Hello friends! Welcome to my first tutorial video! These are very basic and meant for people who just want to have fun and enjoy themselves while doing something crafty.
If you haven't been brought here from my spinning packet, then welcome anyway! Hopefully this video will help anyone trying to learn to use a drop spindle in a very casual way.
**NEW WEBSITE!!: I finally made my own website for fiber art! No more Etsy! Yay!!***
www.meganriskfiberart.com/pro...
Vocab:
Whorl - the weighted part of a drop spindle that helps it to spin. Also the spindle pulley that regulates the speed of a spinning wheel spindle.
Draft - the pulling out of fibers to allow only a certain amount of the fiber to twist into thread.
Drop spindle - (hand spindle) a stick with a weighted whorl that is used to twist fibers into thread.
Plying - winding two or more yarns together; must be done in the opposite direction to that in which they were spun.
Roving - long tubes of carded wool, produced by carding machines.
Keep in touch!

I have tried multiple times over several years to learn how to spin with a drop spindle. And nothing worked; I'd get so frustrated I'd feel like crying. Your lesson here showed me how to do it, and it works! I am spinning using a drop spindle! I'm doing it! Not only that, but after practicing awhile, I'm beginning to get the feel of how to make the thread as thick or thin and as spun as I prefer. Less tightly spun is softer. Thank you thank you thank you for making and posting this video. I'm finally at the beginning of mastering a skill I've wanted to do for years. I'll be watching for more videos from you.

You showing that you hold the BULK of the fiber and tug just a thin bit, has made it finally make sense. For whatever reason my brain thought I had to spin the whole chunk into the tiny twist you have, but this actually makes sense

Megan , I was recently watching several documentaries about the 3000 year old Tarim Basin Mummies of western China and so they (archaeologists) were also featuring about how well their wool clothing had preserved on them and that they've found many wooden drop spindles at the burial dig sites and so afterwards I was curious as to just how those ancient people could make clothing from a simple hand spindle like the one you're using and now after watching your video I have a much better understanding of this and so a BIG '''thank you''' for producing these videos.

Jesse Lee Wow! Thank you! The history of drop spindles (all over the world, really) and the general production of yarn (of all types of fiber) is also fascinating to me. I've only just dipped my toe into the world of drop spindle history, and I can't wait to pick up more. I'm glad my silly video helped you understand the basics of drop spindles! I am hoping to get my hands on a few different styles from around the world (like a Turkish drop spindle, for example) and through time (hopefully some antiques) and do a little demo of the different spindles.

MeganERiskTutorials Lol, well I have to admit that I'd never thought that I would watch a video about spinning wool to make yarn however after watching those documentaries I was so intrigued as to how ancient humans made their clothing with just a simple wooden drop spindle nearly identical to the one you're using that I just had to find out how it was done and so again '''thank you''' Megan and best wishes to your KZbin Page & Tutorials.

@Jesse Lee what started it for me was wondering how people made fishing nets without giant automated tying machines thousands of years ago, learned how to make nets, and then got interested in cordage and eventually textiles in general and here i am. It all started with the humble drop spindle. really as simple as just a stick in some cultures, rubbed against the side of the leg to introduce twist and allow more consistent and faster cordage production. You could say that this simple device is one of the cornerstones of human civilization, as so much came from it.

Similar sentiments of appreciatation! I'm reading a book about textile manufacture in the first 20,000 years of human life and found it hard to picture the process. This, along with a video on how different fibres are grown and harvested before being spun, has made it crystal clear. Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for one of the clearest tutorials I have ever seen. I learnt to spin this way 50+ years ago and now use a wheel (that took me many, many more years to master). Recently I was trying to show someone how to use a drop spindle but had a complete brain freeze how to start. I think now (in hindsight) that one of my problems is that when I learnt all those years ago I was taught on a bottom whorl spindle whereas the one I bought but hadn't yet used is a top whorl and I couldn't work out a logical thread path to get started. Now I have seen this tutorial, it is all so easy to understand.

I learnt just now that I can do it much faster and better quality in varieties of thickness when I prepare the slices of the wool before - thick as I want to make a wool. When I want to me thicker, it is bigger slice so I can control it much better by the spinning itself! Thank you for showing! By the way, you looks very pretty!

Thank you! I'm an archaeologist and while analyzing ceramic sherds, found 1/2 of a small ceramic disk with a center hole. Too small to be a chunkey stone, I thought it may be a spindle whorl. Later while rebagging it I noticed 2 round raised bumps (called buttons as a ceramic decoration element) on the exterior curved edge. I never knew how spinning actually worked, but your video showed me that maybe those 2 buttons serve the purpose of the notch in your wooden spindle whorl!! Very exciting! I hope to try spinning some day-looks like fun!

Your video is the best explanation on spinning that I have found. I watched a handful of videos before yours and was not going to give up but resigned myself to knowing that I will probably never have pretty hand spun yarn lol. After watching this, it's going a lot smoother for me. None of the other videos showed the 'pinch, draft' part or explained how you would know when to stop spinning. I was spinning to infinity and beyond. Needless to say, I was having a lot of troubles. So thanks, you're cool 😘 🤗🤓

Megan. ..you are ADORABLE! Your video was very fun and informative. I enjoyed it very much and I think it's an excellent beginning and introduction to you and what you do so well. You make an excellent teacher and the step by step of spinning and parking (love that) was simple and straight forward. Looking forward to future videos! !! :D
