Building a monster rack gives you some up front options like height and swapping out upgrades but all this can be done in the RML if you ask.

One advantage I don’t hear people talk about much, in reference to the Westside hole spacing on the Rogue ML racks, is precision safeties for squat. I get more of benefit from that versus benching. You can set your safeties an inch from the bottom of your squat. So, if you fail, you barely have go to further before it catches.

I bought a 1.5" socket at Lowes to make assembly easier. The guy in the tool department said he didn't think he had any of those but he rummaged around in a drawer and found three. He said to come back and get another one if I break it. The register guy wanted to know what I would do with it. He guessed that I was working on a big marine engine. I told him that my use for the socket was so silly that I was embarrassed to say. A socket that large makes one heck of a paperweight.

I think having 1 inch holes like the Monster Rack would be more useful when it came to adding accessories. Why does it cost almost $400 more though? Is it because it's a pain in the ass to drill the bigger holes? If it's the same steel, I don't understand the significant different in price. Going from $755 for an RML-3 to $1145 for the RM-3. Then again, there are other areas in life where people are willing to pay a lot more for their preferred hole.

Monster over rml... The uhmw, numbers and extra accessories are worth it. Some of the attachments are only monster not just later. Utility seat, rotating chin bar have been out for a very long time... Several years so i doubt they will come out for rml at all. Have the rml now but wish i had gotten the monster.. The one inch hole spacing not a big deal to me since i have the westside bench. 1 inch holes do make a difference on bench for sure but isnt a deal killer.

Do you like the Westside Bench? I've been eyeing it hard. I think have a fixed bench that is the same every time you bench is really nice. Money is not a concern, I only care about the function. And if I have a westside Bench does that mean I shouldn't get an rml?

@@dbsasuke i love it... Was on the fence at first before i got it... Takes up no space.. Nice to not have to set up the power rack and have a consistent setup. I haven't seen the monster westside but must be a total beast as the Westside can handle more than anyone can bench esp raw. The one inch spacing really only for bench so if getting westside id just get a monster rack. The rotating pull-up bar is the most overpriced attachment Rogue sells, by a factor of 10. There's a reason they haven't released it for the monster lite, and it's probably because they aren't selling it in high volume. $445? You can buy a pair of rotating, hook-style grips that hang from a pull-up bar for less than $70 that essentially accomplish the same thing. I have a pair made by a company called Stamina and I've been using them for at least 5 years. Do they give you the exact same functionality? No, but it's close enough considering the massive price gap. I have the Crown pull-up bar from Rogue which is far more versatile, and it was $225.

The reason I came here is because I was searching for the Monster Lite Half Rack review and saw you have one and also saw this. Figured I'd watch this first. I don't really have a preference vs. monster vs. monster lite.. But I have a limited space and Monster Lite Half Rack makes sense to me to have ability to store the plates and also still have it around that 4-4.5 foot depth... The only thing I see from the Monster Line that has an extra space for the weight plate holders is one where it's like a crazy 6 foot deep which is waaay too big for my space.

I know im 4 years late but great review! I've been trying to decide on the monster lite half rack and the monster collegiate rack but 90" is as high as i can go because of my 95" ceiling and with the monster collegiate rack the back uprights are 90" and the fronts are angled up to 100". I think it was one of your videos where you said Rogue said they'd raise one of them to be even at 100". Wondering if it would be possible for them to cut the 100" front down even to the 90" in the back so it would be the same height at 90"s each. Basically, i want it just like the monster light half rack, but with the same 1 inch bolt sizes instead of 5/8ths and especially for the lasered numbers cut out. Without the numbers, I'd probably just go with the monster light, thats the biggest selling point for me. Thanks!

Great Video to go along with your series on choosing this one. I keep debating which one to get and this sort of comparison vid is really helpful. Ah that's a good question, the RML ones are better IMO. Although I don't need to take them off that often, it also makes adjusting easier. On the RM ones you can only move them a few holes at a time before you have to do the other side to catch up. Maybe I'll do a video on it.

If I went with the Monster series, I'd want it in 7 gauge metal thickness (I saw the 7 gauge Monster set-up at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, FL during CPPS Level 1 cert with Joe Defranco/Jim Smith) Unfortunately, I do not think Rogue offers the Monster series in a 7 gauge option anymore. I currently have a MonsterLite RML-490c and while it is MORE than adequate for my garage gym, with its 11 gauge thickness (like the current Monster 2.0 series) you can easily warp the uprights when tightening the bolts during the assembly process - you do not need to be super strong either to make this mistake. No way that will happen with a 7 gauge. (and yes, I know I don't need a 7 gauge... but this is 'Murica, right? RIGHT?!!!)
@extrasmack
@extrasmack 5 жыл бұрын
This!! ^^ What first made me notice Rogue was their original Monster line in 7ga. That was the whole point of naming it monster. At 3x3 7 ga. it really was a monster. They later offered the Monster Lite in the current 3x3 11ga. That was the key difference other than 1 inch vs 5/8. Monster was 7 Lite was 11. When they changed the "Monster" line to 11 same as the Monster Lite they in escence kept it monster in name only imo, other than the 1 inch hardware of course. It's just not really worth the price difference any more since it's essentially a monster lite with a hardware upgrade. Man I really wish I'd had the chance to get a real Monster rack back when they were still available. Nobody in a home setting NEEDS 7ga. but if you can why the hell not do it?

Hey Brandon! Short time viewer here, first time caller..... I really dig this video, since in the search for the half rack series I wondered, why is he wanting that hardware? So. Here's my question, and thus a continuation of this whole shebang. What are the Pros / Cons to the different types of safeties you see commonly offered - pin/pipe, strap, flip down? Then, what REALLY is the difference between the J-cups. maybe I just haven't seen the different ones in person, but they all seem greek to me. Cheers.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 5 жыл бұрын
I have a dedicated video on why I prefer safety straps, but in the long run, the answer is it depends on what you want. Pipes/pins offer you a cheap easy option, but can be tough to adjust due to weight, and they can also bend over time (or bend your bar with drops). Straps offer less of a chance of damaging the bar and will never bend themselves. You can also offset them to control where the bar goes when you fail (forward/backward/center). Flip down offer the benefits of pins, but almost always have UHMW padding on them to protect your bar some. Might be a good topic for a video.

Great videos! I’m having a difficult time deciding between the RML-490C and RM-4! What made you change to the RM-4? I’m too tall to overhead press in the RML-490C but the extra few inches in the RM-4 would allow it. However, the higher price on the RM-4, the higher accessory prices, the less steel due to more holes (does this remove from the RM-4’s durability?), and lack of facelift for the RM-4 2.0 which last occurred in 2017 compared to the RML-490C 3.0 which occurred in 2019 are making me hesitant :s Any extra points to help me make the decision?

Do you notice a difference in the stability or sturdiness of the attachments going from 5/8 in bolts vs 1 in bolts? For example, with the j-cups, do you find that the 1 inch bolts make a difference when you rack the barbell on the monster rack vs the 5/8 inch bolts in the monster lite?

Brandon, since u have owned both the Monster Lite Safety Straps and now the Monster Safety Straps, do you notice the Monster series are allot more taut? I own the ML Safety Straps and the amount of slack is ridiculously excessive. To the point I feel it's an engineering flaw since your absolutely forced to offset them front to back and often times with the bar coming back towards your face on bench press, (since the J-Cups prevent from going higher on those uprights.) I truly do feel they invest more time/effort into the Monster series.
@BasementBrandon

To be honest, I'm not sure if it's a Monster vs Monster Lite thing, or just some straps are sewn a big shorter. That being said, I do like the current ones I have as my old ones did have a lot more slack, but moving these up and down is more of a pain b/c I can only move them 3-4 holes before having to go and move the other post side to catch up.

If you're saying this judging from his old rack it's because this rack is a 4 post rack whereas his RML was a 6 post rack. The Monster and Monster Lite racks are the same in pretty much every way except for the obnoxiously large hardware for the Monster line. As for accessories.... I am pretty sure the RML line has all the same accessories as the Monster line - you just have to wait longer for them to release it to the RML line after the release it to the Monster line. My point.... the Monster line just isn't worth the added cost. If you like the aesthetics though... might be for you but that is literally the only true thing that separates the two lines. yes you can get the monster racks in 8.33 and 9 foot high options but who has ceilings that high to accommodate that? my garage has the ability to juuust fit the 100" uprights but if I had them I'd be head butting the ceiling on every pull up. I damn near do that with my RML-490 at 90" high (7.5 feet). That said... pretty sure upon checkout you can just request them to send you 100 or 108" uprights instead of the standard 90" the RML comes with... at an additional cost. And really, while the accessories they offer are pretty cool the only ones I could ever see using/ buying are the dip station and their pullup bar selections. everything else is cool...... but completely unnecessary. You can get their dip station and PU bars on any rack line though. Landmine attachments.... cool.... but do you have a corner in your room? yes. there is your landmine "attachment."

For those comparing the freestanding models...After spending considerable time going over the details of the Monster 390F and Monster Lite 390F, the major differences are: 1) Rack Depth. The Monster only gives you 24 inches. You get 30 inches with the Monster Lite. This is a bonus for the Monster Lite, especially considering that the overall footprint on the Monster Lite is smaller, yet you still get more rack depth to walkout for squats. 2) Laser engraved holes on the Monster. This is a bonus for the Monster if you plan on moving pins frequently. Personally, I keep the hooks in the same spot when doing overhead presses and squats, so those only get moved when I do bench. As far as the safety pins, those also stay in the same spot for me. I don't do rack pulls or exercises that require frequent moving of the safety pins. YMMV. In any case, if you move either of those up and down frequently, you can make your own markings on the Monster Lite. Advantage for the Monster, but only in certain scenarios. 3) Appearance. Clearly a win for the Monster. It looks like a nicer rack. 4) Value - this is a clear win for the Monster Lite. The Monster is $416 more, before you add the additional tax. The Monster Lite is a deal at $795. 5) Attachments - based on what I've read online (take that with a grain of salt), Rogue releases attachments for the Monster first, then later on they release them for the Monster Lite. However, at this point virtually every attachment you could want has been released for the Monster Lite. If you're still looking for more attachments, you're probably needlessly spending money. In another comment someone mentioned the rotating pull-up bar isn't available for the Monster Lite. At $445, this is the most overpriced attachment Rogue makes, by a factor of 10. I suspect they haven't released it for the Monster Lite because it isn't selling well. If there were high demand, they'd be making it for the Monster Lite. Most people who pick the Monster probably like the way it looks, and it "feels" like a nicer rack. Aesthetically speaking, it is nicer, but taking into account everything above, the Monster Lite is a better deal for 90% of people building a home gym. If the Monster had the same 30" depth and was only say $200 more, then it would be a harder decision.

@@kieranwhitton-booth5354 The easy answer if you want people attending to think it's high quality would be Rogue, as it's prob the most popular/well known brand right now. You wouldn't have to go top of the line and could go infinity racks (2x3) and still have commercial grade quality.
@Pler1978
@Pler1978 5 жыл бұрын
@@BasementBrandon doesn't really commercial grade if want to impress people and have a good budget a row of monster racks perhaps a row of monster half racks or double sided half racks if space is tight. R3 is a good home gym rack.

Do you feel the rack needs to be bolted to the floor? For the RM3.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 жыл бұрын
No but I think you need something to stabilize it still.
@mizzo011

I would not get either of them. Get an infinity rack. The 2x3 tubing is better for clearance and 3x3 is way overkill. You can't go wrong with a Rouge R-3 Power Rack for your home, or even if you're starting a commercial gym.

The R3 is fantastic, but that doesn't mean the RML or RM isn't the right fit for a person. Really depends on what they want.

Love your vids man. Quick question though. Since you can't bolt your rack down do you ever have any issues with it skidding on the ground? Cause you lift monster weight.

Hey Brandon, I'm currently working with $70 independent stands, at what point should I upgrade to something like a squat stand with safeties? Or is even that enough? Thanks, I'm new to your channel and I'm really enjoying it.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 5 жыл бұрын
The sooner the better IMO, but that's only my opinion. With stands you're limited in the exercises you can do, but most importantly they're not as safe.

I have a Rogue RM-4 and it's a beast of a rack. As far as quality it really can't be beat. Looking back though I probably would've gone with the R3 and saved a thousand dollars. If money isn't an option though it's great.
