doused with acid.

Supposedly, Fox went to Don Bluth with two of their old movies and said he had to remake one of them and the other would be remade as a live-action film, those two films were Anastasia (duh) and Titanic and we know which one went which direction. Also, when the film came out in 1997, the mass grave containing the bodies of the Romanovs were two bodies short. Only in the early 2000s was another grave site found and DNA confirmed that the grave contained the missing two Romanov children.

Much like the movie, this video also left out a lot of history. Like the Czarina's particular intimacy with Rasputin, Rasputin's enormous influence, his...peculiarities regarding religion and hygiene, his prophecy regarding his own death, Anastasia's and Alexei's missing bodies from the royal family's mass grave, and the number of pretenders who came forward over the years, claiming to be either Anastasia or Alexei. Point being, these facts were ripe for embellishment.

I actually agree with the Narrator on how he felt about the film. I liked it as a child but once I came to know the true story it left a weird taste in my mouth, I can't see the film as I could before. Reason being that the actual story on Anastasia is tragic to say the least, they were children who were murdered to mark the end of the monarchy and nothing else.
@soph20377 жыл бұрын
The reason the creators called the movie "Anastasia" is because of the rumor. After the family was shot, they were buried. The rumor was that Anastasia, the youngest daughter, had managed to escape. This was assumed because a body was missing in the burial, but was later discovered in a different location.

I knew the story from the time I was small and knew from the start that the Romanov family all had died that night, though I do not know for certain that knowing that caused me to like the movie any less. The fact is, there was a time when many believed that Anastasia could indeed have survived the murder of her family, and escaped when guards were unaware she was still alive. Though this has been proven to be false, the fact remains that there was a point in time when people fully believed that the grand duchess could have survived to live her life elsewhere, away from Russia and her family's fate. I still like to believe that Anastasia did escape, but was found and killed and discarded in the same way her family was. Though I'll never know this to be true or not, we should remember the Romanov family and honor them, as they died horribly and unjustly.

I mean, technically, Rasputin advised Czar Romanov to make some pretty "unpopular" plans. Which, ended up disconnecting him from his extended family and finishing any hopes the Czar could have had to align his people with him. Maybe the movie writer tried to capture that aspect, seeing that Rasputin had a large hand in their ultimate death? Maybe. Or, maybe I'm looking too hard lol.

Anastasia lived a long live unlike her brother who got sick and died. She live under the name Eleonora Kruger.

I can’t believe this video didn’t mention the real woman who many believed she was Anastasia. Her story is what the 1950’s was (very loosely) based on. I have always been interested in the history of the Romanovs and the story of Anastasia. I remember being a little disappointed/saddened when it was finally confirmed she died with her family. Also if anyone was a real life wizard it would be Rasputin. He was poisoned with insane amounts and didn’t die. That man had more lives than a cat. Years earlier he had been stabbed in the stomach and survived.

Rasputin was actually not as good as he seemed, while the zhar was in the ground lines dealing with the Germans he left Alexandra in charge, she then turned to Rasputin. He gave them political advice and pretty much controlled Alexandra who pretty much controlled the Zhar, he was also believed to have taken advantage of the duchesses in the end he played a big role in sealing the Romanavs fate. Even the eldest daughter, Olga thought of Rasputin’s death as a blessing in disguise, as she wrote in her diary for she Too realized the power he had over her parents
