Absolutely killer version of this song -- I recommend listening with a battle axe in hand. What was your favorite part about this epic cover from VoicePlay?
@CapriUni
@CapriUni Жыл бұрын
I think my favorite parts (hard to pick a favorite, when the whole is so great), are 1) at the beginning, when they're all singing together, and everyone cuts out a J. sings the solo "Me," and 2) When J. enters the hall to join in the group singing. The action of the video is matching the music of the video. And also, it's reflective of J.'s current relationship to the band -- being in a different place, and coming in to join them when he can. Good storytelling.

So many “oh damn” moments in this one from everyone. Geoff’s first B0 of course, Eli’s high belt rock verse, Cesar’s unusual dark grittiness, J’s rap verse and Layne’s drum fills and sound effect were stellar on this one. Makes for an all time favourite. Great reaction and analysis Peter. Always nice to get a bit of an inside look at how things are done. Keep up the good work.

I lol’d when you had to jump up for the Vipers. I was thinking “and you can just leave them on” and as soon as I thought that, text popped up that you had no idea what was coming, which also made me laugh. I think you overlooked Cesar a tad - he was challenging Eli for grit. We don’t usually hear him doing that. Also: one thing you were wrong on - there was no green screen. No. Really. No green screen. Watch their BTS on this. There’s some place they went to that has LED screen walls. Like, the whole room - all the walls are LED screen. Not a wall made of a bunch of LED screens; each wall is One Really Big Screen. Eli made the graphics, and they were played on these mega maxi sized screens while they were in front of it. The “tavern” or whatever that interior is was the same thing. Watch the BTS to see those walls; they’re seriously awesome. (And there’s an idea for your own future shoots) Love your reaction as always - you always teach me something. ❤

The big surprise to me in this one was Cesar going so insane. Lots of grit in his voice at points, just some color we hadn’t seen before-not to mention he’s quite an actor. Kinda scary. I also think there’s a fair possibility some of those 5th octave notes came out of him. Everybody was insanely good in this. Wouldn’t want to meet any of them on the battlefield. Since you caught this early you might not have seen that Gavin Dunne (@miracleofsound-the composer) dropped a comment giving this 10 out of 10 alehorns. That’s super cool since this was way different from what he envisioned (you really should hear his version with “that guy” Peyton Parrish-there’s also a trio version where they bring in Eric Hollaway). Anyway, I don’t think I ever looked forward to one of your reactions as much as I did with this one. Thanks for living up to the anticipation!!

Geoff actually had 3 B0s in this one. So says one of VPs patreons. It feels quite epic. One of the people I converse with said Geoff's voice is like a purring panther curled up inside a cello! I thought you would enjoy that. I feel for you with the nasal drip. I came down with covid and for 3 days I ran a fever, had a very sore throat and post-nasal drip. After that I had phlegm in my throat in the morning and constant nose blowing. It was nearly 4 weeks before I tested negative. I'm still fighting it a little bit but that is so annoying and you - You sing for your supper! Be well my friend.

Eli's rasp when he's that high felt unearthly, so cool. Layne's builds and fills were sensational, and he showed his inner viking with a bit of grit in his singing section. Geoff's brain-melting b0s just feel like they go on forever... And then keep rattling around my skull when he's stopped singing. J's rap was truly out of nowhere, it seems like they're bringing back a few old tricks recently as a like 'oh yeah, in case you forgot' what with the return of vioLayne from Warriors to Nothing Else Matters and now rap J from Superstitious to this. I've been hoping we'd get another chance to hear him rap but he blew my expectations out of the water. Cesar... I will never underestimate you again. I saw the viking theme and was a bit disappointed as I guessed that he'd have a bit of a back seat in this one, I'm so glad I was wrong, those sections of grit were so unexpected and very cool. They all looked stunning, sounded stunning... This was awesome.

Along with so many others, I really appreciate what you bring, Peter. I've always loved music and it's always made me sad that I never felt I had any real understanding. After failing miserably throughout school to grasp what seemed the basics (can't read music - can't interpret the little dots on lines, can't play anything or identify a note... you get the picture) I felt that I was obviously musically illiterate and not part of that world that could really appreciate it in any depth. I'm a huge acapella fan and had just heard Voiceplay for the first time (My Mother Told Me) and then discovered your channel and found that your breakdown made a lightbulb go off in my head. I don't know how you do it - but in a warm. welcoming way you hit the balance between being thorough but understandable. Loving the accessible without being patronising way you talk us through each video. I've actually found that the more I watch, the more I'm understanding and I feel great when I can listen to something I come across and identify a technique you've talked about in another video, or even the odd note! I always look forward to your videos. Thank you, from a middle-aged Brit who is finally not feeling stupid in her music appreciation!

Have been anticipating your reaction to this, and wasn't disappointed! I think the surprise for me (well, besides J. None's rap - no one expects that!) was how gritty and raw Cesar sounded. We're so used to hearing him softer, kind of breathy, but he really gave Eli a run for his money with how much rougher he sounded. Of course, now we'll be expecting that from him in the future, and it'll probably be a while before we get it again.

@@red5250 Like how the hell does someone get good at that technique? It seems like he starts with chest and then switches to subharmonic. Totally crazy!

@@hugobasilio1303 Switching from like your consistent low chest straight into a sub just a semitone down cleanly is suuuper impressive, especially keeping it thick and dark like it was. Keep in mind though he's been doing subs for like 5 years I think - he's a really experienced singer and owns incredible musical talent. Practice does indeed make perfect, after all.

@@red5250 Agreed, and I think Geoff first discovered Subharmonics in 2017, but he did show it firstly in Twenty one pilots mashup, in which was released in November 2016, so it's been more than 6 years of experienced extended technique.

I happened to come across Geoff a few weeks ago. I left a couple of messages trying to get you to check him out. Didn't here anything back from you, but here we are. I watched him do several solos as well. The Sound of Silence where he sung all parts and mixed them, and other songs he did the same thing with. Truly amazing dude.

I love the respect you give to Geoff not just in this video but all of their videos. Your talent is absolutely amazing and I so appreciate your videos and the Bass Gang as well. Keep sharing the gifts that you have with all of us because they are so appreciated. Love your posts to Kaz Brock's reactions to your Bass Gang videos. It's nice to see your appreciation of those reactions. Keep it up kind sir.

They absolutely killed it with this one, like when I first saw this on their Patreon I was speechless...just everything about this is perfect. That B0 was so clean, I honestly question every day if Geoff is actually human because of his insane voice🤣But he did such a great job in this one. And everyone else was amazing too, all of them shined in this one. I am so glad that this exists, I have been listening to it basically every day since it came out. Thank you so much for the great reaction/analysis as always friend!❤

Quite late commenting on this, but you're one of the few reactors I've subscribed to, because I get reactions AND a truly sound analysis..... It's gotten me back into some of the music theory, and I love that Also, your voice is magic to listen to, so that helps, lol, could listen to you and Geoff speak and sing all day!😅
