Love this. On point to add: speech and music may look like they are similar volumes, because of the peaks of the waveforms, but the intro/outro music will often unpleasantly overpower the speech that follows. This is because music is essentially what I call "thicker" than speech. I love that you use Adobe Audition. I used this at our radio studio back when it was 'Cool Edit Pro'. I also have background in PA, sound recording as well as sound technician for radio. Disproportionately loud intros are everywhere, and possibly only people like us can stop them!

Excellent, Kevin! After "edging" into videomaking for years, recently becoming more and more of a student, I've gone through several video editing programs, including Premiere Pro; I've now gotten fed up with their "milk the customer" policies and have migrated to DaVinci Resolve, and was delighted to find this program has a superb feature that automatically syncs an audio file with a video file, and combines them in the project. No more fishing for the exact sync point or waiting forever for auto-sync. It's just two mouse clicks, maybe 3 seconds, and done. Ready to drag the video (with new audio) to the time line.

An excellent video but I'm still confused as to what's so wrong about wiring the mics into the camera rather than an external recorder. Is it in case there's some sort of delay introduced that would result in fine tuning the syncing?
@DIYCameraGuy9 жыл бұрын
+Flamekebab DSLR's, consumer camcorders and Mirrorless cameras don't have good quality audio pre-amps in the camera. They also don't provide phantom power that many pro mics require. There are ways to get decent audio but a dedicated audio recorder that is going to be your best option.
@Flamekebab9 жыл бұрын
DIYCameraGuy I was just curious really. I was thinking "The audio I get from wiring them into the camera has been identical to what I get when I use an external recorder" but figured that the rest of the advice was top notch so there was something I was missing! Fair enough if there's a substantial difference in quality or a need for phantom power. Other than XLR what's the advantage of a more specialised dedicated audio recorder over, say, a decent quality dictaphone?
@DIYCameraGuy9 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Davies Yes, some preamps in recorders are weak, like the zoom recorders. People are comparing the zoom preamps against other recorders, not cameras. I like the TASCAM recorders better but I will take a crappy recorder over a camera pre any day. normally I would use a wireless system to a recorder so I cam monitor the audio from the subject. This is not the case in this video so it would make more sense to go directly into the recorder. I think Mr. Basic is just showing ways of using the different gear. Thank you for reading and I hope that helps.

I think on a budget it's OK to connect your mic into your camera, as long as your sound doesn't clip, there's no white noise, and other distractions. I got Rode lav and shotgun mics, gonna experiment if sound quality is more or less OK on 80D/200D as I saw a lot of people just do it. And later on I'll probably get Zoom.

Entertaining, useful and spot-on. Thank you. This is one of your productions I missed, probably because I didn't know about the bell. let alone click it. You have reminded me to take the H1 and H2 with me to record non-sync ambient noise for possible later use in editing. In the olden days, media was expensive, now it's time that's the real cost. I have a wealth of old footage featuring camera noise, audio auto-gain "hunting" and my off-camera adenoidal breathing. I have a bit of re-mixing to do... I may be a little time... Oh, and one more thing, some of the Chinese "crappy" microphones perform well at an unbelievable fraction of the price of even Rode, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica stuff. Select and reject and return if disappointed. No-quibble returns policies are to be used and enjoyed.

I just bought a Shure Vp83 and I love it, I'm still young and cannot afford a lot things so I bought a good extension chord and some shoe mounts to build my own DIY boom pole, once I experiment with this mic and its capabilities I'll save up and get an audio recorder, Zoom H4 or H6, great video!
@BasicFilmmaker9 жыл бұрын
+CommanderBeta Nothing wrong with that mic. Get it close to ya and it will sound great. Thanks!
@JodyBruchon6 жыл бұрын
The Zoom H4n is an extremely valuable investment. Four-channel recording, phantom power, AMAZING built-in mics, usability as a USB audio interface, and 96kHz/24-bit sampling are things that the beginner may not realize they want, but they will eventually want such things. Even if you "go pro" with your video work you'll still be using that Zoom well into the future. It will outlast all of your cameras. For someone who can barely afford a camcorder, $200 might seem expensive, but it's more than worth it.
@BasicFilmmaker6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely Jody! I still have my H4n and it's seen a ton of use without any glitches. I upgraded to an H6 (which I LOVE) merely for the fact that the H6 is almost instant on - no waiting - and super quick formatting. Both the H6 and H4 can be connected to a power source which is super helpful for me as I keep it mounted in my studio, and don't have to deal with batteries. Even the H1 is super valuable, although way too easy to break.

Thanks for the video. I loved it!! 2 quick questions... 1) Can I use a wireless professional "singers" mic on a microphone stand and angle it down? 2) what kind of mic stand would I need if I wanted a standing "talking head" video?
@BasicFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
Sure you can. The singer type mics need to be held very close to the mouth. They can be pointed down, but again, it wouldn't matter as it would be in your face. Do you already have a mic, which is why you're asking? What brand/model is it - I'd be able to tell you better if I knew. If not, is there a reason you want to use that type of mic? Thanks Kimi!
@kimiweintraub18665 жыл бұрын
@@BasicFilmmaker Wow! I can't believe you responded... and so quickly!! Thank you so much! The name of the mic is Shure GLXD24/SM58 Digital Vocal Wireless System with SM58 Handheld Microphone, Z2. I am a singer and use this for performances. However, I am setting up a home studio for my green screen spokesmodel work. I would not be able to hold the mic and have it in frame. I am willing to invest in a different mic if you think this mic wouldn't work boomed out of frame. I have been taking diligent notes from your videos and I plan on making your bank lights today. Are you willing to make a list of what to buy to make the lights DIY style? Is there any other gear you specifically recommend me buy that's good price for the quality? I feel bad asking you all of these questions, but I'm starting my video business from scratch and need all the help I can get. Honestly, I'm just watching your videos to make my purchases! I am happy to pay you for your input as well :) kimiweintraub.com/ kimiweintraub@gmail.com
@BasicFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kimi! Wow! That's a nice unit. My suggestion is to try it first before investing more money into more mics. You might be able to boom it out of frame and have it work, and if so, you're golden. If not, we can look at other options. I'll be at NAB and visiting Shure next week, so I'll ask if they have also have a shotgun mic that would work with this unit. Also, before building the bank lights and going through all that, first setup your lighting for yourself, and test pulling yourself off the green screen using that lighting. Sometimes it works just fine, and if so, it may be a matter of adjusting how you do that instead of all the other lighting, and that gets you started. I looked at your website, and your photos are stunning. To make that happen on video, you should have 3 lights, a key, a fill, and a hairlight. We can talk more on the exact questions, but your first stop is setting everything up, make sure the camera is framed properly and in focus with a good lens, getting the lighting done well on you, and then tweaking everything. Also, do you HAVE TO use a green screen? If not, making some sort of nice background set may be easier. I'm at thebasicfilmmaker@gmail.com. If you're interested, although the course is being redone and older, you may want to check out: www.basicfilmmakeruniversity.com/p/front-side-of-the-lens as that may help you.

Hi Kevin, I just found your videos and they're brilliant! Really funny, no B.S. and informative without being baffling - thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm wanting to get into voiceover and have a Rode NTUSB which, in my opinion, improves the sound of my voice no end, but I am also aware that I may not be able to tell how good/bad something is in comparison to other systems. You don't mention a mic like this here (I don't think!), and I watched another KZbinr just screaming 'DON"T GET A USB MIC!' with no explanation for their advice whatsoever. The video in question was made in 2012, so I wonder if perhaps the built-in technology has improved significantly in that time? I'd love to hear your take on this, many thanks.

Hi Rachel! Yeah, everyone’s got an opinion. There was one guy who slammed the Shure SM7B mic, and he got roasted online as he didn’t know how to set it up and that’s why the mic didn’t work well. LOL! The Rode mic is fantastic. For voice over, just keep it near the mouth for voice over, and not sitting two feet away on your desk next to your computer and it will sound great. You can check out this guy who is a voice over pro, and has extended for my viewers a two hundred dollar discount on his voice over course. You don’t need to buy the course if you don’t want to, but has all sorts of tips and tricks. He is a PRO for 10 years. I mention him as he uses a Blue Yeti mic into his computer. 😁 bit.ly/VOCourse200Off

Wow I never knew they were called Acoustic Panels, and always assumed they were expensive. Thanks didn't know I could improve my audio this cheap, I feel like the reflector is a great cheap investment for light as well for bounce light and diffusing light.

couldnt agree more!! I've seen so many kids show their rigs for their short films with the mic on the camera. As you said, Rode makes them with the hotshoe mount and it does have its place. But its not in narrative film making :)

+The Post Color Blog (Dave's Tuts) Thanks Dave! I've said this in previous videos - I am NOT a sound guy. These aren't some new things and have been around forever. This episode was prompted by me hearing sooooo many crappy sounding videos that looked really good, and, I was listening to some old radio programs and movies, no sound or really awful looking, and hearing EXCELLENT sound, and these were made 70 YEARS AGO. :)
@PostColorGear9 жыл бұрын
I agree. I was watching some older movies myself (I've been on a kick lately. I watched the Aviator about Howard Hughes and a documentary on Orson Welles), But yes, even back THEN they had amazing sound. People cant be lazy. Not when they are making short films at least and asking people to devote their time to watch them.

Hi Kevin, thx for your great videos. We will be talking for puppets in a drama class...we want to use a nikon d3400 to record our videos of the puppets in real settings (i.e. kitchen, standing behind a counter/island etc)... we are limited with our budget but still want to know which mic you recommend. One colleague said to do the voices after we film (during video editing to match our puppets movong their mouth) and i say we could do the voices while we film with a good mic. What do you recommend? Thank you kindly.

Super, great, video! I didn't realize, I was a lazy film maker. Well, I never tripped off the audio, until, now and watching your video, I'm super confused, mainly, cause I didn't know it was so many different mics and techniques. Anyway, I like your presentation. I learned and laughed at the same time. Thanks, for this video:)
@BasicFilmmaker8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nezi. I watched a few of your videos, you have a nice voice. I think a shotgun mic or something a few inches out of frame and your videos would up in sound quality 100%. If you're already using a mic, get the mic close to you out of frame. Hope that helps.
@NeziNappsakaNezi8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Okay, so I'm learning the terms of the mics. Question! Is the shotgun mic, like, the Rhodes mics that goes on the top of the camera? If so, is that the mic that will be, best, to put on the mic stand? No, I don't have a mic, yet. I'm using the camera mic that's on my Canon 5ti. Thanks, for your compliment and reply and yes, all of your information is very helpful.
@BasicFilmmaker8 жыл бұрын
Nezi, yes, a shotgun mic is like those ones you put on top of your camera, which, well, you shouldn't in this case. You could get a cheap mic stand (boom stand, which goes over your head a bit), and a decent mic like a Rode, and make sure you get an extension cable, as these shotgun mics have very little cords. I can detail this out a bit better if you want or if that doesn't make sense. This stuff can be daunting at first, but just persist and you'll be a pro in no time. :)

I've been looking for a video exactly like this for a good workflow in Adobe Audition! Thanks so much! Has any corrected you or made suggestions on different techniques in Audition? Whats the overall consensus been? Your technique worked great for my interview dialogue audio!
@BasicFilmmaker9 жыл бұрын
+Lief Media Group No one has corrected me. There are so many ways to do dialog editing, depends on short and quick or deep. It's always what works best for you, using your mics and recorders, with the person talking, ion the room our outside, etc. Like video editing, the way to get really great sound, is to watch a bunch of audition sound editing videos, try it, and see if it works. This works for me because it's always my voice in the same room using the same mics and recorders.
@liefmediagroup67529 жыл бұрын
+Basic Filmmaker thanks for the reply! That's good to know. I just managed to get my hands on the Zoom F8. Haven't used it on set yet, only as a USB interface in my editing suite. Nevertheless, it seems like it's going to be a great little recorder and a vast improvement over my dated H4N. The TC drifts a little bit, but the guys at Trew Audio sold me on the free Denecke TC Toolbox app to jam TC from a phone or iPad. Might be a good topic for future vids!

The one bit of advice in this I'd not heard of is mixing the sound from a lav mic with the sound from a shotgun. That seems like an interesting idea...thanks!
@BasicFilmmaker9 жыл бұрын
+genjii931 I didn't say this in the video, as I don't want people bailing on good sound, but there are times I have mixed the crappy on board camera sound with the shotgun sound, just as add a tiny-tiny-tiny touch of ambiance. A little (read nearly undetectable amount) goes a LONG way.

The NTG-3 is freaking amazing, but not the best for under $1500 I'd say. By then you could get a Sennheiser MKH 416, have you tried that one? Great video btw, I'm an audio guy originally but there was still some relevant info for me. Oh and all the love in the world to Rode mics, they're the best for the money pretty much across the board. I own multiple and they put a smile on my face every time I use them.
@BasicFilmmaker6 жыл бұрын
Although aa couple hundred more bucks, the Sennheiser MKH 416 is no doubt better than the NTG-3.
@GraydenKnoll9 жыл бұрын
Loved the video, but what do you think about getting an extension cable so that you can plug it in to your camera, but still have the shotgun mic closer to the act.
@BasicFilmmaker9 жыл бұрын
+Grayden Knoll Hey Grayden! Yes, that will absolutely work. Keeping the mic close to you and running it into the camera is way better. The next step though, would be not using the camera's crappy sound and using an off camera recorder, especially in DSLRs. Until DLSR manufacturers start putting proper sound electronics in their cameras (like higher end camcorders do) that is going to be the best you can get.
