The last signal before the crash site comes into view at 38:22 - which is about 25 seconds before the junction where it happened.

@@Mariazellerbahn you can in exceptional circumstances, remember the surface of the wheel that is in contact with the rail is only roughly the size of a 20p coin

In 2000 Brian Souter offered to up some of the line speeds to 100mph (max 85 apart from Andover to Laverstock North), double most of the single track beyond Salisbury and introduce Meridian style units. The then Labour government turned him down. Still love driving our 159s though.

Looks like NR have recently spent some money on this route a lot of the track looks new as do some of the bridges

Train spotters bridge. We saw a lot of engines from there in the 80s.

I noticed that, thought it might be in connection with 9'6" containers, are they routed this way? If it is electrified it wouldn't be on the third rail, most interesting.

@@iman2341 So it was, I was aware the line from Basingstoke to Southampton was to be converted to 25kv but unaware the line to Salisbury was included, strange that the electrification seems to stop there, seems to have stalled at least for the time being.

Now that the dual voltage technology is tried and tested, no-one is ever going to replace the third rail with catenary. There are much higher electrification priorities.

I can only comment aesthetically and on that basis I hope they don’t. The whole overhead electrification thing is such an eye sore. I know that’s not the priority lol but personally Ive always loved the southern region for not having them...

White painting points reflects enough of the solar heating effect to help prevent excessive expansion causing the points to not lock and detect

Love these Drivers eye views watch them most of the time. What I don’t understand is network rail all that old rail sat in the middle of the tracks and side of tracks if they cleared it all up the scrap money would be a lot.

Steve, sorry about that but this was published in the early days of my attempts at this stuff... I hadn’t developed my techniques nor had I a computer powerful enough to run a non-linear editor. Also the footage itself suffers from ‘soft focus’, a built-in “feature” of the GoPro 3 which required a home-made fix.

@@hastingsdiesels ..no worries mate...enjoyed it anyways..used to go to Salisbury from Waterloo, had a mate who lived there..that was in the days when you would ride a 33 or a 50..or an occasional 47...proper loco hauled trains..!!!.

Another great cab ride spoilt by having no audio. I fail to see why, the driver being conducted along the route should be a problem. Aren't train crews allowed to talk anymore, or is it just camera shyness?.

Probably done away with by the PC elf'n'safety nazis. These killjoys are the reason why you can't ride on an old EMU on the mainline now. Mustn't have anyone distracting the driver now must we luvvie? So glad I'm retired from the sad excuse for a "Railway" that we have today.

Perhaps this is a private video and the driver wants to remain anonymous. Driving is considered a professional job not a joy ride. Even operating video equipment such as a mobile phone is against the rules

Couldn't the Waterloo to Exeter use an electric train as far as Basingstoke, then get a diesel to pull it ?

It could. But it would incur a delay while the train blocked the SWML at Basingstoke, delay to all roads while a loco were shunted across (this would be unworkable in the timetabling), it would incur extra cost of having double the number of traincrew (traction knowledge), it would reduce operational flexibility and increase risk (if one traincrew is late from their previous job, it has a greater knock-on effect and potentially blocks the SWML at Basingstoke). I know what you mean, but a worse example is the Euston to Chester service in a diesel Voyager - where only the last few miles from Crewe to Chester isn't "under the wires".

Well yes, "bi-mode" trains such as the 800-series Hitachi units that the GWR uses, they could be an option.

@@hastingsdiesels If the diesel was in the platform ready, surely it doesn't take long to connect up ? Only time I've ever seen them join a train was at Waterloo with the old Slam Doors, They just had to 'slam' into it and connect the cables, Trains aren't that frequent through Basingstoke are they ?

Looking at the current hour's schedule, www.opentraintimes.com/location/BSK/2021-09-22/18:59?empty_passenger=on&non_passenger=on&passenger=on&show_call=on&show_pass=on&show_stp=on&show_var=on&show_wtt=on&utf8=✓ , I can see 6 trains in one hour requiring platform 4, so that doesn't leave very long to play with - quite apart from the other difficulties I mentioned which would still need to be considered. . Looking at the signalling in the area, www.opentraintimes.com/maps/signalling/swml2 (scroll to near RH end) I can see an apparent absence of calling-on / shunt signals into platforms 1 & 4, so it looks to me as if routine coupling/uncoupling of trains at Basingstoke would require the area to be re-signalled.
