Basic Fantasy is easy to remember all the rules for, so it leaves a lot more room for actual role-play. But your players have to be comfortable with that freedom. I think a lot of modern players have become dependent on pre-set list of "Skills" and level-based "Features and Traits" to give them powers, rather than consider original solutions based on their own imagination.

I agree with your assessment. A lot of my idea of using 5e as an OSR platform was in stripping out all the super powers (as I like to call the fluff), or more accurately, simply ignoring them. Thank you for the comment.

This is by far my favorite OSR.

I can see why. It has a lot going for it. Thank you for commenting.

4:48 taking all the BF RPG modules and meshing the adventures into a single sandboxed world, Um, yes please!

Right? I think that would be fun too. Thank you for commenting.

That really is a great idea! *wheels begin turning*

An update on this, I’ve read through all the anthology adventures and made a flow chart based on suggested level for an open table sandbox. There’ll need to be a town, a forest, a lake with a large island, foothills, mountains, and a desert beyond. I’ve also dropped in a pocket of the world known to have time distortions across the eons to include the CS series and their ever-changing denizens.

Free is nice (duh :) ). The hardcover is NOT expensive though. Best thing about Basic, is how well presented it is. So many OSR choices, and Basic likely is one of the best examples of great editing and organization.

I play solo so I love the price point for hardcopy BF. You can get everything in for less than the cost of 5E. Sometimes I will throw in a liitle White Box as well.

@araworn2141 The price is really hard to beat, isn't it? Thank you for the comment.

I really, really, like that drawing on the first page of that Adventure Anthology 1 for some strange reason....

5E is the same as OSR? That sounds like a fun video! It all depends on the DM & the group you’re playing with I suppose.

If you like how inexpensive basic fantasy is, and are excited about all the stuff that you can get for a low price, why would you run your campaign in 5e that is the antithesis of what you're saying and promoting? But, it is YOUR game, I say, pick the system that you would find most fun! 😊

I only meant I might use the Creative Commons version of of 5e as a basis for an OSR style game. The reason being that so many people already have tons of books for the system (myself included). I have all the PF Bestiaries and tons of other monster books. Not to mention all the online stuff available. That is my thinking anyway. Thank you for the comment and asking me that.

In my opinion, you can't build an OSR game from any basis that is compatible with 5E supplements. They're just to different.

If you like something, why you should change sommething? If I understand right, it is You who is The GameMaster.

Very cool game i believe its an update on ADnD but nit sure. Got myself a hardcopy last month.

It's an open source retro-clone of 1981 Moldvay-Cook Basic & Expert D&D, but it can easily be scaled up to AD&D with the free downloadable supplements on the website's Downloads page. More races, more classes, more options, more rules. Pick what you want, ignore what you don't.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've not heard of this. What advantages does it offer? Is it Creative Commons or something similar?
