Chhau dance originated from eastern part of India. This dance form is the first performing art which travelled globally. Chhau is a blend of Folk, Tribal and Martial art. Chhau is derived from Sanskrit word Chaaya meaning shadow or mask. Also Chhau is defined by few learned people to be derived from Chhauni (military Camp) in Odhisha. The Chhau has three different types originating from three different regions. Every type has its own unique features, pattern and style of ornamentation.
The revival, recognition of this art form is done recently
.In 2010 Chhau was listed in the UNESCO's representative list of The INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY. In India Sangeet Natak Akademi established a National Centre for Chhau Dance at Baripada Odhisha
