Inspirational teaching from a true pro! You are THE FLUTE DOCTOR!

I have had three jazz flute teachers, none of whom explained the process or outlined the steps to get there as clearly as you have done in this short video. Still can't improvise but with your explanation, I feel hopeful and inspired. Even the Aebersold books don't explain the process all that well, perhaps complicating it more than necessary. The Aebersold tracks, however, are a great place to implement your "road-map". THANK YOU!!!!! p.s. -- using Jimmy Snidero and Lennie Niehaus books have helped with phrasing and articulation.

I really liked this video. Pretty intuitive stuff if you know chords. One thing you might want to consider is having a basic video on chord theory. If I didn't know chord theory I would not be able to follow what you're saying at all.

I am a full-time college professor. Because of that fact, I am forced to do most of my KZbin videos and related things like books, sheet music, etc during the summer. I have already begun the process and hope to have some new jazz videos/sheet music/ books, etc. in the near future. Thanks for asking! That was a great "prompter" to get moving on those projects! Dr. DavidandJudiklee, that was an excellent tutorial on the intro to jazz. What Jamie Aebersold book would you suggest. Vol. 2 Nothing But the Blues or Vol. 1 How to Play Jazz and Improvise or Blues in All Keys? I know my major, minor, aug, and dim triads in all 12 keys AND the extended notes like the 7th and 9th. Dominate 7th is flat for jazz...dorian minor is flat 3 and flat 7th. So, which book in the Aebersold series would help best facility the exercises you are talking about?
@ronj944811 жыл бұрын
I'd start with 1. But you might want to check out: 100 Ultimate Jazz Riffs For Flute: Andrew D. Gordon. It has a CD. The riffs are the "vocabulary" of improv. Hope this helps.

What model e brand of flute for jazz music?
@davidklee11632 жыл бұрын
There are jazz flutists out there that play flutes across the spectrum of models. Some play the Haynes flute, another playes the Pearl flute, and yet others play on the Altus, and Yamaha flutes. I currently play on a Powell handmade conservatory 9K Aurumite flute. It is not so much the flute as it is the flutist! Great question! Take care! David

I really have no idea what you are talking about. It would be great if you made a video explaining what a triad and a chord is. My flute book makes no mention of these terms. It teaches me the fingerings and has exercises. I would love to start trying to pay jazzy things, but the book has nothing in it to help me.
@adamcenturione86316 жыл бұрын
you really just need to work through a rudimentary theory text from purchased at a music store. It will take about 2 months.
@Adela.Buendia6 жыл бұрын
A basic chord is made by playing three musical notes at the same time, that´s what you call triad. This notes are called: 1- the "tonic" which is the note that gives the chords name, we could say it´s the most important; 2- the "third" which determines if that is a major or minor chord and 3- the "fifth". For example, for the C chord you have to play three notes: C (the tonic), E (the third if you count C as the first) and G (the fifht of you count C as the first). In the flute you can´t play chords bc the instrument do not allow you to play more that one musical note at the same time, it´s a melodic instrument. Other instruments such as piano or guitar are harmonic instruments so you can play chords. However, you don´t really have to study a theory text for improvise. Improvising is about playing and paying attention. If you listen and pay attention you´ll be able to improvise, with practice. Theory is just a tool you can use, but is not essential. Btw sorry if i´m not so clear, English is not my mother tongue and i´m translating musical terms as I can.

How does your flute make the wavy sound in a note?
@DrDavidandJudiKlee6 жыл бұрын
That is called vibrato. It is produced the same way a vocalist produces vibrato. All professional flutists must have it. I have another flute educational video that discusses how to produce it. Good luck. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2eXk2abesalnZo

Hi there! Thank you for the instructional video and it really helped me comprehend the methods of Jazz for flute. I played the flute and piccolo from middle school thru out high school, and I was in concert band and marching band and it was all I did back then. After high school I decided to put the flute down and see the world and try different things. Fast forward 15 years, recently I want to pick up the flute again and started practicing (I suck so bad though), and I will be checking out more of your videos for sure. What advice would you have for someone who was used to closed hole flute going to open hole flute?
