I really like how you add in when you've made a little mistake. It helps to see that even a professional can make mistakes and that mistakes aren't the end of the world.

Lovely advice! I will try this with this standardbred gelding I'm leasing, he's rather pushy and not mindful of humans at all.

Hi Josie, I love your training philosophy and the way you explain the concepts you use! I would love to see a video on how to teach your horse to wait for a forward aid after you've mounted, rather than just walking off. Thank you for your wonderful content :)

Hello. Thank you for sharing all these tips. Very useful. Would you make a VDO about how to deal with the horses if they try to bite/nip you while putting a girth on or while brushing them please? 😊

Hey Josie, how would you go about this in the pasture before you’ve got a halter on them? I want to say hi to my horse but he also crowds me. Also curious if you could make a video on nipping and how to correct it?

I would still move him out of my space if he pushed on me. I would probably use my body language but if I needed to take a rope or whip with me in the beginning I would. Horses should always be respectful of our space and we should approach them with respect as well. When it comes to nipping you can use you hands in a "karate chop" manner when ever his mouth comes near you. You are not aiming for him just keep the motion in your space and if he gets a "bop" in the nose that's his problem for invading your space.

How would you go about this for nervous and excitable horses. I have a young one who can be very pushy in the paddock but easily flighty when a rope or whip comes into play. (He is slowly getting desensitised but I find it’s different compared to working in a round yard or arena to a paddock/field). Love the videos btw!

There is a move called "creating a fence," where you hold the lead line between your stretched hands and raise it up. A horse perceives this as a barrier, not as a rope. That is a passive way to establish your space in the turnout or pasture if a flighty horse crowds you.

My 3 year old is a nightmare with personal space. Like he has no awareness for me or the other horses he goes out with. He will legit go over to the grumpiest of mares, who repeatedly has told him not to come closer, and just do it anyways. He will be right up in her personal space when she is rolling and once got a hoof in the face for it. 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀ I will most certainly try this, because I have run out of ideas of how to do this in the best possible way, and might actually get a professional out soon. But I want to try this method and see if that helps, because he always has to have his face right near my face or my hands, because he wants treats, even though I do not give him any. 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀

My horse isn’t scared of the rope, when he walks in my space I use the rope but he’s not scared. What should I do?
@caobita
@caobita Жыл бұрын
And he shouldn't be scared of the rope. If he doesn't move out of your space when you swing the rope, it's probably because he doesn't understand that it means that you want him to get out of your personal space

I’m very late to this, but would these same methods work on a mini horse? I’m volunteering at a barn with a very pushy mini mare, and they’re trying to fix it before they adopt her out. She has no respect for personal space whatsoever, and even if you stand a little in front of her, she throws a fit and tries the shove past you.

It should definitely work. A horse is a horse no matter what the size. If she is really pushy you might need to use a fair bit of energy to get her out of your space. Just be assertive not aggressive ☺️

Hello Josie, my horse pushes me on the back with his head when I lead him by the rein to the arena. He is behind me, and I have no lead rope in hand. What should I do to stop him doing this? Btw this seems a friendly thing of him, and doesnt do this after lesson when we go to the pasture.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining Жыл бұрын
I would do one of two things. I would make him walk further behind me where he couldn't reach me or I would bring him up to my shoulder and correct him there. I don't let my horses rub on me with their heads anytime. I will rub them but they are not allowed to rub on me.

Horses that push with their heads really can HURT, and is my pet hate. These are great exercises. Can’t tell you how often I’ve been asked to hold a horse while their owner walks a course or something and have been nailed by their head 😣
