Basic Transposition for Trumpet

Thank you, my trumpet teacher wants to get me started on learning to transpose to Bb trumpet for my AMEB exams, I'm doing Grade 3 this year and theory and sight reading are my biggest hurdles at the moment but practice makes perfect. Well, my biggest hurdle is playing in front of people but I'm working on that one slowly....lol. Thanks again.

So are you saying that if I want to play a piano music piece on trumpet, I have to play 2M higher on piano scale for trumpet? For example, piano music piece is A major scale, trumpet would be B major scale? Please I need some clarification, thank you.

That is correct, if you are playing on a B-flat trumpet!

I can understand a majority of this i guess but what im really confused with is how am i supposed to figure out which flats to remove or which sharps to add.

Thank god for transposition, otherwise we would have one too many ledger lines on the bottom! OMG, transposition is so stupid... I was trying to play (guitar) along to a notation video of Chet Baker's Autumn Leaves. The original recording is in F minor. But video says Chet Baker (Bb) Autumn Leaves. So Bb major,.or Bb minor??? The video plays...notation is A minor! Okay A minor it is then...wait. The audio is G minor! It took me for ever to figure out that it for Bb trumpet, mean I had to transpose down a step! Why can't everything be written in concert pitch? Maybe with 8va's or different clefs up or down a fifth at most. But no, cause...reasons...

So, in other words, as long as the composer knows what he's doing, play what you're reading because it matches the fingering...

unless you're playing a different type of trumpet (C, D, Eb, A piccolo) or you are reading old german music (might be written in C, D, or F... if you're lucky! E-natural if you're very unlucky and ended up playing Englebert Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel) or Brass Band Soprano Cornet music (Eb)
