Stop Your Horse Pulling On The Reins

In this video I show you how to stop your horse pulling on the reins. This actually starts on the ground and your horse understanding what he is supposed to do with the rein. In horse training when we have "problems" with our horses it is usually caused by horses not understanding what we want from them. We should always go back to the beginning to look for any holes or misunderstandings in their training. There is nothing wrong with going back to groundwork to help the horse with his understanding. If your horse is pulling the reins out of your hands this video will help.

I haven't even finished the video yet but I just want to say that you do such a great job of explaining things like carrying your hands - it was only recently that I learned what that actually meant and felt like and after four years of riding I'm only now starting to understand how to get a horse on the bit. Your videos are really great at reinforcing how to understand the things that I've been learning - and how to explain them to someone else! Thank you!

I almost wasn't going to watch this video. I haven't backed my young horse yet. I now see how important it is on the ground first. Although I can't practice under saddle much due to my other horse having arthritis I can practice a lot of things at the walk with him to prepare better for my young horse. Thank you so much. I agree 100% with everything you teach.

Great fundamental basics that are the building blocks of training a horse. I see so many horses come back from trainers that do not have this groundwork foundation. Good on you, beat video.

The basics of all riding starts on the ground. It is here you teach the horse what you want him to do. If you don't understand this you will never train your horse in a kind and compassionate way.

Yoi're very good Josie! Agreed with all this! Perfectly understood & perfectly depicted. My mare is not accepting of the bridle, this issue has arisen after riding bitless for some tiime, time off, change in location & begining to aspire to dressage at this later start in our riding. Thus i'm back to groundwork. Believe she needs - essentially - a re-start!! I like yr tips, & notice from following you, you train successfully & comprehensively. Really admire yr work & approach! Kudos to you & thankyou ❤

Hi Josie I haven't had a horse for a very long time. I tried a riding school, but it just wasn't the same. I like that horse/human connection. So I've decided to save all my money and buy a horse. I will be 58 in a couple of days. I'm planning on saving for 12 months of agistment and 12 or so lessons before purchasing a horse. I'd love some tips on buying a horse, choosing the best age breed, etc, as well as some choosing agistment places.🐴

Are those spurs needed however if you use light hands? because light feet are a thing too
@seneynah
@seneynah 2 ай бұрын
Spurs drive the horse into the bit. Only used for that and stay quiet unless you need a driving or lateral cue. If you can’t stay light like that and know how to use spurs don’t use them! Spurs make a horse light in the side it’s like a bit for the leg.

Could you please give me advice? My horse bends nicely on the rope or on the reins when I ride. But she will initially - at training start - try to really pull away. I am currently pull, release, pull, release, wait. After 5-10 min we are ok. At one point I kept just a continues pressure, which ended in a pulling match - as in useless. Would you have a different approach? I really don't like our initial disagreement. BTW she is a 3 year old mustang - 2 months with me. Thanks
@seneynah

Start laterally as she shows side to side, giving with two reins comes later and often needs leg to push the horse into the bit to give.
