I’m just starting out in this and have a question. You have videos on both your “layout” and your “dioramas”. (All VERY good I must add.) If there some specific point or thing that defines the line between the two?
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
Not really in my case. A diorama usually focuses in on a smaller footprint when creating a scene that supports a primary subject matter - in this case - trains. A diorama can support any theme if it wants to. The Diorama has a long history as the pre-runner to cinema before the silver particle negative camera was invented. The Diorama concept was miniaturized and adopted by military modelers and model railroaders in the nineteen - seventies. I just simply apply the Diorama "doctrine" and emphasis on realism, to the model railroad because I can. It is one obsessive approach to the multiplicity of approaches when modeling a railroad. I hope that helps. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Thanks for showing the benefits of acrylic paints. Having been using solvent based paints for 50 years, I was reluctant to try the water based paint. This video convinced me to give it a try. Since the abandoned farmhouse turned out so well, I bought the kit and gave it a try. I even used the paints you had used. You made a believer of me. I’m sold!

Good to hear. Once you cross over from solvent to acrylic paint there is no going back. I mean you can put solvents over acrylic for additional effects if you want, but it is all achievable with water-based paint now. Who knows, maybe that mystery "allergy" goes away once you drop solvent based paint. It makes for a more friendly environment as well. ;-)

To follow up on my previous post - I was so pleased with the results that I took a City Classics “Company House” and added additional details to include adding 2x2” vertical post to the upper sashes of the windows, 2x6 rafters, and gutters with downspouts. Painting followed using the same techniques as the farmhouse. Your videos have been a great inspiration. Please keep it up.

Glad to hear it. Make sure you pick up a few bottles of the Tamiya (XF-86) "Flat Clear." You can also thin it down a fair bit, and it still works wonders if you want to stay with acrylic (low odor) paint and desire a nice dead flat sealer coat over you finished paint. The beauty is you can lay oil paint right over top of Tamiya with no bad results as well. ;-)

Awesome kit. Out here, this would be 1900 and earlier. By 1920, the roof pitch dropped. Ceiling height dropped from 12' to 10' stud. I prefer the older style of house. There are still many examples of the older style that still exist in many states of repair. As we are also a colony, we have similar building styles here. That porch is a fantastic addition to the house. I might have to see if DPM do this kit in N scale.

Boomer, hello again from Arizona. You've done it again...but of course you do it every time. An exquisitely assembled video, beautifully lighted and shot, with long, slow pans across your masterpiece usually with something in motion to give us all inspiration. As always you mixed a master's-class lesson with needed words of encouragement to those of us just trying to move in your direction. I can honestly say I've learned more usable, and achievable, techniques from your channel than any other. Wet painting, stain painting, what a revelation to us relative beginners! And a special thanks for taking the time and effort to show us the actual detail of *how* you do something, not just describing *what* you did before we joined you. Weathered plywood--I don't need it right now but I think I'm going to try it just because it was so effective and seemingly easy enough to do. Heck, I might just throw a mangled piece on a random flat car! Once again thank you for all of your time and effort--you are truly teaching so many, so much!

Dear Boomer, so cool to see how you ‘develop’ the different shades, from the artificial shades under the eaves, to the various colors and layers, let’s say, communicating the story of dilapidation and decay. Another fantastic video, so glad i found you, so informative! Ive two questions, not really related, but i have been searching through videos for days. When you spray a mix of IPA and water to open up a ground layer to receive very runny matte medium....what are the ratios of IPA to water, and matte medium to water?
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
It's a bit like personal alchemy if that makes any sense. Best to go on feel and experience when it comes to layering ground work with IPA and Matte medium. I'm still learning the game. I usually try and avoid IPA mixed directly with Matte Medium because it can form an undesirable white grey or white stain residue when it dries. I usually dilute matte medium 50/50 with water for the most part. No IPA. On the other hand, you can cure any anomalies that occur after it all dry's by re-flooding the "dry" area with straight IPA or paint. I tend to mix about 50/50 IPA with water for starters and then reduce the IPA from there. The advantage of IPA is it breaks the surface tension of terrain and allows the paint and adhesive to penetrate and settle out better. I hope that helps. Cheers ~ Boomer.
@sylwitcha5325 Жыл бұрын
Thankyou so much. Ive heard you say various mixes for the IPA and water. And the real runny matte medium and water. I wouldnt mix matte med and IPA. Ive learned so much from you, i so appreciate all the info you tell us!

Hi again! Another question...did i hear you say in another video that once youre TOTALLY finished making a tree you spray it with a thin coat of matte medium?
@boomerdiorama Жыл бұрын
Yes I do! On the other hand, you can also use Acrylic Flat Coat from a "spray bomb" as well. Try to avoid lacquer or solvent based (clear coat) paints and adhesive on your trees if you want them to last and stay rigid. Why? Because the lacquer and solvent based products corrode and eat away at the tree flock or (static grass) and they fall apart after a few year when you handle them.

Awesome! Thanks for your patience. I ll go spray my trees now....matte medium all the way!

The cement bonds the plastic better than cementing over paint, which will not bond well. So you would have to scrape off the paint. Why do double work?
