This lady had so much character and a very individual beauty. Photographs of her in her youth have a kind of wistfulness I've never seen in another actress. Thank you so much for uploading.

As a young girl one of my greatest pleasures was visiting the Turnabout Theatre. For many years she was a permanent "guest star" there and her poignant, saucy renditions of Forman Brown's wonderful songs inspired me. Though I was never able to write to his level, he and she have remained exemplars to me during my entire, though more modest, creative life. Truly exceptional posting. Thanks so much for this gift.

The Bride of Frankenstein's director, James Whale, wanted a unique look for the Monster's mate, and I believe he had Elsa in mind from the get-go in the making of the film. Mysterious, eerie, and oddly beautiful, she was the perfect bride for Frankenstein's "monster". Ironically, her screen time and dialogue are very brief, yet her Nefertiti-like image from that film has made her an iconic part of cinema history.

I recent read Elsa Lanchester's autobiography 'Charles Laughton and I', published in 1938, and practically none of these photographs were included. A lovely & splendid tribute. Thank you!

The background music is really beautiful, can you tell us what it is? I always thought Elsa Lanchester was attractive as Mary Shelly in BOF>

Great tribute! Good to see other's appreciate Elsa's talents. I truly believe if she was a young actress working today she would be a major star. It is tragic she didn't get more lead roles to get her teeth into. Still, watch 'The Beachcomber', 'Private Life of Henry the Eighth', 'Passport to Destiny' and 'Rembrandt' to get an idea of what she was capable of.

Its great how retrospection can bring cream to the top. During the golden years of British cinema Elsa was one of many excellent actresses and one presumed that this standard was the norm. Now with all the opportunaties of reliving this era in cinema it is much appreciated just how remarkable Elsas performances are. Thank you.

When she was younger, she was both beautiful and ugly at the same time. A rare, very sexy quality that very few women have. Kind of like Ellen Barkin or Jeanne Moreau in their primes. That's meant as the ultimate compliment. The ugliness makes their beauty that much more human, and that much more sexy.
