Basil Netherby is a masterpiece of brooding supernatural fiction. This unabridged audio book style story narrates a ghost story or a story of possession.
Basil Netherby has many of the elements of gothic literature. It was written by Arthur or A.C. Benson, the brother of E. F. Benson. It has elements of M. R. James, who was a personal friend of A C Benson and is even reminiscent of H. P. Lovecraft at times in the idea of immense supernatural forces that cannot be beaten. Or can they?

Thank you for bringing up archetypes and how they relate to the story. Years ago, I was restlessly channel surfing and I came upon an old man sitting in a chair. All he did was sit in this chair and talk, but what he said was so fascinating, I stopped and listened as long as he talked. He was Joseph Campbell, of course, and I just unearthed my copy of "Transformation of Myths Through Time" and I need to do some reading.

Great story as always but...I wanted to also say that although you're reducing the time you spend in mental health work, I'm glad there are people like you doing it....and wish there were more. As someone who has been in and out of MH services the number one thing that has made a difference is being treated like an individual, and a person - not a collection of symptoms or a label. Sadly I think it's getting worse and services don't have the time or capacity - meaning workers have to reduce us to something less than people just to do their jobs without despairing. Anyway - thanks for being one of the good ones :) x

I don't tend to speak about my thoughts about the poor state of mental health services on this channel, but I often do elsewhere. I have many friends of course who still work in the field and most of them are decent humans. Yet people are let down. It's a great shame.

Fantastically enjoyable listening to this story in your reading voices. Thanks so much Tony---enjoyed your Ramble very much too. It must have been a Thing in the 1800s for sets of writing siblings to go by just their first initials. Quite confusing.

I love the conversation into a bit of Freudian & Jungian psychology applied to the story as an evolution of human psyche in time space based on experience(s), exposure(s), & plot construction(s) which allow us, the audience, to re-member into the transformative process with the main character(s) such that a level of self is able to come to some integration of the whole (of story, of life) along the journey/path the writer leads us down; &. If it is a simple relatability/relativity of understanding, we come out having more compassion, more cooperative capability, & therefore more community with which we might connect to when we interact in the “real” world (virtual as well), via STORY-LAND. This IS similar work to what you do in your day to day health care job, only those of us turning to listen to your channel are seeking a safely, self guided tour around the “playing field” of life, super natural or just of NATURE-all-Y [we]; & as the teller you remain in the role of a medium, guiding us through the unknown, the tunnel of darkness & into the light…even if that light is “the unbearable lightness of being”. For this we are attracted to you from our own comfortable places to listen, as witness, to a shared experience of unique & hither to unknown places; that draw of the uncomfortable spaces of the universal psyche- our archetypal role as AUDIENCE/SAFE PARTICIPANT into the OTHERWORLD… Thank you! Your storytelling & the commentary afterward is our modern fireside adventure & how lucky we are for your HIGH QUALITY of EXPERIENCED GIFTS! With much appreciation, sincerely, across the pond & 1200 miles of land, élan.

Humblest of performance suggestions: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Young Goodman Brown, Bartleby the Scrivener, The Devil and Dan’l Webster, even House of Seven Gables or Scarlett Letter. Do read them as an Englishman, please. The flyover country accents, cowboy and southern drawls- hadn’t developed contemporaneously to these works. ‘Muricans sounded English, Scottish, Continental/Dutch. The Mid-Atlantic speech of Hepburn, Grant (and yes, me) was inchoate. And for the love of the Q/K’s English forego that wicked cant*, Bostonian. Xoxo, you’re fabulous,Tony.

If this was difficult writing to narrate, you certainly didn't show it. You even managed to make your accent subtly, suitably plummy. As the story went on, I was reminded of 'Full Circle ', and of 'Oh Whistle...' It seems that the brothers shared a common vision of that other world just over there, but war way over there. Of brothers I have only one. He has borderline personality disorder with an over 50 years habit of fragile narcissism (easier to enable than fight him), and ADHD. I can understand your wanting to take a step back. We would if we could. Thanks as always Tony. Back to baking bread. (Butternut with pepitas and nutmeg). 🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖

@@ClassicGhost Aye, Tony: they are wretched and ubiquitous. Doughnuts weirdly raw but dry within, and so overly sugared, it hurts one’s teeth just to see them. Do you know they collaborate with Harpoon Brewery on a range of ales every autumn? Lord have mercy.
