I know that the HP sauce is missing from my videos i agree a sandwich with HP is good. The reason the troops used it was because all the food tasted the same. I used to cook for the military for many years and a huge pan of all in stew can easily burn slightly and HP takes the burn taste out.

It's really interesting watching these different channels, preparing these rations. It gives yoy a better idea of they actually ate. When I used to reenact Civil War and Great War, it gave me a chance to experience it under mostly field conditions, using some original equipment, mess kits, spoons, canteen cups, etc. I'm glad, I had the chance to do it, when I did? This really takes me back.

HP Sauce eventually replaced by including Chilli Sauce in the British Army ration packs to "enhance" flavours. Hard Tack evolved into Biscuits Brown in the Rat packs.

I love your interest in reacting what soldiers went thru. In there culinary situation. Mate. Hp only thing missing. My great-grandfather. Was n France during World War 1 and I had the luxury of knowing him. Till I was 13. He lived to be a 103. And I remember stories and talking about cooking bully beef in veggies. And the trenches and all the horrors they went through. I really wish I'd have been older and then pick his brain more

How can it be authentic when the biscuit was baked " a couple of days ago" ? . Troops in WW1 suspected their biscuits were left overs from the Boer war... I can't help but wonder how many rifle butts were split breaking those things up...

Have to say that cooking with that type of mess tin, shallow and wide, more like a frying pan than a pot, has got to be one of the most fuel inefficient ways of preparing a meal. :/ Wonder how many lives could have been saved by proper nutrition if they'd issued pot-type, rather than clamshell-type mess tins?
@YorkshireTrench

Well, that's the exact Mess tin we were issued during basic training in the British Army in the 80's. You get two and if you want to keep the heat in you put one on top of the other as a lid. Works fine.

The design is more for going through a mess line. But unlike the U.S. mess kit these are actually useful for cooking. I'm sure that if possible soldiers would use a better vessel. But this is what they were issued. And a mug.

Firstly your hardtack is way under cooked. You should not be able to break it with your hands. It will go off in a matter of weeks. Secondly all these trench recipes are bollocks for the consumption of the dears back home. Breakfast in the trenches if you're lucky, 4 biscuits of hardtack softened in water with a can of corn beef. Shared between 2. Dinner, repeat.
