TWGC Topic #9 Part A - Raag Kirtan

1 of 4 of The Why Guru Course (TWGC) Topic #9 which looks at Raag Kirtan in the Sikh musical tradition. We look at the concept behind raag and taal, the science of it, listen to some of it and look at the instruments. We also look at the method of passing on the tradition and discuss what it would take to revitalise that tradition in our Panth.

sangat ji! we should all print basics of sikhi's youtube channels logos and we should take screan shots of videos and put them in every local gurudwaras we have near by! if we all do little bit end of the day it becomes much more! in every gurudwara america they have advertisement boards to advertise their business for all the punjabi people! if we put the printed pictures of basics of sikhi! people will notice it and with guru ji's kirpa they can learn also the way we are learning!

Veeji, very happy with all your videos and getting to learn a lot every day. Just one request at 2:30 Jagraj veerji mentioned that Guru Gobind Singh Ji sent Baba Banda Singh Bhahdar to take revenge for Chote Sahibzade's Shahidi, but I believe that our Gurus were way beyond getting in anger and seeking revenge. I think he sent Baba Banda Singh Bahadar because it was important against the injustice that Wazir Khan was causing during that time. If you agree with me then please edit that part in the video or add an annotation in the video making the correction. This channel is in Chardi Kala now and we don't want anything wrong to be spread out through this. Bhulan Chukan di Khima.

If raags are moods then they are not time dependent, just like moods or emotions. We do not wait for time to come to show our anger or love. A great misconception that gurbani raags are time dependent.

Suvak Dhesi there is a youtube channel called Kirtan Nirmolak Heera. The channel.teaches raag on the vaja but of you want to learn tanti saaj (dilruba taus etc) then you ustad learn from a tanti saaj academy. Usa and UK there is raj academy.

jkvlondon can I have a source for this please. the new testament has been modified so much and translated so much it's hard to decipher what is original that was written a many many years after Jesus's demise anyway.

feel so helpless that such amazing daat of raags and taus dilruba are lost in the panth, and the panth is not very aggressive to get it back..Very big reason why youth is not able to connect with kirtan.. its been 70 years britishers went away from india but...

I mean u listed the different types of raags on the board and I didn't see raag malkauns. I'm pretty sure it's sang by great kirtanies just like my grandfather

Sahib Singh Raag Malkauns is not one of the 31 Raags of Guru Granth Sahib ji or any of the Mishrat (mixed Raags) in SGGS. It is however mentioned in Raag Maalaa and many people do sing in Raag Malkauns, especially as its a Bir Rass raag and therefore many kirtanis do use it for Dasam Bani

26:30 Dr Gurnam Singh is not a very good exponent of Gurmat Sangeet. May be use Bhai Avtar Singh-Bhai Gurcharan Singh or Bhai Bakshish Singh or even Bhai Balbir Singh as examples. Good lecture though 🙏

Bhai Samund Singh is a great one too but his recordings are not many. Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi Jatha and Bhai Shamsher Singh Zakhmi Jatha are brilliant and many recordings of their Kirtan are available online. With apologies, Dr Gurnam Singh is not in the same class as those I have just named.

Brother why are you giving wrong information. First raag to appear in Guru Granth Sahib ji is Raag Asaa, on page no.8 Sri raag comes at sixth position, in order of appearance, on page no. 14. There are four more raags which appear before Sri raag.

Appreciate the correction but remember, at the end of every video he states “I’m sure I made a lot of mistakes forgive me”. As humans we are sure to make some mistakes so atleast be more respectful of it.

@rebrand7802 This was the simplest nistake that he did. When you are teaching somebody, you don't make such silly mistakes. Gurbani raags are just moods and are not time dependent.

The whole baani is written under sixty raags of equal and independent status. No main or sub raags. Did not expected wrong statement from you on the "number of raags "
