I am Canadian and about pronouncing the Latin names. It might help Americans to understand pronunciation of words in the English language. To understand the 'root' of words and their origins. Now, having said that you pronounce the word as it is spelled. Basically there are no silent letters. Remember not everyone pronounces the Latin names the same and no one beats another up on their pronunciation, usually people who know their Latin will know what species of plant you are speaking about. So relax and just start reading Latin names out loud when reading your text books. This helps and gives you confidence. Breathe deep and just start. I love the Latin language, speaking it will help you understand many words, their origins and their meaning. Good Luck!
