"Andre Galvao is one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all time, with 6 IBJJF World Championship titles, 10 IBJJF Pan American Championships, and 6 ADCC World Championship titles (4x as the ADCC Super Fight Champion). He received his black belt from Luis “Careca” Dagmar, having also worked extensively with Fernando Terere. Galvão is also a former mixed martial artist, with an MMA record of 5-2-0 before he retired to lead the Atos Jiu-Jitsu Academy's Headquarters in San Diego, California. Can someone tell me why your opponent wouldn't put you in their closed guard from the butterfly here?

Andre mentions that you want to keep your opponents heels as close to their rear as possible to prevent this, however, if your opponent is able to free his legs then the move simply transitions to half guard, full guard, etc. See 3:02

If you allow your knees to get too wide then they can easily put you in closed guard, but the key to staying out of closed guard is to really lock down the hips and keeping their ankles attached to their butt. But also what helps me is to look at the body lock as more of a concept/system instead of just a technique. There are so many variations and possible scenarios that you can't realistically rely on the same exact steps every time. A high tripod body lock pass is different than a tight waist body lock pass. Gordans body lock study on bjj fanatics had a amazing breakdown. The biggest issue with people teaching body lock passing is that they always just show one path which is usually the tight waist pass, things change alot depending on whether you can get an underhook or whether or not your trying to split, stuff, or shelf the legs.
