Aikido Chuseikan

This video introduces all the basic (standard) aikido attacks that are encountered in our white belt test syllabus, and the footwork used to get off the line and blend with these attacks in a clear and consistent way.
The most important goal of this video is to show how different attacks can be met with the same footwork, and to help students gain a clear vision of the correct ura and omote angles for performing technique in a useful and consistent way.
The examples shown are currently how we want to see students at the Aikido Chuseikan dojo perform their techniques. They certainly aren't the only footwork variations or angles one can use to perform elegant aikido technique.

I have waited 33 years for this video, since Above The Law was released. This is senior data, the information back of formation. We need to establish our own Emmy awards.

Belated thanks to Guy and Don. I first viewed this video last year and almost immediately taped the "star" diagram to our mats. It has helped students tremendously to understand "the line" between partners and how to stay on it or get off of it.

Glad it was helpful! We as martial artists accrue so much "dogma" in our techniques and training, we hope it helps to re-approach things from a structural, "big picture" standpoint every now and then.

Very nice concept and view. Nice upload. Thank you. There is lots of great feed back with no constructive criticism. So here goes, a mistake I know but!! Using 7:15 to 7:27 struggle as an example, apply this info. E.g. cut all the way down, boken-cut, before stepping, tenkan. If you don’t make a full cut then take Uke’s centre before moving/stepping- tenkan. This is how you will be able use the vertical body weight to pin Uke. Stay/working centre to centre. There is “no way” this is centre to centre, any high grade can see this to be true. Use the cut as a cut not a handle. What is the difference between a cut and a handle? Face the direction that you are/will be going. I know you may not/don’t care but who cares - it can help some others aikido students to understand that Aidido does not need to be a struggle, a free flowing Aikido is possible. Many thanks. There are 5 important points/Aikido principles here.

it is great video training. i think first of all in aikido training of foot movements is the first thing. Because it must not stay in front of the uke, it must be far away from the angle of uke.

Question on your tape. What kind of tape did you use, and what did you use to clean the mat after taking it up?

Sorry we took so long to reply! Plain red duct tape from the hardware store. We pulled it up immediately after use, no residue!

I wish their was a voiceover narrator explaining what is happening because I am completely lost. I instinctively see what is happening but a narration would enhance this tutorial.

I love the movements and for form practice it is great. However no one in a confrontation is going to keep holding your wrist as you perform the movements. So learning the basic footwork I think is valid and the technique but as long as you know the form in all its part is just that. Form not technique. If you practice this you, will react like this outside the dojo and that will not end well. For me the end technique your trying to use is the most important. Form will always break down in a high stress environment.

This is the strength of Aikido. Moving offline of the attack. I spend a lot of time, moving in the Octagon. 8 directional line of movement. Left side right side equals 16 different line of movement. What one does on the right. One must do on the left. OSS!

Except for one, all black belts I have meet, when "teaching" a movement, they just show it once or twice, at normal speed, no verbal explanation, no step by step... and this video follows the same style. Why is that? Why do they "teach" like they actually don't want beginners learns? Genuine question (and sorry for bad English).
