Imagine 3x as 3x to the first power [3x^(1)]. If you take the 1 and put it in front of the x, it would be 3x times 1 times x to the 0 power, or 3(1)[x^(0)]. x to the 0 power is equivalent to 1. So 3 x 1 x 1 = 3.
