What’s the formula of success when it comes to EuroLeague stars transitioning to the NBA? Why did some European legends like Vassilis Spanoulis, Sarunas Jasikevicius or Milos Teodosic found themselves on the NBA bench? And why others like Manu Ginobili, Bogdan Bogdanovic or Luis Scola had lengthy & successful NBA careers after becoming EuroLeague stars first? In this video, we look at the 3 main reasons why EuroLeague stars fail in the NBA and if Sasha Vezenkov & Vasilije Micic can struggle there too.

I would like to add the fact that the NBA is individually oriented while Europe is team oriented. A player that succeeds in a team system won't necessarily succeed in an exhibitionist and individualist system

I am Italian and I saw Datome and Melli fail in NBA. I think defense is a key factor because often Europeans are less athletic and less big so they struggle in defense. Also, if you keep on playing only few minutes it's difficult to find a place in the league. Belinelli, for example, went to USA when he was very young so he had time to find his place (and it was hard).

Belinelli found his place also because he was and still is an amazing shooter, one of the best in the nba at his peak. Another factor to keep in mind (and it's really unfortunate) is the anti-European bias from NBA coaches, executives, and even analysts. Granted, it has gotten better over the years, but we saw that bias in the spotlight just last year when Perk single-handedly denied Jokic his 3rd-straight MVP. You cannot convince me that Embiid had a better season than both Giannis and Jokic when they did everything better than Embiid other than scoring. Not just that, American coaches just don't know how to play Euro players and are often ignorant of their strengths, which in turn makes the player look like a bust and then further strengthens the anti-Euro bias among the staff.

Is France in Europe? Teams are not anti anything because French players don't seem to have any issues transitioning to the NBA because the difference is style of play. French players like to play at a faster pace and they defend which is something the NBA values. It's a more aggressive style that requires quick thinking on your feet and being able to adjust in the moment.

@@sefforComplicated issue. Many NBA vets who’ve been in the league for a while are obviously favored compared to incoming euroleague playes because they are insiders. Doesn’t mean they are ”better” and therefore earned their role but because they have a reputation amongst the NBA coaches. Euroleague stars are newcomers and have to ”prove themselves” even though they’ve played high level basketball in Europe. However, as seen in the video, there’s a reason why many euroleague stars tend to struggle in the NBA: playstyle. If you can’t adapt and find your role early, you’ll get benched + the foreign environment and culture make’s it even harder to succeed if you are not mentally tough enough. Guys like Luka and Jokic succeeded even though they are not athletic because they were able to adapt. Guys like mirotic and rubio were able to do this do to an extent and then there are the guys who failed and went back. In short, if you can’t gain a good reputation amongst the nba executives in a short time period after your transfer, you’ve lost your oportunity imo. Especially if you are not a young player like Jokic and Luka were when they entered the league.
@fbiopenup6534
@fbiopenup6534 6 ай бұрын
Honestly I think the answer is a simple one, better and more talent in the NBA. Euroleague may have better quality of basketball in terms of play, but talent and skill in the NBA is on another tier. Some of the Euroleague stars who go over and look "average" are only "average" compared to the competition. When you have guards like Luka, Steph, Booker, SGA, Lillard, Mitchell, Kyrie and etc. Micic compared to them simply looks...average. Also that's not a bad thing, they can still succeed if they're decent players.
@wanderingsoul2909
@wanderingsoul2909 6 ай бұрын
So, being a "specialist" spot up shooter, strong defender and rebounder and court positioning savvy ( passing ) and intangibles are most needed when your the 3rd or 4th option. This is a BIG BIG BIG change from when your the 1st or 2nd option and are given the confidence to play your normal game. So, these Euros should learn from Denver's BB God Nikola Jokic 's skills. I do think that rigourous training on defense , change of direction, recovery, intensity will pay dividends. Of course, this requires many many hours of body training and coaching. BUT, why if your a STAR in Europe and getting paid ? The rabid fans and team rivalries make it more interesting. The NBA rap culture is not for everyone. The ball is usually moving in Europe and not being dominated by 2-3 stars. This changes the whole flow of the game. NBA style of play is different. This restricts opportunities for the role players as they just get out of the way. When your "restricted" to these roles, your energy and enthusiam suffer and thus your performance.

Trust me there is no Small Forward-Power Forward in NBA with better shoot than Sasa and you know what they are saying in basketball. If you can shoot you play. You will see. He is just an amazing player than needs time. European players failed because is USA there is only one POP to make them feel like home, trust them and guide them. ie Spanoulis was a killing machine but he had the for coach Jeff Van Gundy. Who??? Jeff Van Gundy. Where is Jeff Van Gundy now?? commentator. If he was a good coach he will still be in the benches not in TV. He just ruined Spanoulis career in NBA. More or less the difference between NBA and Euroleague are the money available. If you give to a European Team 100 milion USD they will form a team that will be able to beat any NBA Team. Euroleague teams have a budget of maximum 30-40 milions USD. It is the same with football. Is it possibly ie Inter Miami with Messi to beat any of the top teams in Europe. No. They cant even beat the middle teams in Europe because in Europe the teams spend abt 500 milion USD and Inter Miami abt 40 milion. Now that i think it probably will loose from all the teams in 5 Major Leagues in Europe. The difference in only the budget. Imagine a team with Doncic, Giannis, Jokic, Bogdanovic,Sabonis,Porzingis, etc. . I think they can match up with any US Team. Look what is happening with National teams . except Dream Team 1 all the other failed. Greek National Team eliminated US National team back on 2006. Do you know the roster of US? LeBron James , Dwyane Wade ,Chris Paul ,Chris Bosh ,Dwight Howard ,Elton Brand ,Carmelo Anthony etc. But they were eliminated. So differnce is only CASH.

Since they are used to being no1 or at least getting massive offensive role, they are not optimap for the new roles given. Makes sense. Luka is different because he was EL MVP so young. Jokić is maybe the most interesting phenomenon, because he really entered NBA as rooky, very young and yet not established player, although he already won Olympic silver medal in 2016. with Serbia national team, although he was rooky there also whit not much minutes P. S. For God sake, Toni Kukoč has 3 NBA rings with Bulls,, playing with Jordan, Divac was first non-USA citizen to enter NBA Hall of Fame, you cannot just miss such names, and he for sure had much more than 12 minutes per game as Sacramento Kings team leader... P. P. S. And there is at least 10 Spanish players you missed to mention, like Hernangomez brothers, Calderon etc. basketball.realgm.com/national/teams/9/Spain/nba_players

Based on the fact that I know and respect almost 65% of those 36 stars, I’d say that’s a pretty Damm high percentage of success! Actually 75% of those stars I consider SOLID game altering/game changing stars meaning, when they are on an NBA court, even if they aren’t the star, they impact the game more than the average role player because of how fundamentally sound they are! It’s like they all come with a default manu ginobili setting aka, even at their worst, their style of play is soo unorthodox, you have to acknowledge them ! They do things that the box score doesn’t necessarily track! Only deep analytics shows you how impactful they are if you’re not able to see it while they’re playing!

We talk about defence in the NBA? Does Harden play defence? Its not only if you play good or not, the most important is if you are part of the franchise. E.g Spanoulis played defence, but the coach ditched him giving him a minor role.The European Players usually enter NBA in older ages than the US players, cannot accept to be a bench player in their 28 years on average , their most productive ages while having proved their quality in the past.

Sasha played 12 minutes against the Warriors. He was benched most the game. He scored 10 points in 12 minutes. The Kings lost. Fox had to score all 18 of his 39 in the 4th qtr. No one to help. Size isn't the factor. Having "it" is what matters. Curry has "it". Skill matters. Sasha isn't small. Hes a sharpshooter. Play the man.

Some european stars don't succeed in the NBA because FIBA basketball and NBA are two different sports. FIBA rules make athleticism less important. For example, most guards in the NBA would be called 15 times a game for travelling or handling and they wouldn't be able to abuse their ahtleticism so much in order to avoid that. The best of them, would adjust easily and dominate Europe like good european player do in NBA but a lot of them would struggle a lot in the Euroleague.

I feel like the nba should have the best players objectively. Like it’s fine to develop guys and keep them anticipating growth (most good investments don have short return yield). But there’s some dudes in the nba that are just so bad and there’s euroleague and maybe even g leaguer who could fit team’s roles so much better.

In the pond or in the ocean there are fish with big legs and others with big brains... A good fisherman can train many of them with big legs, but The Big brain ones aren't trainable, they're precious and extremely rare, but you need a brave fisherman coach to build around them... Fisherman Malone did it ... But some fish has to throw sweat and blood, like fish AG, fish KCP, fish Braun... They have to swim faster, dragging fish Joker on defense knowing they will be paid off even if they don't know when or how, because none of them can understand what's going through that mind ...
