With your graphics and explanation you gave more useable information to new muzzleloader shooters in just a few minutes than they could obtain by viewing hours of other videos. Many thanks!!

Your technical videos are pretty good, Brian. Those new to muzzleloading will benefit from your explanation.

Excellent video. I especially learned about the pros of using a bit thicker patch. Great content. Thank you for the effort.

Short and simple!I have been wanting to retry .10 in my .50 cal, Green mountain barrel.Wasnt sure if it was with the time but maybe it would be a good combo with the .490.

I'm finding myself moving from tighter patch/ball combos to more easier to load combos. Like .490 or .530, .350 and .010 patches and finding accuracy is not only as good but loading is much easier. But every rifle is a law unto itself. I also use patches with my smoothbore. Historical or not my results are better.

I’ve been saving all my patches I do not see where the black extends to the edge however mine are quite a bit more tattered - could you show us a bad patch ? Thanks for sharing!

Burn throughs or cuts indicate issues. Burn throughs can usually be fixed by 1) thicker patch or 2) more lube. Cuts mean there is a sharp spot in the bore somewhere, usually the muzzle. You can carefully polish or just shoot it to where it wears smooth. As long as accuracy isn't affected there really is no harm.

A good patch will look toasted on the powder side. Literally like a nicely toasted piece of bread. There can be black as well from fouling but the main thing is that there's no holes even if they're small. A tattered outside edge is normal and shouldn't be anything to worry about. As long as the ring left from where the patch contacted the barrel isn't "broken" it means you have a good gas seal.

@@FokkerAce1917the seal is what I was always worried about. My .58 rice barrel is actually .60 on the out side of the grooves. What I can tell. So I figured I needed to make a combo to get up to that .60. But .562 ball and .020 patch seem to work nicely. The .570/ .015 would have tears around the ball. Scrubbed with scratch rite. Still did it. Thick patch is fine for me.

@diamondmetalworks13 my rice 58 I use a .562 with .015, .020 works too but it loads harder.
