And that's not just my opinion, it's straight facts, so what you just told is your stupid opinion, because again you have no clue what are you talking about.

Definitely leaning towards the J just because I’m really fond of the way it sounds when slapping. I absolutely love its clear, bright sound with every slap, mute and pop! BUT the way that P blends better with the mix and it’s deep, round sound it’s something to seriously appreciate.

Yes that's exactly how I feel. To me personally I get more joy out of playing a jazz, and digging in getting down with the music, but I cannot deny that sometimes I'm a bit jealous that the precision bass sometimes when played with a pick especially, sounds better in a band mix 👍🏼

I get that you're probably not serious, but that doesn't actually work. The P-bass pickup occupies more or less the same point along the scale length as the Jazz Bass neck pickup. Harmonic position of the pickups along the scale length is VERY important in terms of tone. Like, a bridge position P-pickup sounds absolutely brutally hot and bright, while the mid-position sounds like we all have heard a billion times. If you put low-output Jazz-style pickups at the same points along the string length as a Rickenbacker, it makes VERY convincing Ric tones. That's more important than maybe any other single factor in solid body bass tone.

Yeah, I'm a firm believer in having one of each. The p/j combo just doesn't seem to do it for me (the p pickup doesn't sound full on, maybe because the wiring routes through the j, and the single bridge j doesn't get me there for the full on j sound). Plus you get two basses when you go with 1 of each, and one can never have too many basses. Anyways, great demo, as always.

So this is something that I've been wrestling with and learning for quite a while. I've always gravitated towards the Jazz bass, while looking down my nose at the Precision bass because that's what I saw come in every starter bass pack at the store that was the bottom of the barrel starter bass 👎🏼 lol so I had the impression that the p bass is the most basic bass for beginners. I started learning that although I prefer my jazz, there are some times where the p bass may be a better fit in the mix. I'm blown away by how many hit records have a p bass on them. 🤷🏻 What can I say, they have a lot of home runs on the p bass, it seems a more reliable bottom end to have in a lot of different styles and settings. But to me I get so inspired when I hear that bright crisp, tight single coil sound of a jazz bass or something similar with single coils, I prefer to play that. But I do acknowledge that there is a place for both. 👍🏼💯

Tough battle because both are unbeatable in their PROPER PLACE! My 1st Jazz was a 68' and my first precision was a 71' fretless. @dhouse I agree. I also think what the mix sounds like without the bass has a lot to do with it. I find a P sits on top of the kick and below the snare, guitar and keys, and also has a high mid presence that all somehow fits right into all the the open frequencies without competing with the band. If the band is already taking up the same frequencies as the bass, that's when you might need a Jazz or Stingray to cut through like a chain saw.

Sire deserve all their praise but if you grew up with the Fender tone, the Sire probably will dissapoint. Sire has a very functional tone but lacks the colour and mojo of the original. Certainly for a P that you drive hard with powerful fretbuzz, Geezer Butler style. It might be as easy changing the passive pickups or some of the routing but this is the truth.

Shortest possible answer: Team J. A little more nuance: I much prefer the look and feel of a P, but not only is the spectrum of sonic possibilities much much wider on a J, with that amazingly expressive thin bridge, and a respectable approximation of both the ubiquitous 57 P and even moreso, the original "tele" 51 P by way of the Jazz Neck, but even the hallmark "J Bass sound" itself (that is, both pickups on at once) I prefer over the P sound in greater than 50% of contexts (with, once again, a relatively decent P-Bass impersonation on deck already with the neck-only mode for when you need / want that sound). The P vs the J neck is a matter of "chunky" vs "waxy" with more low mids and mids in the P, and an overall "fuller" sound, vs a more articulate sound that, yes, is a little brighter with stronger highs and high mids, and can easily be perceived as "thinner" with the weaker low-mids. But what surprised me is that in direct comparisons, the extreme lows have actually been stronger on the J neck. Whether that "waxy" attack on the J neck is a blessing or a curse relative to the more hallmark "chunky" of the 57 split-coil P is one part subjective tastes and another part context. Yes, overall, I at least slightly prefer the more ubiquitous P over the J neck. But I see both as excellent sounds, and close enough that the one could fill in for the other convincingly well in a real pinch. And again, the neck is one of only three broadly defined sound styles the J gives you, where love it or hate it, what you get with the P is what you get, and it's a lot more one-dimensional. Lastly, where am I coming from on this, like, am I saying this as a J-Bass owner, P-Bass owner, both, neither, other? Well, I have (among others) a 2008 MIA Fender standard J-Bass, and a 1984 Electra-Westone XJ700B Futura bass, which, cosmetically, is insanity, but functionally, in terms of electronics, neck shape, size, scale, as well as in terms of tone woods, is just a P-Bass. In fact, it's been modded with a 2008 MIA standard Fender P-Bass pickup, so it's an even more direct comparison. So, both, is the short answer. My one complaint with this video is that you didn't show bridge and neck-only modes at all. It was just JJ vs P and that was it. So you only showed one third of the J-Bass, and missed a great opportunity to compare J neck vs P. Otherwise, I loved it! The sound quality, the visual presentation, the riffs and playing, as well as the background tracks, and the various play styles are all wins in my book! Only you shouldn't have bound yourself to just the one JJ mode on the J. Cheers!

Between the two, I'm a Jazz Bass kinda guy, but they (like everything) have limitations. If I could just have one electric bass, it'd probably be a Jazz with P/J pickups. Since I can have as many as I like, my passive basses (fretted and fretless) are both Japanese Jazz Bass Special (an 85 and an 88) necks with Warmoth alder/flamed maple Jazz bodies routed for P-pickups and 2 controls. They both have EMG GZR-P pickups in them, which are a pretty damn good interpretation of a good 60s P-Bass but with brand new reliability and clarity. If I want less of a P-Bass sound, I have my Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 4 H fretted and 4 HS fretless, which (to me) make Jazz Basses (and several other classic models) unnecessary, if not obsolete. On the rare occasion that I want a tone I can't get from my Jazzcisions or Sterlings, I do have a G&L L-2000 that is an absolute chameleon, those things can do anything.

I love the sound of the Jazz Bass by itself but the P Bass really does sit in the mix so much better. I wonder how a Stingray would compare.

I have bought a Jazz Bass a few years ago. It's just more versatile than the Preci. If you want P-sounds, use the neck pickup...

I feel like they got the names backwards: the precision seems warmer and jazzier and the jazz sounds more articulated and bright. Anyways I prefer the p bass because that’s what I own haha love that off white jazz I’m tho 😍

The Precision is named as such because it has frets, which made it way easier to play in tune than with an upright bass. The Jazz Bass is named as it is because... some reason. It was probably aimed to be for jazz players but has also been adopted by at least someone in every genre.
@matteocristini62213 жыл бұрын
@@blue-tb2fd the jazz bass was first introduced as the "deluxe bass" because of the wider range of tones provided by the two pickup configuration, but it was then renamed "jazz bass" to be aimed at jazz players who still preferred the thinner neck of an acoustic double bass. Precision bass necks start wide at the nut and remain fairly constant while jazz bass necks start thin and then get wider towards the body. The name is also a nod to the jazzmaster guitar, which was the inspiration for the body shape. Despite all the effort, most jazz players still favoured acoustic double basses, but the name was kept.

The Jazz Bass sounds so iconic and has so much personality... That snarl and growl is my favorite bass sound. The Precision Bass is kinda lifeless and has no character, but that's exactly what you want a lot of the time. Jazz for those complex, feature bass lines that matter in the song and are meant to be heard, and the P Bass for taking up bass frequencies and delivering that low-end punch you need to really make a track bloom.

Exactly what I was thinking. The Jazz bass sounds really distinct and instantly recognizable. The P bass just sounds dull to me

I've Always thought it was kind of opposite but that's when being a heavy handed player. A Hard driven P sounds so incredibly iconic to me. I used to think the jazz was just quite versatile and a bit, just, funtional and slighty too unballsy most of the time, but now I think the Jazz sounds very sweet in a way. I've grown to love it, but I'm very much more a P-bass fanboy. All hail Geezer Butler.
