Yeaaah, it's insane. I'm an English-Finnish translation student and we had a course on the basics of interpreting to see if we wanted to specialize in it. It's a lot, listening, remembering, translating, and speaking at the same time, even consecutive interpreting is really fast paced even though the speaker gives you spaces between sentences. I ended up overwhelmed, crying in the bathroom after class, every single time. The teacher was incredible, very supportive, I just like the comfort of my blanket, ability to research mid translation, and translation memory.

So cool! I don't think I'm cut out for that, but I do want to learn ASL. I worked with a wide variety of disabled kids, and I'm always looking to be more useful to them

Gosh, i love your hair!! this was the perfect time for your shorts to appear on my feed cuz im taking elementary ASL this semester and didnt know a lick of it. Interpretors always sorta fascinated me (there were two in my pre-cal class, and after seeing this it makes a lot more sense why now) seriously, what they do is so cool :)

I had a brother in law who was pushed through the old 'learn to vocalize' speech method. Learning sign was not an option. When I read Oilver Sacks' book Seeing Voices I was both fascinated and horrified by the genius of gesturing language and that it had been actively pushed underground. Seeing a production of Children of a Lesser God was also a profound experience. Keep sharing your rich experiences and talents!

Interestingly, the history of simultaneous interpretation (between any languages) more or less began with the Nuremberg trials. It technically existed beforehand, but it wasn't really used. But for that trial, they needed interpretation between german and several other languages, and there was SO much information that it was already an incredibly long trial. They wanted to be expedient about it and not have it take literally 4 years, so they employed some extremely talented intepreters to do simultaneous interpretation. And nowadays, it's the standard way of doing things! And honestly even if simultaneous interpretation wasn't the standard, I could never be a good interpreter, as much as I think I might enjoy the job. I have ADHD and it's not uncommon for me to take a second or two after someone is finished speaking to process what they said, or for me to straight up stop listening for 5-10 seconds because they said something that sent me off on a random train of thought. Trying to manage all that in two languages at once would be beyond my capabilities

I'm in an interpreting program now and am terrified to start simultaneous interpreting. Somehow, though, i'm better at interpreting other people's words into asl than i am actually speaking for myself in the language.
