Another lovely video that I totally enjoyed watching. What I found fascinating about the Okinawan Goju Ryu system is that the older schools may emphasize different things, but what they don't emphasize still exist within their system in a latent format, if not in the kata, then it's in the bunkai, the kihon or the kakie etc - so that even though there're minor outward differences in the kata, the inner core remains closely similar between the few main schools. Your videos always cover the core/orthodox aspects of Goju-ryu in a very comprehensive manner not just of the OGKK/Jundokan system (that you're from), but of the other schools too (which I shall not mention). I've seen 2 general bunkai for the punch to the head bit, the breaking free from a rear grab, which is what you showed here nicely, and then defence of a frontal hug, whereby one arm drags him down, the other punches upwards into the chin at really close quarters. I was pleased that you mentioned the kick, followed by an elbow strike, using the body weight and forward momentum to drive the elbow in/up/down. This is one of the unique aspects of Kanryo Higaonna's karate (Shuri-te does it a diiferent way, a kick, followed by a elbow strike with a slap using the other hand) that he drives the elbow in after the kick. (It was one of the things I tried to look for, some years ago, in Chinese martial-arts to try to identify the style of Ryu Ryu Ko, and it's NOT present in some styles that claim to be part of Goju-Ryu's ancestry....) This elbow strike isn't followed by an uraken in Shisochin or Sanseru, according to my Sensei, because it used to be a hidden move, but Chojun Miyagi Sensei made the uraken an overt move in the Gekisai katas because those kata were designed for beginners and he wanted them to know that the elbow could be followed by a Uraken (or in this case a nukite) or a groin strike. The elbow lock (9:35) in Shisochin, if resisted, or if you find that the relative body positions don't allow the move to be executed as intended, may be followed by a groin-strike slipping under the opponent's arm instead (like in Gekisai) - (I first saw Koshin Iha Sensei demonstrate this a long time ago and it stuck in my mind with him doing it, ever since). In circa 19:18- 19:30 you showed Bunkai of a horizontal parry/block followed by an elbow attack.... (We usually do a suppression (press down) instead of a block, I was thinking to myself) then you blocked, and then indeed you suppressed his hand and executed the elbow-strike. You didn't emphasize the suppression in the verbal explanation, but you did it. Again you showed the suppression followed by the uraken in the next bunkai (21: 50) although if you were closer I bet you'd convert it into an elbow strike like in 19:18-19:30..... (an upper-cut, uraken,elbow-strike, groin strike, all possible after a kick, I'm reminded of Seisan) . The final closing movement you ended with the little circular move, and said it was so neglected by many.....yes, and it's the way all our kata close (in my school that is) with a deliberate over-emphasis plus its own bunkai too. I could go on all day about the details in your video that are so to the point of what Goju-Ryu is, but that would be hogging the comments section. Nice work!

Lovely breakdown of bunkai for Shisochin kata.This bunkai demonstrates explosive movements (flowing out with power). It emphasises joint manipulation and locking techniques with breaks which are features of Shisochin Kata. Shisochin kata was one of Chojun Miyagi's favourite kata in his later years.

Sensei, might I ask about the kick before the elbow strike. Is it acceptable if we somehow cannot reach the groin with the kick that we kick the knee instead? Because the reaction that we want is for the opponent to bend his body forward, right? Note: I am, by all means, not a martial artist. But, I am interested in understanding the body mechanics of it. Thank you in advanced.

Shisochin for shodan? Isn't it too early to grade a black belt at this step? :)
@GojuRyuKarateCentre3 жыл бұрын
Hello! In our school it is the grading kata for shodan, then sanseru for Ni dan, etc etc. But it differs from school to school, federation to federation! Where does it feature for you? 🙇🏻♀️

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre : it seems we are both from the same family here (my sensei is Bob Honiball and you might met him with other bunch of guys like Tony Green and the Liverpudlians). :) So before Jundokan split to So Honbu and Kyokai, shisochin was for kyu grades (as I had to perform it for the 3 kyu, if I still remember correctly). Sanseru follows after shisochin and is for the 1 kyu only, and then sanchin dai ni for the shodan and seipai for the nidan. That's why I wonder when it was downgraded to shisochin being for shodan (have some kyu certificates with OGKK emblem as yours, too). Maybe I should switch back to your federation to get some much higher dan even still need to master seipai? (wink-wink). ;)

Ah, very interesting! So for us, Sanchin at every black belt grading, plus grading kata and presenting a togui (favourite) kata to the panel, as well as an extra kata chosen by the panel. And this is after a grueling month of tests!
