The Basque Country is different from the rest of Spain: holidays on the coast are wilder and rougher. The green hinterland with peaks over 1,000 meters is reminiscent of the Allgäu, and the people speak their own language. Anne Willmes travels from the fashionable seaside resort of San Sebastián through small fishing villages where the seafaring past is alive to the avant-garde metropolis of Bilbao.

The Basque country in the north of Spain is full of traditions from its history. These include pelota, the world's fastest ball game, rowing competitions on the Atlantic and men's cookery clubs. Anne Willmes tastes the delicious pinxtos, the Basque tapas, marvels at the archaic nature in the Geopark of Zumaia and makes a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James between the coast and vineyards. And she visits what is probably the most famous sight in the Basque Country: the rocky island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, in the middle of the Bay of Biscay.
The Basque Country is an autonomous region made up of three provinces in northeastern Spain, located in the Bay of Biscay. The Atlantic coast is more than 180 kilometers long and runs from the holiday resort of Hondarribia in the east on the border with France to the city of Bilbao in the west. The landscape is greener and mountainous, the coast wilder and rougher. In a very small area there are cosmopolitan cities, mountains with peaks of more than 1,500 meters, dream beaches, wine landscapes, impressive stretches of coast - and little package tourism. Perfect for an individual trip. The best travel time is from June to September with pleasant summer temperatures. The maximum average temperature in August is 26 degrees Celsius. But a rain jacket should never be missing on a holiday. Because the famous txirimiri, the typical fine rain, is the reason why the Basque Country is so lush green.
The Basques are a distinct ethnic group with a strong sense of belonging and a deep-rooted identity. They have their own language, their own culture, history and politics. "Euskara" is the oldest living language in Europe and is not related to any other language in the world. The Basques call Euskadi their homeland. For many decades there have been strong attempts at autonomy in the Basque Country, including violent ones. The responsible underground organization ETA stopped the armed struggle in 2011. It's been peaceful ever since.
