Hey Paul. Lovely to see these rare videos to service these cameras. I have a question. Which lubricants should be used for this Bolex D8L? I have been shooting in cold weather and when I do, the sound of the motor goes quiet and it seems the camera is shooting at very low speed (I always shoot at 18fps). Do you know if I should be able to use this camera in cold temperatures? Nothing extreme, something like 26 F (-3 C). Thanks!

Hi @karimetorres328. The only issue with these cameras partly with your comment is the Bolex pocket 8mm spring motor. It's sealed and wasn't meant to be repaired only replaced. So, Bolex only applied a small amount of graphite grease decades ago inside that motor. And now it's dried up. That's some of the scraping you're hearing. In addition, under the winding key (that can be opened for servicing) are micro mini springs and bearings, a large wire spring and a large spring washer. All that needs to be dismantled, cleaned, new graphite grease applied then put back together. I have a video series concerning this and it will resolve much of the issue. I can repair the motor and will show that in time. "If" you choose to service your Bolex make sure to 1St full wind down it's spring motor. If not upon dismantling the spring motor will instantly unwind and snap to a stop broken. A Bolex camera (or any vintage movie camera) when a filmmaker 1St gets it needs to send it to a technician for a CLA aka Cleaned Lubed and Adjustment. This is because these cameras have been packed away in an attic for years. Check the shorts videos as well because they contain valuable information. You're very welcome and thank you for the kind words.

Remember, if you've just purchased your Bolex and it doesn't operate never spray WD-40 inside it. View my video on this subject to learn why and more tips. Never Service Your Bolex With WD-40 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl7VdJyMlLFmask
