Why are Gurdwaras failing? Can I leave Sikhi?- Sikhi vs Atheism #1

Intro talk about Why Gurdwaras fail at teaching Sikhi. This is the first in a set of videos addressing common arguments by Atheists against religion and providing the SIkh perspective. The atheist argument addressed in this talk is about freedom of religion and the punishment for leaving Sikhi? Delivered on the 21st October 2013 @ Royal Holloway.

I am a muslim and I believe in my religion alot but also started learning about other religions instead of judging them by their cover and I must say I am still muslim and shall stay faithful but I see as Sikh is a really good religion

The message of this video is that when you go to gurdwara... Pretend your at school trying to understand and learn something. And the homework should be reading gurbani. And then when it's time for taking Amrit it's like getting your university degree. Treat your Sikhi like how in your in school

Gurdwara ( a place where the guru resides) should be within us but what is happening now is we have made a business for the reading and learning of Guru Granth Sahib ji. What I mean by this is that Sikhs now are so busy that they rather pay hundreds of pounds and ask others to read gurbani on their behalf and after few days comes the completion, they come in with all of their relatives like it is some sort of party and complete this ritual yes you heard it right a ritual which the Sikhs have made it into. They somehow believe that they have now done a good deed and all has been set right. The thing to notice is that they never do this when they are in school, college or university. They attend the classes in school or university to learn and further their career but when it comes to Guru Granth Sahib Ji they just want to get other people to read it for them. It is then no wonder people lack knowledge and will continue to live in ignorance.

Harjinder Singh I think you'll find that in the midst of a battle, most soldiers do need permission to leave their positions. Its not insulting. BUt then, one can be insulted if one goes around looking for things to be insulted by or has a previous issue that is invoked by the word rather than the intention behind.

Just to clear this up, the Quran clearly says that there is no compulsion in religion. The matter of apostasy has been an issue and debated among the scholars of Islam. It doesn't make sense to kill someone for leaving Islam when it's holy books is clearly against it.

The Quran is clearly against apostasy. It states that apostates will be severely punished in the afterlife and according to Sharia Law it is punishable by death.

Any chance you guys can redo the audio for this? Like rerecord the same words and overlay it to the video? It's really really hard to hear and I have my volume turned all the way up. This isn't a problem in any of your other videos that I've watched except for the sikhi vs atheism series. The background noise / static is louder than the actual voices. Or maybe transcribe some captions?

I appreciate you making this video. However, you fail to bring up any fundamental differences Sikhism and Atheism. Sure, Sikhism prohibits violence against apostates, but so does Buddhism. It's still begs the question: why do people need faith?

"faith" is a great way to learn, relearn and seek continuos guidance on how to lead a meaningful life as an individual and as a soceity. It doubles up as a value system too. Just like schools teach an individual on the hows and whys of life and the rule of law tries to keep an individual and soceity civilized. Thats how I look at Sikhi.

Buddhism is not even a religion about god most of the eastern beliefs are not about that Hinduism is in between but if you look at really religions most of them don't accept it

nikos t Abolitionism, egalitarianism, etc, all "isms"- I include all these for the sake of balance because only "isms" with negative connotations were mentioned. Sikhism isn't just a path it's also a mentality. The reason you hear "Sikhi" mentioned instead of "Sikhism" by many Sikhs, has something to do with language. In Punjabi equivalent of saying "Sikhism" is "Sikhi". When you hear someone talking about the Sikh religion in Punjabi, they'll say "Sikhi".

nikos t *gurmukhi is actually a script, NOT a language. Gurmukhi is a script for writing punjabi language mostly. Sikh scripture is written in gurmukhi script, but has word from multiple languages*

Hi mate, Atheism is not disapproving the existence of god. according to me its rejecting the claims being made about existence of god in the absence of sufficient evidence. All the religion on earth would ask you to take concept god on faith. To me believing something without good reason is gullibility. Apart from that if something is mysterious then it cant be god. If god is mysterious then how do we know its god. Heaps of mysteries been solve but no one ever found a god behind it.

Harmandir Sahib you donate 1000 rupees in Golakh they give you a sarupa(they dont even know where 1000rupees came from, it could be gang or murder money and they give you a sarupa) another serious issue @ Harmandir sahib they have VIP line cuz they care so much about peoples time, since when did people of Punjab become so schedule planned or busy that they need to get infront of sangat waiting in line for hours and bow, but when these VIP pass buyers go to amritsar airport these fools have to wait in line like normal people. When we donate food to gurudwara we donate and we eat that food ourselves we dont VAND CHAK, we take our plates and sit separate where we want. Source of maya for harmandir sahib: 1. 100000's of sangat donating in several golakhs @ Swarn Mandir daily 2. Kand paths happening in 40, 50 rooms every day(waiting list is years to give name) 3. many sangat especially business man give their bank account number to Harmandir sahib officials for big regular donations. 4. VIP line member money what have they done? all the gold was donatied by MAharaja Ranjit Singh after King Ranjit singh what have Gurudwaras done. Corrupt Punjab government has atleast made Virasat e khalsa, roads and Kabbadi world cup. What has Gurudwaras done other then fight each other and distance away new generation?

I visited last month to SHRI HARMANDIR SAHIB I noticed they stopped giving the sarupa now. I cant see any vip line over there but one was there which is used for old people who cant stand there for long time. For celebraties (VIP) people i think its better they should come and go quickly because people are crazy they want to stop them want to have snap with them so its better to let them go quick as it create more problem to one who meditate. I live in gujarat in India and the gurudawara over here serves food to most of the beggers and poor. Even in Darbar sahib people all over the part of the world eats food over there (vand chak). Why do you always like to compare with Islam. It seems you sikhs have an eternal grudge on us since your gurus time. If you want your can go to Pakistan and see how well managed your gudwaras are. 100 times better than the ones in uk or india.
