It's interesting to see the link lights go out when you disable the adapter. I hadn't thought of it like that before. Also I use the speed lights regularly for information on my d-link consumer Gb switches for 10/100 vs 1000 speed. I try to keep up with labeling cables but if not and the light is slower it can help me figure out what it is connected to. About the link lights and the damaged cable...did you consider which pair you damaged when you did it? 10/100 only uses two pair wires, and not the blue which it looks like you did, so you could have a bad wire and the cable still works, yes? Though it looks like both devices are newer which support Gb. Try the cable on an older device with 100Mb ethernet and see if it works. I'd like to see that. Then if used on a Gb device which uses all four pairs it would not work. A cable tester, cheap enough if you have the wired home most have, is the way to go. I believe you used one at least once in one of your videos. ;-0 I'm not picking, honest...thinking out loud more like it. I knew signals on 1,2,3,6 were used but your video prompted me to dig a bit and I learned that is only for the 10/100, and that four pair is used for higher speeds. Very cool. A day isn't complete if I don't learn something new.

Excellent commentary. Yeah, in this video example, I deliberately cut the White/Green (I was assuming a 10/100 connection because that laptop's nic was a 10/100). but, you do make some interesting points. Thanks for your contribution to the conversation. :-)

On my Computer I have an Ethernet connected. There is one amber light blinking just as the video showed on the laptop. The other light however is a solid red for me and not green, most likely indicating an issue I assume. Now its not a problem with my desktop I don't think but it could be the Ethernet cable I'm using. I went to a friend's house and used their cable and the red light was now green. But now I'm back at my place with the same static red light. I tried other cables. Is this an issue? I would appreciate input. Thanks!

For a Netgear Gigabit switch if a port goes to a PC w/100mb NIC and another switch port goes to the ISP modem that is 1000, will the switch port to modem show 1000 or 100?

One of the ports have no light and another has an orange flickering light. No matter where I move that cable with the flickering the port will flicker orange. So is this cable going bad?

No videos explain what the issue with a switch only lighting the incoming signal but not on any connected device. This occurs regardless of which port the internet is coming into. I’ve used each cable on direct connection to individual devices with no problem. I have my internet coming to the switch, but no lights will come on for the port to ps5, switch, or ps4

Sebastiano, all equipment manufacturers have different lights so it’s hard to say what is normal 🤔

@@NetworkAdvisor I`m , just a little confused. First time I made my own JR45 cable insert it in the port only one green blinking light . I checked the wire with a cable tester and it shows that it's OK. I insert a complete JR45 cable purchased from store, insert it into the port and they are 2 green blinking lights. I called the technical support of Bell Canada and he said that he doesn't know what it means. I am a little confused what am I doing wrong.

Hmm, so the cable you made test ok. Can you try using that you made between two devices you know are working ok? This would prove if the cable works or not. I have seen situations where a cable I have made will pass the tester, but not actually work between two Ethernet devices. Maybe a problem with resistance. I wish you luck.

Few things: Ethernet cord is bad? Network card (or usb adapter) is bad or driver is misconfigured? Network port on the router could be disabled? Might try plug another device in see it it still happens.

You can try checking the Ethernet adapter in device settings to see maybe if it has become “disabled “. If so, you can right-click to re-enable. Or, the network driver needs to be updated?

Okay, so my LED light was lit, but for some reason the network connection was down and the troubleshooter told me to check the ethernet cable. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. I no longer have any LED lights and I no longer can connect to the internet using that device. I was hoping this video would explain what to check for, and it sounded like you were mentioning something about drivers and ports, yet you gave no explanation on how to check these and ensure they were properly working. Pretty frustrating.

I have plugged one cable cat 5E to my switch and it gets 1000mbps speed but the other two are getting only 100mbps do you know possible fix because on my pc I only get to download 100mbps and I want the 600 Mbps but my switch is not pushing it my switch is DLink DGS-105

If the power LED on your Cisco 4300 router flashes amber every 8 seconds, and i don't hear the fan running, and the power cord is working. any idea?

Sounds like it needs to be looked at. I would probably hook at console cable up to it and watch the boot up sequence. If it's not making it past the POST processes, then it needs attention.

depending on the switch brand, the light colors can mean any number of things. In this video, the switch is a Cisco. Orange means either of two things (but maybe more). 1. the switch port is negotiating the port speed. 2. the switch port has settled on 10mbps as the connection speed. Not sure that addressed your comment, but the best I could do with limited info. Good luck out there. :-)

Unfortunately, all the different network equipment manufacturers use different light and color conventions for meaning.(green, red, Amber, white). So, it's really hard for me to give you any guidance there. Good luck with that.

Maybe it's the PC (and not the wire or faceplate problem). one thing you an do is try connecting a working PC to the cable where the broken pc is to see if the problem is from the wall plate (the network outlet).

If you’re sure the Ethernet cable is good, you could try doing some swapping to try to isolate the issue. For instance if you use a diff computer does the light come on? The other possibility is that the computer network card could be disabled (see windows network settings)

If you can locate the network adapter in network settings, you usually just right click the icon and choose “enable. “

Just a guess, but have you tried testing your pc ethernet port? I guess the light wouldn't turn on if something is wrong there

@@fauxyfn8449 right click on the Internet sign and then on the search for problem tab, I don't know what its called in english. But Windows found the problem for me and I had to activate something with administration again. Sorry for the bad English, I hope this helps you in a way. 😂😂

The Link lights are not glowing in both sides, motherboard and the Modem. It works fine with my laptop, but my motherboard, i just tried to insert my graphic card and there were some BSODs and Orange SODs. Now my LAN lights are not glowing.

It got solved accidentally. I was trying to change the OS and this problem somehow got solved. I guess resetting the BIOS settings to default should have been the key
