Nikola Jokic guided Denver Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship and was named a unanimous NBA Finals MVP while being misunderstood and disrespected in the US by former players like Gilbert Arenas & Kendrick Perkins and many other celebrities and fans.
There is more than one reason why Americans don't understand Jokic and we break down all of them in this video.

No narcissism, no trash talk, honest and humble, no scandals, married his first girlfriend ever, wears his wedding ring on his shoelace, has a child, has money but never brags, donates a ton of it to different causes behind the scenes, respects his opponents and lifts up everyone around him. He is hilarious. As an Aussie I get his humour - it's really subtle and some Americans are just so absurdly in-your-face. He plays basketball like it's the Olympics. Arenas is 100% correct. Most of the media won't stop over-criticizing him, the brands won't see value on his playing ( for instance, signature shoes) as the general public don't care about the Basketball IQ, about his insane performances. For them is all about the social media, the hype, the acrobatics, posterizing the defending guy or letting him on the floor with some crafty handle. From my experience, Jokic is viewed with tremendous positivity by the average American NBA viewer. It's the sports media that is completely off base with their terrible takes and continual dismissal of him. Personally, I've had very sporadic interest in the NBA since Jordan retired. Jokic has been a breath of fresh air, especially this season where, even though he was robbed of the MVP, his championship has opened many more eyes to how exceptional he is. I would also agree that his demeanor is one of his best attributes. I, for one, am sick of these narcissistic prima donnas that the sports world is full of. Jokic seems to be more low key version of athletes like Derek Jeter or Aaron Judge. They are professionals that carry themselves the right way.

No , he is a great role model. What the guy meant , is that nobody wants to model their game like Jokic. Which is normal. But what everyone seems to forget is that he is a CENTRE! This position is not flashy in general, with a few exceptions, mostly because really big guys don't fly in the air (forget Wilt)and are not that explosive, but that's not what their job is. They need to muscle underneath the basket , get rebounds and to free the way for the attacking players( it's called shelter in my language)not sure how you say it in English, when you you block the way with your body, so the defender can't move in on your teammate. Jokic is so great, because he is the first center with the ability of a playmaker, I don't remember another one like him at least. Again, exept Wilt , who basically could do whatever he wanted, so one year he decided to try and finished with the most assists in the whole league. But Joker does it naturally, I don't argue he is probably the best player in the moment, but For me these comparisons are useless cos Joker and Morant and Curry and Lebron are completely different players with completely different jobs on the court. But I prefer watching Kyrie play , just because of his ball handling and very aesthetic skill.

I stopped watching the NBA in the early 2000s. I watch old NBA videos. I'd heard Jokic's name the past couple years because he won the MVP twice. I didn't really care but I kept seeing lots of hype but much more hate and dismissiveness. I finally watched some videos of his highlights and I was really impressed. I started watching the NBA again because of him. I live in Denver. Everybody LOVES the guy here.

As an older American, I love Jokic. He's amazing. Humble and good at what he does. He doesn't feed the machine, and he still makes a ton of money. His teammates can do all the social media stuff. I realize it's not exciting for kids to watch maybe, but older men can appreciate him.

@jstuckless
@jstuckless 11 ай бұрын
It's just simply because he's not flashy, and the culture surrounding the NBA is pretty much all about who is the flashiest. You can literally watch an entire Nuggets game only noticing Nicola every few plays, and at the end of the game somehow he has a 30-40 point triple double. And that's not hate, it's just how he plays, almost nothing he does in a single play is jaw dropping amazing, but he puts in the work on and off the ball to get things done. I love how he plays, I've always been a fan more of the team players than the individual players so he's right up my alley.

On the other hand, for some of us, him not wanting to promote himself doing the silly social media stunts like the rest is actually making me more of a fan of his. Of course, he has no appeal for new generations, young people who literally learned to swipe before they learned to walk and would rather follow some drama about the player than actually watch the ball game.

Recently retired and current players disparage Jokic because he destroys their favorite narrative: that players from earlier eras could not make it in today's NBA. Jokic's game is a throwback to an earlier time--he is, basically, a slightly taller Larry Bird--and his success playing that type of game drives the Gilbert Arenases of the world absolutely crazy.
