This is very informative. I use D/2 exclusively to clean stones and tile mastic to bind undamaged headstones to their pedestals. I haven't repaired any broken stones yet, but I've been working with epoxy all my life. It looks like a smart fix. Thankfully I learned from your video NOT to spread the epoxy from end to end, but to use dots instead. Thanks!

I purchase Akepox 5010 two part epoxie from AtlasPreservation.com. good website with lots of info. it comes in two two tubes that are easy to open and close. think of an oversized toothpaste tube. its a 2-1 ratio, squeeze out a short line of the small tube and 2 lines the same length of the big tube , mix with a disposiable sonething like plastic knife and then apply dabs as in the viedo

Tip from Maine: I start digging up broken stones in spring, set them aside to dry and start working on them in mid-summer (or whenever they dry out). I use Granite Cement (construction-quality I get from a stone mason). I do the "dot and clamp" routine at first, then come back a week or so later (when the cement dries) and finish filling the cracks. Five years in and I have had no failures, re-breaks, streaking or any other issues. ALWAYS use clamps and ALWAYS let the cement dry. There's no rush - these people have been dead for 200 years or more - they'll wait!

It would be nice to know either the products used or where they can be purchased.

They used D2 for the cleaning which is pretty much the only cleaning thing you should do. From the picture it also looks like they used Akepox 5010 for the joints. www.stonetoolsupply.com/Akemi-AKEPOX-5010-2-25k-Unit-p/5010akepox.htm

What kind of material was used for the infill? Natural hydraulic lime? Historic pointing mortar?

Instead of epoxy, why can't the mortar filler be used as an adhesive? A monument engraver can put in a small channel or bore holes between the two broken pieces and the mortar filler be used as the adhesive.

seems like you could drill a few holes and put pins in the stone

I have tried this but run into alignment issues - broken stones are irregular and don't always line up. Plus, you need to use composite pins (not metal ) because metal pins expand and contract as well as rust over time and either crack the stone or fail. My opinion and experience is that we can make what repairs we can now but in time (25, 50, or 100 years) it will have to be redone, especially "soft" stones like sandstone or limestone. Granite and slate of best quality last the longest but then you have discoloration issues. D-2 takes care of that or just use water, a stiff plastic brush and let the sun work on it.

Huge potential to break old marble. That's why we don't use that method often unless you want a pile of dust.

Why was the headstone cleaned first. ??
@ohger1
@ohger1 Жыл бұрын
@@johnwquick3616 It wasn't cleaned first in order to proceed with the repair, it just coincidentally had been cleaned a short time before someone hit the stone with a mower.

When you said that if you have to leave the site someone may steal your clamps, I thought it's a sad commentary on the lack of conscience of some people today

Bodging stones up with no dowels is dangerous and irresponsible. Next time it breaks I hope there is not a child near it.
