There were many times that my high school coach would shout out to me "Who do you think you are, Cousy?" BC was my inspiration on the court. What does not seem to be mentioned in these memorable videos is that one of the big reasons that the Celtics were so successful is they had the BEST team playing strategy of all the competition. All you had to do to see that is to look at the even scoring by all 5 and yes, 6 players that had the most playing time. There was no big scorer during the Cousy era. Each player averaged 19 to 21 points every game! "TEAM" Together Everyone Achieves More.
@steverenom.2992 жыл бұрын
You've stated it all so accurately. Usually the Celtics back then never had a top ten scorer. Remember Wilt averaging 50 points a game and guess who won the Championship - yup - The Boston Celtics. lol

I vividly remember being at the Bob Cousy Day game (March 17, 1963) with my older brother. We had seats in the first balcony, and when Bob broke into serious tears during his speech, some guy about 2 sections away shouted "WE LOVE YA COOZ!" THAT brought down the house! But watching him play and get all of his teammates involved in the game really taught me....and countless others...the importance of TEAMWORK!

Players today only appear to be better ball handlers because the refs don’t call palming/carrying anymore. EVERY SINGLE NBA player today would have been called for traveling, double dribbling, palming and carrying about 10x a game. The refs today are terrible and the league wants entertainment not “boring” fundamentals. Bob Cousy would be fine today because he would be an EVEN BETTER ball handler due to the “changes” in the game today. He dribbled with his left hand plenty. In those days you didn’t dribble left just for the sake of showing your “handles”. You only dribbled with your off hand when it was beneficial of necessary.

Exactly, they also refused to bring the ball over the basket during offense because dunking was seen as very disrespectful and offensive at the time. You’d get benched and the other team would go out of their way to pound you through the floor if you did.

K C Bob Cousy knew what every player on his team liked. He knew where to pass the ball fancy and his team mates were always ready for him. Better than Lebron at passing. Lebron would pass fancy and his team mates will not know its coming. Thus they miss getting thr ball more often.
@Johnkoth5 жыл бұрын
Bob Cousy literally ran the Boston offense. But anyone on the team was a good outlet passer. Their fast break was interchangable. Did not matter who ran it. But Bob Cousy was still #1 APG point guard in the NBA from 1953 to 1960. He was the best point guard of the 1950s. Oscar Robertson was the next great point guard. Best of the 1960s.

If you've tried coaching elementary or middle school basketball within the past 8-10 years, you'll find that every kid wants to be Steph Curry, shooting 3-bombs as they approach the top of the key. Accuracy rate: Typically about 10 percent for these kids and maddening to the coaches. Turning back the clock 50 years, I'm sure youngsters in Cousy's day were probably driving middle school coaches nuts with behind-the-back passes and between-the-legs dribbling high jinks. "The Cooz" played before my time but I'm glad he still receives the historical mention he deserves.

Like Dr. J who was the bridge between the high flyers from yesterday to today, Cousy was the bridge from the early era to the beginning of the modern era in basketball, one of the few players from the NBA's 50 greatest players who played in the George Mikan era. (the others were Dolph Schayes, Paul Arizin and Bob Pettit).

One way to always spot a basketball novice is to wait for them to say something akin to, Bob Cousy couldn't hack it in today's game. These idiots can never actually come up with any reason for thinking that way. For them newer is better and that's all there is to it. That attitude Is bigger than just Sports punditry. It's a social problem in society in general.

If you had a time machine and he grew up as kid today with all the basketball camps and training techniques then he would be unstoppable. He had extraordinary peripheral vision which helps protect the ball and find the open man.

Without Bob Cousy there is no Dyansty. He was the perfect PG fit for them. Bill Russell was the perfect fit also. But if Coach Auberach got Wilt as he wanted to get Bill Russell would have been moved to PF. Thus making the best rebounding C and PF duo ever. Also best C and PF passing ever. They would have won even more.Championships also. Wilt and Bill Russell together that would make the Celtics have the best defense. The team would also have won more games. Less hard fought playoff series.
