Your English didn't present any problems as far as being understood. So far I think I sound like Godzilla wearing a shock collar but it is interesting enough to put some time into it. Maybe I'll improve or maybe not. Your sound is kind of what I'm after, so however you learned your technique it was clearly effective.

Hmmm, your Kargyraa is not that low, like for instance that of the Gyoto monks from Tibet. Also, going low, I hear a deformation in the tones, maybe practice on this a wee more? :) Go check Rowan Hartsuiker here on KZbin, he has a neat, low Kargyraa, that is tonally marvellous. :) I hope you see this as constructive.

I really appreciate you taking time to do this video, it was amazing. Also, your english is perfect. I have a question for you, at 2:24, what is the first style of throat singing you describe? Do you have a video tutorial on this? I have been practicing throat singing for a short time, and it sounds like I can almost hit those "overtones" (that "whistling" sound). I would like to know if you have something on this style that will help me practice better. Thank you so much.

Amazing! Just watched Anna Marie and this was in my recommendations to watch next. How similar is what you do to what she does? It seems you use your throat more, with the “coughing technique”, and she is not using her throat as much. But once again I only just today discovered people can do this. I have heard beatboxing battles where the beatboxers used a little bit of throat singing, how do you call it, Kargyyra, but I didn’t know it was this type of voice manipulation.
@RenVasTerul4 жыл бұрын
Okay, so what Anna Maria Hefele does is called overtonic singing, and at its core it is essentially the same thing as is used in all types of throat singing (khoomei, sygyt, kargyyra etc) :-) It's those high pitched "whistling" sounds produced by the position of lips and tongue. Kargyyra on other hand (the growly one), is commonly used in beatbox and is still pushed to its technical limits by those creative amazing people :-D They tend to call it "throat bass" but its pretty much the same thing ;-)

pretty good tutorial brochacho. Not really sure I agree with the concept of increasing pressure or tension, since in standard dag kargyraa it can be kind of important for learners to keep in mind to stay relaxed. Styles of khoomei and sygyt involve this concept of tension (constriction) a bit more, but not so much kargyraa. I try to think of it as more of an activation. In my experience teaching this, there can also be some negative effects of teaching it by coughing or clearing of the throat. I'm not a vocal anatomy expert, but there are definitely muscles involved in those processes other than the false vocal folds, and they often give learners habits that inhibit their tone, and in extreme cases their ability to initiate FVF vibration at all. Most commonly people tend to sort of"curl" their voice in something that sounds a bit like a kermit the frog impression lol. To singers learning through this way, definitely pay close attention not only to the amount of vibration you're getting, but also the other aspects of your tone. Really, everything above your neck should be configured just about the same as it would be if you were singing regularly. You don't seem to have these problems at all though ren, yours is pretty clean. Just something to keep in mind for learners who use this method. Also, it would be super cool if you'd join our discord server where we have a bunch of written lessons on the main throat singing styles, and we're constantly making ourselves available for live vc coaching. It's all free lol. discord.gg/RfE3hY3

Well technically speaking it is a technique that uses subharmonies, although they are produced in a different way than the "classical/choir" subharmonic singing. Yet they sound quite similar, which makes them easy to mistake often ;) Sometimes I cannot hear the difference when someone does subharmonic singing in a certain way

I 'think' I have the basic technique figured out.. but it's just a growl and I'm breathing out a LOT of air when I make that sound. Is that just the beginning and should I keep trying? Or am I doing something wrong? btw, nothing wrong with your English.
@RenVasTerul3 жыл бұрын
If you feel like you are losing a lot of air, and therefore can't sustain the sound for long, you may be doing it wrong. Make sure that you are using your diaphragm to push the air out (put a hand on your belly - you should feel as it squeezes when you breathe out). It's likely that you are indeed using a growl technique (like a dog/wolf's growl, not the metal one), which does in fact use a lot of air from your lungs. Generally growl resonance can be felt quite "low" in your throat (close to the base of neck), while proper kargyyra throat singing should resonate higher up, closer to your bottom jaw :) Hope it helps. Keep trying! ;)

I play bass guitar, i really like acts like Heilung or Wardruna, i've seen Huun Huur Tu three or four times (at least two times in Wroclaw, my hometown :)) and i tried to incorporate throat singing into my music. I'd like to ask - how do You build stamina? Cause when i try to throat sing for longer time, i get that itch in my throat, sort of, You know, like you're a bit cold. Is there a way? :)
@RenVasTerul6 ай бұрын
Hejooo! :) From my experience I can only say this - practicing the right way and practicing regularly for long time. For me it was about 6 months daily practice to stop feeling itchiness. But now I sometimes feel it still, even after all this years. It depends on your overall health, body moisture (being even slightly dehydrated makes big difference), and current statd of your vocal muscles. Generally I'd sum it up like this: 1. Listen to your body - if you start to feel vocal fatigue, pain, lose of voice - stop, take at least 12 hour rest. 2. Drink water. Tea, coffe, sweet drinks will make your throat dry - water is hands down the best drink for vocals, but fruit juices are great too! Especially fresh or unfiltered orange juice, because it helps to clear your throat. 3. Practice daily, whenever you get a chance. Frequent, small practice session (even couple minutes) are better than 1 super long session. 4. Over time increase the amount of time you spend on practice daily. If you stay consistent - your stamina will eventually increase :)

Wow this video is amazing but how did you make that sound at 3:17
@chrissncrossn67704 жыл бұрын
With a lot of training you can "generate" high and low notes. I needet round about 1 month for very low notes. High notes are harder to hold. Please watch out. You can harm your vocal coards

I’ve been watching videos on this for weeks, even paid for a class, and you video has been the most helpful so far. Thank you! I would definitely like to see a video on how to go lower.

Dude I just wanna say thank you so much. I love listening to Heilung and currently my favorite song is Asja and Norupo. They do some throat singing and it made me want to try it out. Plus, I recently started watching The Hu. I'm finally able to get some nice solid throaty sounds out! You're amazing man!

Thanks for the guide! I've been practicing for a few months now and I feel like I can do the base sound, but the scratchiness in my throat keeps appearing after a minute or two. Am I doing something wrong or should I just keep trying (obviously I stop as soon as it starts hurting and make sure I hydrate)? A friend suggested putting more time on warming up, but I tried it and it doesn't make a difference. I would be very grateful for advice! Also, your english is fine, don't worry about it! =)

Hi! Warming up is certainly important! :) There's many ways to do it though, so make sure to check out different options you can find online! One other thing is proper relaxation. When under stress and you push it, it can create tension in your neck or jaw and cause pain. But still, some itchiness in couple first months is normal :)

Istnieje u nas w domu taka mała tradycja wśród moich znajomych. Gdy po imprezie ktoś zamierza wyjechać, łapiemy go między siebie i trzymając się za ręce stojąc w ciasnym kręgu, wydajemy stały ton. Znajdujemy wspólny ton i wpadamy w rezonans, robiąc taki pożegnalny masaż dźwiękiem :D

Wspaniala tradycja ! 😊

you are in fact teaching it wrong dude. In khöömei kargyraa there is no throat constriction at all. The sound is solely produced by false vocal chords and they are vibrating the best when there is no tightness at all when doing Mountain-style 'dag' kargyraa. Totally relaxed. In steppe kargyraa there is some constriction and a different register is used.
@RenVasTerul2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kinda know that now. I didn't realise that when I was recording this video. I was self-learned so I learned it different way. I wouldn't necesarilly say that its wrong tho. It does not hurt or harm the voice if practiced properly and I think it's just a way easier way to learn throat singing. I am currently trying to learn the "proper" dag kargyyra, so I might do an update on this video in some time when I get a hold of this.

I've read that throat singing from Tuva developed from trying to mimic animals (at least it's a theory) and when I heard you I was like holy sh*t where did this beastly sound come from
@kagar34652 жыл бұрын
Yes but nobody really knows who did it first. Tuvans, Mongols, and Altay people agree that the first people to sing like this were the nomads around the Altay mountains. Even Sayan Bapa from Huun Huur Tu said Tuvan, Mongol, Altay, even Buryat style is from the same source.

Hey Ren! I just wanted to stop by to say thank you for your tutorial, it really helped me learn throat singing. I commented on this video 9 months ago and I've been training since then, it was a difficult path, but today I can already sing entire Heilung songs with throat singing. so once again thank you!
