Bass Drum Drop Coordination for Reggae, Fusion and Samba Styles

Here is a lesson on bass drum drop beats. These are called this because of the way the bass drum hits on the 2nd and 4th note of a 4/4 bar.
These grooves are common in Reggae and Samba as well as some fusion styles. I show you how to develop coordination using a few different ostinatos as well as some rhythms from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion.
The equipment used in the video is as follows:
Bass Drum - Peavey Radial 1000 22" x 16 "
Snare Drum - Ludwig 1967 5" x 14" Acrolite
Cymbals
Sabian 13" HH Hi Hat Cymbals
Sabian 22" Ralph Peterson Ride Cymbal
The microphones are two Sennheiser MKH 800 Overheads and an AKG D112 on the Bass Drum

I Love these old Peavey drums! I wouldn't want to shlep them. But they look and sound nice. Also this was a helpful lesson on the importance of beat 2 and 4. I've found this also helps with time and feel when playing passages of four on the floor in jazz time and trading. I use this all the time!

Nice Rick, here is a linear idea I thought I could share here applying the 2 and 4 on bass drum: I also found that playing a single paradiddle sticking (accenting the first 16th note of each 4 note grouping) as 16ths with 2 and 4 on bass drum, but avoid playing on the bass drum notes, the challenge her is that you do not play on the bass drum notes, linear concept ( the single paradiddle is intervened over or between the 2 and 4, becomes a 4 bar phrase, very challenging. I applied this also to triplet feel, also with biao or the Charlston rhythm on bass drum, can apply this same concept to other stickings as well, ex. with double strokes (as 16ths) with 2 and 4 on bass drum, becomes a 2 bar phrase. Also 3 note sticking ex RLL etc. many interesting rhythms and possibilities opens up with this concept :-)
