I am a dancer, first and foremost, not just a ballroom dancer. I am prepared to do anything: International, Smooth, Rythm, Jazz, Argentine, Contemporary. If you can teach me, I want to do it. I have my preferences but everyone does. I am not gonna ever say one dance is better than the other. It is not just insulting a dance, it's insulting an entire culture of people who invented and love International Ballroom.

These moves are basic relative to the advanced moves high level dancers showcase in competitions. The moves in the video are what amateur ballroom competitors would use in competition.

If someone looks beyond the stylized and fluid linking of these professional competition level dancers, most of the steps are basic steps it is just they do not close after each step, they tend to do more open steps. I dance many of these steps as a social ballroom dancer, but I am far from looking good as them.

Actually, this is known as International or Standard Tango, derived from Argentine Tango. It was not designed to be insulting, it is simply a different style. No need to be so obtuse.

For those of you confused about the difference between Argentine Tango and Ballroom Tango. This is definitely not the same dance as Argentine tango which it was derived from. It travels much more, frame and head positions are very different. There is very little leg flicking action and instead head flicking action to create sharpness. It should be called “Ballroom Tango” as it has been adapted to be a ballroom dance as Argentine tango is a social dance and not fit for a ballroom competition floor. It should keep the name tango though to pay respect to the dance it was derived from.

I know that I will get at lot of bad response for this coment from the Argentine Tango-fans - but I just saw an Argentine Tango and it is very nice, but I personally like the International Tango the most. It's more strickt, more elegant - I probarly think that because that's what I have learned to dance. The Argentine Tango is also very interesting, and the two types of Tango is deffenetly - in my head - equals :)

@bocaknights1 These professional dancers, many times World Champions, run perfectly with the exact timing of musical techniques. Who does not know and appreciate more than the slow replays of the Argentine tango dancers and its curved, elderly, obese and discharged, or basic beginners standard dances, can not understand what is looking, of course. And now it is clear that those who can not and does not understand what he's seeing, not knowing anything else, and says critics to find it ugly.

Foul language shows a lack of sofistication, which is amplified by the criticism made of this video. This is International Tango at it's best, like it or not. They make it look effortless, you can't dance like that without talent, determination, and years of practice. Well done

I never said it wasn't executed brilliantly. I think the point (which has also been made by others) is that the impression shouldn't be given that this is "basic". People who might otherwise be inclined towards taking up the tango could watch this clip and think, "OMG, if that's basic, I would have no chance, so I won't bother!".

Actually, believe it or not, some videos giving lessons on how to Tango say that looking away like that is somewhat romantic XD and even though they hardly look at each other, it is still romantic. It's as if both have one mind, one body, and one soul. They move together smoothly, and effortlessly.

@Quequa1000 I was not trying to discredit their talent. I was asking a legitimate question about the timing, as dance is suppose to obey rules. I was asking this question to anyone qualified to answer. I don't understand most of your response, as it doesn't make sense in English and seems to be a bunch of disjointed thoughts thrown together. I am a dancer and was expressing my opinion about this level of dance and performance and how for me personally it isn't attractive.

There are other KZbin clips in which "basic" is applied in a cryptically technical sense that might be understood by dance professionals but is bound to be misunderstood by ordinary viewers. I think that those who are posting these clips are altogether forgetting that KZbin is an open public medium and not one in which misleading euphemisms are appropriate. Let's all agree that "basic" means precisely what the dictionary defines it as meaning, on which basis this definitely ain't basic!

Yes, Mirko seems delayed in the first 42 seconds, not in beat with 8-counts. But he did it like it's a show dance. Later he realized this is a teaching basic routing and went back into the 8-count timing. Pino did a basic tango video with the perfect 8-count timing, easier to follow, it's on KZbin.

You're absolutely right and it's a real shame, since the oher clips in this series are excellent. When it came to the tango, though, I think Mirko and Alessia rather lost the plot and drifted off into something more akin to a competitive routine. Watch a clip entitled "Hilton basic tango", featuring Marcus and Karen Hilton, and you'll see how Mirko and Alessia should have gone about this. Why oh why doesn't the dance world jettison that bloody expression "basic"?

I like this song... What is the name of it?
@Aola1181
@Aola1181 13 жыл бұрын
@bocaknights1 What Mirko does in the clip can loosely be called as "lagging behind the rhythm". In essence, he is delaying foot placement: instead of stepping exactly on-beat, he steps on the backbeat, or off-beats. For example, a slow-quick-quick -sequence would change from a "step-wait-step-step" (4 beats in total) into a "steeeeee-ep-step-step" (same 4 beats). You place the foot down (and transfer weight) of the slow step on the second beat instead of the first. Hopefully this makes sense.

Its just the open finish actions that are danced rubato and legato, which is a very common interpretation. Anything else is very clear on time
@Aola1181
@Aola1181 Жыл бұрын
Wow, 11 years apart, brings back memories. Anyhow, I'd say the closed promenade at 0:09 is not quite "on time", and the same goes for the first viennese cross at 0:47. Technique of moving the feet is clearly staccato, as is common in ballroom tango. Maybe a bit "less staccato" than you'd see these days but quite far away from "legato" like it's used in other standard dances. But, these are opionated things. One man's artistic freedom is other's breach of rhythm =)

@bocaknights1 I'm Italian and I use the automatic translator of google, that translates badly.

Ah but Argentine tango can be danced in almost any bar with a dance hall, with other people that are or are not that skilled. You cam meet people, dance with people show off how beautiful your wife or lady friend is; move to almost any genre of music without pretense. Argentine tango is social and you get to improvise.

Could someone tell me what the timing is in Tango or any Ballroom when it gets to this level (Gold). To me the Bronze, or Silver version of dances are better, because they keep the same tempo, this doesn't seem to go with the music and looks like they can do whatever, whenever they want. I also think that that there is a jerkiness and stiffness in these type of professional Ballroom Performances and the makeup and costumes can look like paint and feathers. It looks like they are in pain.

Oh I see. And there was I imagining that KZbin was a public media aimed not only at entertaining and informing but also at providing technos in all manner of fields with the opportunity to attract newcomers to their activities. Had I realised that it was actually reserved for pompous, exclusionists such as yourself, I would have refrained from proferring my humble, ill-educated opinion (doffs his cap). I'm sure those at the offices of the Oxford English Dictionary will be equally contrite.

You need to look up the word 'basic'.
@Czerniakowska
@Czerniakowska 14 жыл бұрын
On a public media forum, in this case KZbin, people would expect the word 'basic' to mean what it in fact means, i.e., basic. Those who insist on uploading material which is far from 'basic' under that banner are doing themselves and dance in general no favours whatever. Again, I think your best course is to resort to the Oxford English Dictionary. You're probably confusing the words 'basic' and 'convoluted'.

@lace1990 Really? Are you sure they're not very very very basic, or perhaps even very very very very basic? Excessive use of superlatives often (or even very very very very very often) has the effect of detracting from, rather than supporting, the merits of a statement, as admirably illustrated by your post. You could just have written 'I consider myself to be brilliant at dancing the tango' and we would have understood what you were saying. Have a nice life.

I admit it´s nice, but since I started dancing Tango Argentino three years ago, ballroom tango just can´t satisfy me. It lacks the essence of the dance, that is so magical about arg. tango. The cultural background, the spontaneity, emphasis on the basic fact, that the dance is actually about two people moving together as one, enjoying the music. So, this seems just artifficial to me, sorry :-) no offense

First, I prefer to dance Arg. Tango. But, you are comparing different levels of dancing. One cannot do show-level Arg. dancing (Larici/Barrionuevo) with just anyone at a milonga -- you don't get to meet people and improvise with that. These two are some of the best Int. style dancers in the world; they are show level dancers. As a social dancer, I can do exactly what you say but with Int. style tango. BTW, I believe they are improvising in this vid. This is not close to their show routine.

It should not be called tango, as it is not tango. The only tango is that that was born naturally, as music and dance, from the expression of different cultures over many decades in Argentina. This dance looks artificial, like it is made up, not something that was manifested naturally.. Give it another name. ¡Que boludos!
